by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, December 28, 2011: Issue #1674 Last week, I reviewed my brilliant (and a few, let’s call them sub-brilliant) market calls for 2011. As the year winds down, here are my thoughts for what lies ahead in 2012 for income investors. Prediction #1: The “Crowded Trade” Chatter Heats Up Many Wall Street pros are scoffing at buying stocks with solid dividends. I believe this is for two reasons: The first is that in order for the Wall Street machine to make money, and that includes the financial media, you need to be trading constantly, generating commissions and hanging onto every word as to which stocks will go higher and which are going to tank. If you’re investing in dividend paying stocks, chances are

On conciliatory terms, Duke Energy will slash its proposed 15% base rate increase for South Carolina to 6%. Added to it Duke Energy will also contribute $4 million to a limited liability company, AdvanceSC, to improve its South Carolina service area in terms of economic development, low income assistance, education initiatives, and existing manufacturing support.
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) recently announced a new $6 billion, five-year credit agreement. Duke Energy will have immediate access to $4 billion under the credit agreement while $2 billion becomes available following the successful closing of Duke Energy’s proposed merger with Progress Energy Inc. (PGN). The merger is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2011. The credit agreement replaces the company’s existing credit facility of $3.14 billion and Progress Energy’s credit facility of approximately $2 billion. We believe the new credit facility will increase the company’s available fund and extend the maturity period of debt. At the end of third-quarter 2011, the company held current assets worth $6.27 billion and long-term debt running into $17.58 billion. Recently, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (“PUCO”) cleared the acquisition deal. DPL will now become a wholly owned subsidiary of AES Corporation. The company had entered into an agreement to acquire DPL in April this year. Per the agreement, AES offered to pay $30 per share in cash to DPL shareholders.
Historically, the growth outlook of alternative energy companies has been inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. In the near term, however, the fortunes of the alternative energy players are undergoing a radical transformation. On one hand, the continuing European debt crisis has led to the U.S. Federal Reserve reducing its growth forecast, raised projections for unemployment and leaning on buying more mortgage debt to tide over a troubled economy. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued it in 2010. In the first nine months of 2011, the economy was affected by unseasonal and harsh weather, heightened uncertainty spawned by the crisis in the Eurozone, a drop in federal defense purchases, and

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, August 30, 2011: Issue #1589 It’s no secret that coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel on the planet. That being said, it’s an essential part of our existence. The world burns more than seven billion tons per year, mostly for electrical power generation. The United States consumes about 14 percent of the world’s total coal production. More than 90 percent of our coal consumption generates 46 percent of our electricity. There are about 600 coal-fired generating stations in the United States. Most of our aging fleet of plants were constructed between 1950 and 1980.
The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. The recent thaw in oil prices is casting a shadow over this emerging momentum. But even despite the pullback in oil prices, they still remain above historical levels. Nevertheless, we believe that a temporary oil price thaw will do limited, if any, damage to the emerging positive alternative energy narrative. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the projected U.S. refiner crude oil average acquisition cost will rise from $102 per barrel in 2011 to $108 per barrel in 2012. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued the economy in 2010. In the first half of 2011, the

This new project is another addition to Duke Energy’s renewable power generation portfolio. The company has invested around $1.5 billion in its renewable generation assets since 2007. Duke Energy has purchased this wind power project from CPV Renewable Energy Company, based out of Silver Spring, Maryland. The first phase of the wind project, Cimarron I, will however continue to be owned by CPV Renewable Energy Company. Duke Energy Renewables will begin constructing the Cimarron II Windpower Project from fall 2011 and would open the unit for commercial use from June 2012.
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) said that its unit Duke Energy Carolinas has filed for a rate increase, as planned, with the North Carolina Utilities Commission to recover the investments made by the company over the last two years. If approved, the new rates will come into effect from February 2012. The previous rate hike for the company was approved in 2009, which resulted in an increase of $7.30 per month in the residential bill for consumers who typically use 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power per month. If the new rate is approved by the commission it will result in a steep $19 hike per month for residential consumers utilizing 1,000 kWh of power month. In the process the company will stand to benefit $646 million from the rate hike. The

(CBB) is entering into a new business arena that allows it to offer energy services to its residential customers through its new subsidiary Cincinnati Bell Energy. Cincinnati Bell inked a partnership deal with Connecticut-based renewable energy supplier, Viridian Energy, to provide electric services at discounted energy rates unlike local utilities’ companies. The energy rate will be 30% less than Duke Energy Corporation’s (DUK) regulated price of 8.24 cents per kw hour and offered initially in the southwest territory. The retail energy market is growing day-by-day. After entering the managed hosting and cloud services business, the telecom industry is now moving to the green energy solution business. The company expects the higher rates will go into effect from January 1, 2012. Duke Energy’s recent plan for rate case hike is second in a series of three increases. The hikes are tied largely to recovering investments for the construction of the 825-megawatt expansion at the Cliffside Steam station and the 620-megawatt Buck combined-cycle natural gas plant. Duke Energy got the first rate hike of 4.3% for residential customers implemented January 1, 2010. Duke will seek a third increase, likely to be filed in 2013. The company has a diversified fleet of power generating units, strong balance sheet compared to its peers and the synergies from the Exelon Corporation (EXC) merger, which are among the other positives. However, adverse decisions in pending regulatory cases, lowered electricity demand and erratic weather conditions somewhat weigh on the positives. We thus retain our Neutral recommendation on the company. Constellation Energy’s merger with Exelon Corporation is expected to be a strategic fit and earnings accretive to the combined entity in the second year itself. The merger deal would provide a huge boost in terms of lowering collateral costs for its competitive businesses. The company will also acquire StarTex Power,

Income-oriented investors have yet another reason to be upset with the bond markets. Junk bond yields fell to a record low a few days ago and are staying near those levels. As of Wednesday evening, the Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield index yielded a mere 6.68%, which isn’t much when you consider the risk of default. These low yields are just one sign of the bond market’s cheery mood. Corporations are finding plenty of buyers for their debt, and many offerings have been completed this week. Among the investment-grade companies selling bonds are Google (GOOG), Norfolk Southern (NSC) and Walt Disney (DIS). Included in this week’s near-record level of junk bond offerings is beleaguered Chrysler, which is refinancing its loan package. Taking advantage of the low interest rates is good

Duke Energy Indiana, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (DUK), filed a testimony with the Indiana state utility regulators and has proposed to limit the construction costs of its Edwardsport power plant. Under the proposal, Duke Energy has proposed a cap of $2.88 billion including financing on construction costs to be passed to customers. It has also asked the regulators to lower the overall customer rate increase related to the project from approximately 19% to 16%. On an average, this would affect the residential homeowner by about 14%. Additionally, Duke Energy wants Indiana customers to experience the benefits of bonus depreciation. The company spent more than $2 billion constructing new plants and solar farms in the Carolinas in 2010.
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) has reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Justice on a lawsuit pertaining to a clean air violation at Duke Energy’s coal-fired power Gallagher plant in southern Indiana. Duke Energy will spend about $93 million to settle clean air violations at the plant. Also, as part of the settlement, the company will continue to operate the 560 megawatts (MW) Gallagher facility. Duke Energy plans to convert the facility to gas-fired from coal-fired. Duke Energy estimates the cost to convert the units to gas from coal and install additional pollution controls at $80 million. In addition to resolving litigation, the steps will help the company comply with future federal rules that are anticipated to further limit power plant emissions. Duke Energy

Duke Energy Corporation’s (DUK) utility subsidiary Duke Energy Kentucky reached a settlement agreement with the Kentucky Attorney General in its natural gas rate case. Under the settlement agreement, Duke Energy has asked the Kentucky Public Service Commission to approve the negotiated rate increase for natural gas delivery service of approximately $13 million, or 10.4% on total gas revenues, to be effective early 2010. The original request was for $17.5 million, or a 14% increase. For an average residential customer using 70 ccf (ccf is 100 cubic feet) of natural gas per month, a typical monthly bill of $82.21 will increase by $11.52 to $93.73. Since its last natural gas delivery rate case implemented in 2006, Duke Energy Kentucky has invested more than $60 million to continue the accelerated gas main

Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) recently signed a contract with the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to place up to three demonstration wind turbines in Pamlico Sound (North Carolina). Duke will pay for the turbines and their installation. The turbines will harness the power of ocean breezes along North Carolina’s coast. Duke Energy’s pilot project is based on a nine-month study completed in June 2009 by the UNC for the North Carolina General Assembly. The pilot turbine installation will facilitate utility-scale wind energy development by enabling studies to optimize measuring and predicting the wind resource, quantifying ecological impacts and demonstrating turbine performance in tropical storm conditions.
Duke Energy (DUK) recently announced plans to set up its second-largest renewable energy facility near Casper, Wyoming. The 200 megawatt {MW} “Top of the World” project, the company’s fourth wind farm in Wyoming and ninth in the U.S., will generate enough electricity to power approximately 50-60 thousand households annually. The construction is expected to begin in late 2009 or early 2010, after receiving requisite approvals, and to commence commercial production by end of 2010. Duke signed a 20-year contract with PacifiCorp, which operates as Rocky Mountain Power in Wyoming, for selling the entire output and associated renewable energy credits of the plant. Duke continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio. It has announced four new wind power projects year to date, with a capacity totaling above 360 MW. Presently, Duke

Duke Energy Corp. (DUK) recently signed an agreement with Sun Edison and will buy electricity generated at the privately held company’s solar farm at Davidson County in North Carolina. The 16.1MW facility is touted as the largest photovoltaic solar farm in the U.S. The solar farm will serve dual purposes for Duke. It will add 16.1MW of annual capacity to its kitty. Secondly, it will go green. According to the company’s estimates, the same amount of electricity produced from fossil fuels would have emitted 32.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Duke Energy would then be required to offset it by spending more on carbon credits following the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The act stipulates stringent caps against carbon dioxide emissions. Duke Energy expects the facility to be
