We are downgrading our recommendation on Dril-Quip, Inc. (DRQ) to Underperform from Neutral. The company remains exposed to the highly volatile oil and gas sector fundamentals. We remain concerned about company-specific risks, which include new product growth challenges and potential backlog losses. Additionally, delays in deepwater infrastructure awards may also hinder the growth prospect of Dril-Quip. The company has also exhibited restricted growth in the past few quarters and we remain cautious going forward. However, increased deepwater activity over the near term, recent capacity additions in Brazil and Singapore, as well as ongoing capacity expansions could prove beneficial over time.
A wholly-owned subsidiary of Dril-Quip, Inc. (DRQ) has earned a contract worth approximately $39 million from Murphy Sabah Oil Company, Ltd. Under the term of the contract, Dril-Quip’s subsidiary, Dril-Quip Asia Pacific PTE Ltd. will deliver drilling and production equipment to the Kikeh Dry Tree Spar Platform, located offshore Malaysia in approximately 1,330 meters of water. Dril-Quip will supply a drilling riser, top tensioned production risers, tensioners, tieback connectors, specialty joints, surface wellheads and production trees to the Malaysian platform. The delivery of these systems is scheduled to begin in 2012. Kikeh field, discovered in July 2002, was the first deepwater oil field to achieve production offshore Malaysia.
Dril-Quip Inc.’s (DRQ) adjusted first-quarter 2011 earnings of 58 cents per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. However, quarterly earnings dropped 18% from the year-ago adjusted profit level of 71 cents a share. The year-over-year disappointment is primarily a repercussion of the the Deepwater Horizon incident as well as project delays. Higher selling, general and administrative (SG&A), engineering and product development expenses as well as depreciation and amortization were also responsible for the downfall. Total revenue in the quarter dropped 3.4% to $137.7 million from the year-ago level of $142.5 million, but surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $132 million. Operating income fell more than 11% to $30.6 million in the quarter from the year-earlier level of $34.6 million. The company also faced a considerable increase in

Our Neutral view for the Dril-Quip Inc. (DRQ) shares remain unchanged following the company’s better-than-expected first quarter results. Earnings came in at 74 cents per share, beating both the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 68 cents and the year-earlier profit of 63 cents. Revenues were $142.5 million, up nearly 12% from the year-earlier level on the back of a favorable contribution from the subsea equipment business. Product revenues accounted for 85% of the total revenue, while the rest was contributed by Service revenues. Dril-Quip enjoys a strong market share in many of its established product lines and continues to see success from its new technologies. The company is also in excellent financial health, with an almost debt-free balance sheet and a significant amount of cash on hand. This gives it the financial flexibility

Can you hear that scurrying sound? It’s the sound of expensive shoes scampering across the floor of BP’s (NYSE: BP) legal department, as hoards of lawyers try to minimize the financial damage to the firm from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Lawsuits against BP and the other companies responsible are arriving by the dozen. And environmentalists are predicting carnage for marine life in the Gulf. Many onlookers, blitzed with TV images of wildlife choking and dying in thick sludge and Southerners fearful of losing their livelihoods, would probably subscribe to the “take ‘big oil’ to the cleaners” viewpoint. And as shares of the companies involved get hammered on the market, few have much sympathy for them. Let’s take a look at the facts as we know them… the ramifications

Dril-Quip Inc. (DRQ) reported fourth-quarter earnings of 72 cents per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 70 cents and year-earlier profit of 64 cents. The favorable statistics were mainly driven by contribution from service and subsea equipment revenues. Revenue was $141.3 million, up 4.3% from the year-earlier level. Operating income for the quarter increased 9.6% from the year-earlier level to $36.6 million. Operating margin increased approximately 130 basis points to 25.9%. We have not witnessed any movements in estimate revisions for the full fiscal 2010 in either the last 7 days or the last 30 days. The company’s earnings surprise for the preceding four quarters varies between 1.6% and 7.5%, with the average being 3.7%.
We continue to believe that Dril-Quip Inc. (DRQ) remains in a sound position on the back of the company’s strong leverage to continued strength in the deepwater drilling markets. Given the operators’ long-term view of these projects, deepwater drilling and other related services remain relatively stable through the usual fluctuations in commodity prices. The company’s core products are key to its near-to-medium term growth amidst the challenging operating environment. We particularly like the company for its solid backlog and strong financial health, given an almost debt-free balance sheet. The company is also seeing success from its new technologies such as liner hangers, subsea control systems and subsea manifolds. We see new products as the biggest potential to improve earnings in the future. Dril-Quip enjoys a strong market share, with many

The favorable statistics were mainly driven by lower costs and increased product revenues. Before adjusting one-time items, earnings were 63 cents per share. Revenues were $138.2 million, up 4.5% from the year-earlier level.
