Satellite pay-TV service provider DISN Network Corp. (DISH) recently received a shot on its arm as Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services (S&P) raised its outlook on the company from Stable to Positive. The reason for this upgrade was the proposed wireless network strategy of DISH Network. At present, S&P rates DISH Network at BB-, which is still three notches below the investment grade territory of the rating agency. Earlier this year, DISH Network acquired 40 MHz S-band wireless spectrum through acquisitions of TerreStar Networks Inc. and DBSD North America Inc. Additionally, the company itself owns a slot of in-high-demand 700 MHz wireless frequency. DISH network has decided to deploy a nationwide ground based 4G LTE wireless network using the satellite airwaves. According, management applied to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Recently, DISH Network Corp. (DISH) received a favorable ruling from department of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to use its existing satellite spectrum of 40MHz for setting up terrestrial wireless network. Such a move initiated by the FCC will benefit DISH Network to deploy mobile broadband network, which in turn, will support smartphone and tablet usage, hence avoiding other inconvenient devices. Moreover, the company will able to offer triple play services (voice, video and internet), which they lacked in their product portfolio. The acquisition of DBSD North America Inc. and TerreStar Networks Inc. for $2.9 billion has given DISH Network 40 MHz of satellite spectrum. Such massive satellite spectrum portfolio has encouraged them to appeal to the FCC for a waiver in order to set up terrestrial wireless network in the

The present wireless market is ready for the incipient boom in the wireless data space with expanding broadband services. Data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds and has more than doubled over the last three years. As a result, U.S. carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising mobile data traffic. The situation becomes even worse with the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones. Stiff competitive pressure and limited wireless spectrum licenses add to the difficulties. The carriers are in need of additional airwaves to expand their high-speed services and support 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services. As a result, the wireless industry in 2012 is intent on tapping unused spectrum to expand their capacity. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), which

The telecommunications industry is growing consistently despite a volatile U.S. economy. This industry is identified as a major driver of economic recovery. Telecommunications is one of the few industries to have seen rapid technological improvement even during the last recession. Given the significance of the telecommunications industry as an infrastructure product, we expect the overall economic dynamics to shift in its favor. We also expect the telecommunications industry to grow faster in 2012 compared with 2011. Invention and Innovation The major thrust for the telecommunications sector is coming from nonstop network inventions by carriers. The introduction of super-fast networks such as HSPA+ and LTE has enabled handset developers and chipset manufacturers to develop innovative products that are compatible with the latest network technologies. Products like Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone, iPADS,

DIRECTV (DTV), the largest satellite TV operator of the U.S., reported excellent third quarter 2011 financial results, where both earnings per share (EPS) and total revenue beat the Zacks Consensus Estimates. The solid result was attributable to double-digit revenue growth, significant margin expansion and record net customer additions. Management’s aggressive promotional plan of offering popular NFL SUNDAY TICKET coupled with upgrading customers with premium plans worked wonders for the company. Third Quarter Highlights Total revenue in the reported quarter came in at $6,844 million, up 13.6% year over year, and ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6,737 million. This was primarily attributable to massive subscriber growth in the U.S. and Latin American regions, solid average monthly revenue per subscriber growth and increasing contribution from the domestic market. Earlier in March, AT&T was keen to bring T-Mobile under its fold in a deal that would to be the largest in the wireless industry since 2004. AT&T affirmed that the sale of assets would minimize the merger concerns like unfair competition, higher prices, job losses, lower innovation and investments in the industry. The move would help the company to gain necessary approvals from the government.
DIRECTV (DTV) declared excellent financial results for the second quarter of 2011. These solid results were the combined effect of a double-digit growth of the top line and solid margin and ARPU expansion. The company is reaping the benefits of affluent quality subscribers, who are willing to pay for DIRECTV’s premium services and programs, which are pricier. DIRECTV remains one of the few pay-TV service providers that are still generating video subscriber growth. However, net subscriber growth rate suffered a major setback in the U.S. in the recent times. This was primarily attributable to ongoing U.S. economic volatility and increasing competitive threat from telecom giants, who entered into the pay-TV services supported by their strong fiber-based network. Meanwhile, the Latin American operation continues to flourish and will remain strong in

The company is a diversified telecom service provider offering wireless services through its subsidiary U.S. Cellular Corp. (USM) and wireline services through TDS Telecom. Telephone and Data Systems is pursuing several initiatives to reinvigorate growth including expansion of its 3G network, handset offerings and potential adoption of 4G Long-Term Evolution technology in the wireless business. The company is also aggressively deploying Triple-Play bundled wireline services through Dish Network Corp.’s (DISH) TV services. Though revenue beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate, driven by additional contribution from newly acquired Blockbuster Inc., EPS fell below it. As on June 30, 2011, DISH Network had approximately 14.056 million subscribers. DISH Network blamed lack of gross subscriber addition (down 23.4% year over year) was the primary reason for this huge net subscriber loss. (TIVO) is on the take over radar of multiple companies such as Google Inc. (GOOG), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Rovi Corp. (ROVI), as reported by Bloomberg. (TWC), the second-largest cable operator in the U.S. after Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), is planning to acquire cable operation from NewWave Communications. The transaction is expected to cost Time Warner $260 million and will be closed by the end of 2011, subject to regulatory approvals. The acquisition will help the company in two ways. First, it will allow Time Warner to expand its footprint to non-urban areas where NewWave mainly operates. Second, Time Warner will cumulate 70,000 basic cable customers, 42,000 Internet users and 26,000 telecom subscribers of NewWave Communications. The urban areas are becoming highly competitive as big telecom giants like Verizon Wireless Communication (VZ) and AT&T, Inc (T) are offering cable services through Fiber to the Node (FTTN) or Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) communications

We reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on DIRECTV (DTV). The company declared excellent financial results for the first quarter of 2011. These solid results were the combined effect of a double-digit growth of the top line, significant margin and ARPU expansion, and better-than-expected net customer addition. Management’s strategy to target high-end customers paid-off nicely as the demand for the company’s HD channels and digital-video recording services sky rocketed in the reported quarter. DIRECTV remains one of the few pay-TV service providers that are still generating commendable video subscriber growth. DIRECTV is reaping the benefit of affluent quality subscribers, who are willing to pay for the company’s costly premium services and programs with low churn rate.In the first quarter of 2011, DIRECTV added 184,000 net subscribers in the U.S. and 427,000

(TIVO), a developer of advanced television services including digital video recorders (DVR), will have to face a reopened patent infringement lawsuit originally filed by Echostar Corp.
A leading provider of advanced television services, TiVo Inc. (TIVO) reported disappointing third quarter fiscal 2011 results. A loss per share of 18 cents was worse than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 17 cents. Net loss for the quarter came in at $20.6 million as compared with a net loss of $6.4 million in the year-ago quarter. This was in line with the high end of management’s guidance of a loss of $19.0 million to $21.0 million. The year-over-year decline was mainly due to weak revenue growth, lower subscriber additions and increasing operating expenses based on higher litigation expense. Revenue Net revenues decreased 12.2% year over year to $50.9 million. The decline was primarily due to lower revenues from service and technology. Service revenues dropped 9.1% year

Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Google TV has now been around long enough for the geeks to play around with it. And they have come back with disappointing reviews. While most were excited at the concept of wedlock between the TV and Internet, the marriage itself looks destined to be challenging. An article on allthingsd.com was particularly enlightening, highlighting all the basic problems in the version 1.0 product, from the cumbersome keyboard/controller to the complex navigation. The system tried out was a Logitech set top box (“STB”) and remote control on a Sony Corp (SNE) TV. Google has kept search as the main feature, enabling users to select a show from not just TV but the whole Internet. Even recorded shows could be searched, provided you were using a Dish Network Corporation

Competition some time results in strange business agreements. The two fierce rivals of the U.S. commercial satellite TV market, DIRECTV (DTV) and DISH Network Corp. (DISH) are on the verge of entering a joint deal with a media buyer through which interactive advertisements will flow to both DIRECTV and DISH subscribers. In April 2010, these two companies formed a joint venture called ‘Advanced Satellite Advertising Platform’ to offer a combined interactive advertisement platform to media buyers. We believe the primary reason for this business cooperation is the massive competitive pressure that the satellite TV companies are facing from cable MSOs, fiber-based networks of telecom operators, and the newly developed Internet video streaming service providers. By agreeing to shake hands, both DIRECTV and DISH will get necessary economies of scale, a

by Alexander Moschina, Investment U Research Thursday, November 4, 2010 As if it doesn’t already make enough headlines, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is about to make even more… One day, it’s investing $5 billion in offshore wind projects. The next day, it’s providing a free nationwide phone service. Six years ago, the California tech company’s shares debuted on the stock market at $85. But as of November 3, 2010, shares traded for $618 – a massive 627% surge. And its $197 billion market cap is larger than Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO), AOL (NYSE: AOL), and the Chinese IP giant Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) combined. The Internet search provider has even held its own against the big boys of the hardware world – Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). For example… Search Engines:

Last year, Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), the largest cable MSO of the world, entered into an agreement to buy a 51% stake in NBC Universal from General Electric Co (GE), subject to government approval. Now, the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are considering arbitration in programming disputes as a condition of approving Comcast’s acquisition of NBC Universal. The cable and satellite companies such as DirecTV (DTV) and Dish Network (DISH) were worried that they will lose leverage when negotiating for programming. But this acceptance in arbitration will allow these companies to negotiate with Comcast for programs. The Comcast-NBC deal is expected to give Comcast full control of NBC’s television network, broadcast stations, cable channels and a share of the online video provider Hulu, as well as a movie

Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) has announced its intention to acquire venture capital-funded ExtendMedia, which is a maker of content management system (CMS) software. The deal, which according to some could be worth as much as $80 million, is expected to provide Cisco the necessary technology for delivering video over IP. ExtendMedia’s OpenCase suite (for managing, publishing and monetizing video across platforms) had a few big customers, such as AT&T Corp (T) and Bell Canada – a subsidiary of BCE Inc (BCE). However, further growth was limited by the non-availability of funds. Consequently, the buyout, which is currently expected to close in the first half of 2011 (subject to regulatory approval), comes at an opportune moment. Video over IP is an extremely hot area, expected to grow very strongly over the
