The struggling mobile phone manufacturer Motorola Inc. (MOT) is all set to launch its latest touchscreen smartphone the ‘Motorola CHARM’ with MOTOBLUR enhancements. This device will likely hit the market by the third quarter of 2010, exclusively with T-Mobile USA, the U.S. division of Deutsche Telekom (DT). Motorola Charm is based on Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android 2.1 operating system, offering social networking facilities with a compact design. It also provides in-call noise cancellation, a facility found usually in high-end Smartphones such as, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google’s Nexus One. It is compatible with Adobe Flash and has a trackpad just like the one available in AT&T Inc.’s (T) Backflip. Motorola Charm is all geared up to compete with HTC Inc.’s Aria launched in June. During the first quarter of 2010,

The new price plans, which replace AT&T’s current $30 monthly unlimited wireless data plan, however, do not affect the carrier’s existing subscribers who can continue with the benefits of unlimited usage. AT&T’s announcement comes ahead of the introduction (likely June 7) of the next-generation iPhone by Apple (AAPL).
Germany’s recently concluded 4G mobile broadband spectrum (radio airwave) auction has fetched lower-than-expected revenues for the government. The multi-round auction which was initially expected to generate between €6 billion and €8 billion (US$7.5 billion and US$9.9 billion) eventually raked in €4.38 billion (US$5.5 billion). The results appear lackluster compared with the staggering €51 billion (US$63 billion) in revenues generated from the sale of 3G spectrum licenses ten year ago. The auction, which was the first of its kind in Europe, officially kicked off in Mainz, Germany, on April 12, 2010. The minimum bid price was set at €1.5 million (US$1.9 million) per 5 megahertz (MHz) frequency block compared to €25.57 million (US$32 million) set in the 3G auction.
Bad news for US iPhone users, as AT&T (T) has reportedly raised Early Termination Fees (ETFs) for premium smartphones effective June 1, 2010. Ma Bell has bumped up the ETFs on such devices from the existing $175 to a whopping $325, making it much more costly for customers who break service contracts early. However, the carrier has pruned the ETFs for regular handsets from $175 to $150. Additionally, the ETFs owed will be reduced by $10 and $4 for smartphones and regular phones, respectively, for every month of service completion prior to cancellation. So if a smartphone customer leaves after six months under a two-year contract, ETF will be cut by $60 and he/she will be charged $265. The revised rates will only be applicable to new customers and those

AT&T (T) has announced a major advancement in its nationwide 3G mobile broadband network. The US telecom ace has decided to upgrade its HSPA 7.2 standard based 3G network to HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access Plus), which will double the existing network throughput. With this announcement, Ma Bell seems to have tweaked its previous plan of a direct upgrade from 3G to 4G. The HSPA+ upgrade will catapult network speeds to offer a maximum downstream speed of 14.4 megabits per second (Mbps), compared to 7.2 Mbps enabled by the HSPA 7.2 network. AT&T plans to cover 250 million people with the advancement by fourth-quarter 2010, thereby expanding the reach of its high-speed network footprint. The world’s largest wireless carrier by sales posted adjusted (excluding one-time items such as impairment charges) earnings per ADS of US$2.56, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of US$2.49. Net profit surged to £8.6 billion (US$13.7 billion) from £3.08 billion (US$4.9 billion) a year ago, boosted by higher sales, lower impairment losses and reduced tax expenses. The year-ago quarter’s profit was dented by a £5.9 billion ($9.4 billion) impairment charge on the carrier’s operations in Spain, Turkey and Ghana. Consolidated revenues leapt 8.4% year-over-year to reach £44.5 billion (US$71 billion) on the back of favorable exchange rate swings and healthy contribution from the operator’s Asia-Pacific and Middle East operation which offset weak performances in the key European markets.
Sprint Nextel (S) has reportedly abandoned its plan of selling Google’s (GOOG) so-called “Superphone” Nexus One. Instead, the third largest US wireless operator will focus on its forthcoming 4G smartphone HTC EVO 4G, which the carrier reckons is a better option for its subscribers. The move makes Sprint the second major national carrier to dump Nexus One after Verizon (VZ). This is bad news for Google as it disrupts the Internet giant’s marketing strategy for the device. Sprint announced in March 2010 that it will offer a CDMA version of Nexus One to its customers. However, the carrier has flipped its decision on the device in favor of EVO 4G, which is superior in terms of phone features and is being designed to run on a faster network. Comparable store sales for company-operated stores and kiosks (stores and kiosks opened at least a year) grew 4.7% year-over-year. This is a key retail performance indicator measuring growth from existing sales locations. As a result, in after-market trade on NYSE, the stock price of RadioShack was up 36 cents (2.36%) to $23.45.
Europe’s first 4G mobile broadband spectrum (radio airwave) auction officially kicked off in Mainz, Germany, on April 12, 2010. The country’s telecom regulator Bundesnetzagentur has reportedly commenced auctioning the 4G radio spectrum, which will be used by the incumbent carriers to roll out mobile broadband services based on the emerging Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard. This represents the first wireless broadband spectrum auction in Germany in nearly a decade. The previous auction, which was held in 2000, allocated spectrum licenses to six operators to roll out 3G wireless broadband services. The 4G auction sets a benchmark for the other leading economies in Europe that are expected to hold spectrum auctions in 2010-2011. This time, Bundesnetzagentur has allowed four operators to bid in the 4G auction, namely, Telefonica (TEF), Deutsche Telekom (DT),

We have upgraded our recommendation for Vodafone (VOD) to Outperform based on the company’s healthy operating results in the last quarter and management’s upbeat guidance. Our assessment also reflects improving business trends in the carrier’s key European markets and opportunities for sustainable growth across the emerging markets. Revenue growth in the most recent quarter was fuelled by the healthy contributions from the Asia-Pacific and Middle East operations. Moreover, subscriber growth was driven by continued healthy net additions in the company’s Indian operation. Vodafone is the world’s largest revenue generating wireless carrier and is only behind China Mobile (CHL) in terms of overall subscriber count among the cellular operators. The carrier’s globally diversified operation is a natural hedge that offsets price competition and currency exchange translation risk that may arise in

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is conducting the 3G auction over the Internet with the bidders having respective passwords for accessing the sale process. Bidders at the auction are vying for a chunk of spectrum to roll out next-generation telecom services in the world’s fastest growing wireless market with roughly 600 million mobile subscribers. A separate spectrum auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is expected to start two days after the close of the 3G auction which may take several days to complete. Winning bidders have to pay for their licenses within 10 days following the auction closure. The DoT recently revealed the bidders’ names for

The carrier plans to introduce a tailor-made version of the popular Opera Mini 5 mobile browser that will offer web access to low-end mobile handsets running on 2G networks.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has outlined its goals for the “National Broadband Plan” (NBP), which the agency will deliver to the Congress on March 16, 2010. The regulator has drafted ambitious proposals that will revolutionize the US broadband industry and provide the necessary infrastructure to connect all the corners of the nation. As a reminder, the NBP is aimed at setting up strategies and appropriate regulatory framework to promote adoption, affordability and wider availability of broadband Internet in the US. Under the directives of Congress, the FCC has chalked out action plans to ensure far-reaching accessibility of broadband in the country. As expected, the FCC’s blueprint includes the previously announced “100 Squared” initiative. The agency expects Internet service providers to offer broadband speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to

Deutsche Telekom continues to face a weak economy with further declines in Germany’s fixed-line telephony business due to intense competition.
We are downgrading Deutsche Telekom (DT), the incumbent telecom carrier in Germany , to Underperform in light of the recent lower-than-expected operating results and management’s tepid outlook for 2010. Reported earnings and revenue for fourth quarter 2009 have missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Deutsche Telekom continues to face a sluggish economy with further declines in Germany’s fixed-line telephony business due to intense competition. The carrier lost a total of 2.1 million fixed voice lines in 2009, largely due to higher customer migration to all-IP lines. The lackluster performance can be attributed, in part, to general economic weakness. It also appears that Deutsche Telekom is losing share to other players in this market. The company’s domestic and UK operations remain significantly challenged by regulatory pricing pressure. Termination rate (inter-operator fees) cuts

Wall Street seems obsessed with pigs these days. PIIGS, that is – Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain – the smaller economies in Europe. Many people worry whether these countries can honor their sovereign debt because of high, already-existing debt levels. And the U.S. Senate might even investigate Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) for allegedly hiding Greek debt from European regulators… Talk about locking the barn door after the Trojan horse has already bolted. Also foolishly, investors have vilified every single company in those countries. Fears have spread that neighboring economies are suspect as well, by association. And in response, investors have either backed away from that region altogether or full-out shorted related stocks. Either way, they don’t know what they’re missing out on. But not to worry. That very panic

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to spend lavishly on expanding broadband access in the U.S. The FCC’s forthcoming National Broadband Plan (NBP) will propose up to $25 billion in new federal spending to Congress to expand nationwide broadband lines and build a wireless Internet network. The estimate includes $12 billion to $16 billion to be spent over the next 10 years to construct a wireless broadband network for police and firefighters (emergency public safety broadband system). The FCC plans to offset the hefty spending on NBP with the revenue generated through a spectrum auction and other measures. The agency aims to auction a portion of the public-safety spectrum (airwave) called the “D-block” in 2011 to fund the spending plan. The 3G WCDMA spectrum auction was recently deferred to August-September 2010 due to lack of available spectrum. India’s Department of Telecommunications (“DoT”) has been in a prolonged negotiation with the country’s Ministry of Defence as India’s armed forces had to vacate specific 3G spectrum required for the auction. As per the information provided by the DoT on Feb 25, 2010, the last date for submission of applications for the operators is March 19, 2010.
We downgrade our recommendation for RadioShack Corp. (RSH) to Neutral, due to our concern regarding future sales potential of the company’s non-wireless product categories. RadioShack’s fourth quarter 2009 financial results were mostly in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimates. But that was mainly due to significant growth of the wireless businesses. In the fourth quarter, sales of its TV Converter box was just $13.1 million compared to $54.4 million in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted net profit of €905 million (US$1.3 billion) represents a 5% annualized improvement. However, on a reported basis, the carrier registered a net loss of €3 million (US$4 million) in the fourth quarter as it was hit by impairment charges of €500 million (US$738 million) in its Southern and Eastern Europe segments, primarily in Greece which is suffering from a severe financial crisis.
RadioShack Corp. (RSH) declared fourth quarter 2009 financial results yesterday after the closing bell. Overall the company performed well as both its top-line and bottom-line increased over the prior-year quarter. However, serious concerns remain regarding RadioShack’s non-wireless product categories and RadioShack Kiosks sales. GAAP net income, in the fourth quarter, was $75.7 million or 60 cents per share, compared to a net income of $60.1 million or 48 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Fourth quarter earnings of 60 cents per share barely topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 59 cents. Quarterly net revenue was $1,318.2 million, up 4.7% year-over-year. However, this was slightly below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,325 million.
The proposed merger of the UK units of European telecom giants Deutsche Telekom (DT) and France Telecom (FTE) in a 50-50 joint venture faces the possibility of an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the UK antitrust watchdog. OFT is of the opinion that the merger deal could significantly subdue competition in the UK wireless market. The companies had announced their merger plan in September 2009 and filed their appeals to the European Commission, the executive body of the European Union (EU), for approval of the deal in January 2010. The commission is expected to provide a ruling on the case by March 1, 2010.
President Barack Obama’s budget proposal on February 1, 2010, indicated that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US telecom regulator, could get an estimated $6.4 billion boost from the use of spectrum (radio airwaves) over the next ten years. In his fiscal 2011 budget proposal, the US president proposed the extension of FCC’s authority to auction spectrum, which is slated to expire on September 30, 2012. This would bring in at least $1.6 billion by way of revenue for the US government from auctioned licensed spectrum through 2020. The move is aimed at fostering a widespread accessibility of broadband and associated technologies in the country and boost adoption in urban regions. Moreover, President Obama has proposed new user fees for unauctioned spectrum, which could garner another $4.8 billion. The budget

More bad news for telecom operators and 3G hopefuls in India as the country’s much-delayed 3G spectrum (radio airwaves) auction has been postponed again and is not likely to commence until August-September 2010. This represents the fourth postponement over the last year. The 3G WCDMA spectrum auction (scheduled for January 14, 2010) was deferred to mid-February 2010 in late 2009 due to lack of available spectrum. India’s Department of Telecommunications (“DoT”) is working closely with the country’s Ministry of Defence as India’s armed forces have to vacate specific 3G spectrum required for the auction. The Mininstry of Defence cannot vacate the spectrum until a fiber-optic cable network is built to connect key defence locations, a process which may continue till mid-2010.
US telecom regulator Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) is digging deeper into the mobile “Early Termination Fees (ETFs)”, a widespread practice in the wireless industry. The agency has asked the US wireless carriers to justify the hefty ETFs they charge their contract customers. This brings top-tier incumbent wireless operators Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), Sprint Nextel (S) and Deutsche Telekom’s (DT) US arm T-mobile USA under the agency’s probe. Moreover, search engine giant Google (GOOG), which is selling Nexus One Android phone, has also been brought under the FCC scanner. Google is charging extra cancellation fees on top of the ETFs levied by T-mobile USA, which offers Nexus One under a two-year service contract.
European telecom giants Deutsche Telekom (DT) and France Telecom (FTE) have reportedly filed their appeals to the European Commission for approval of the proposed merger of their UK units in a 50-50 joint venture. The European Commission will review the merger proposal and is expected to provide an initial ruling in February 2010. If eventually approved, Deutsche Telekom’s British subsidiary T-mobile UK will combine with France Telecom’s Orange UK in a historic merger (expected to conclude by mid 2010). Moreover, the UK competition authorities are currently considering a potential investigation of the said merger as consumer groups are increasingly concerned about the impact of the deal on the competitive scenario in the UK mobile market. The companies announced their merger plans in September 2009. In the proposed merger, Deutsche Telekom

The company has also revamped its prepaid wireless service plans to counter stiff competition in the low-cost unlimited prepaid wireless market. MetroPCS’ new family of nationwide unlimited (voice, text and data) service plans includes four all-inclusive month plans ranging $40 to $60 per month. The revised service plans (called “Wireless for All”), which start at $40 per month Incorporatedlude all taxes and regulatory fees. Other plans start at $45, $50 and $60 and offer additional facilities including unlimited international long distance calling to more than 1,000 destinations in over 100 countries.
Motorola Inc. (MOT) yesterday introduced the latest addition to its smartphone portfolio, the BACKFLIP. This device has its keypad at the back, which can fold out rather than slide out. BACKFLIP will combine the social networking and personalization of MOTOBLUR software with the multitasking performance. Motorola will start shipment of this mobile phone in the current quarter. After Cliq and Droid, BACKFLIP is the third 3G smartphone of Motorola. All the three phones are using Google Inc’s (GOOG) Android software as the operating system. Cliq was introduced in the U.S. by T-Mobile, a division of Deutsch Telekom AG (DT), whereas Verizon Wireless (VZ) was the carrier partner for Droid. Industry sources predicted that both Cliq and Droid received favorable market traction. This prompted Motorola to opt for more advanced smartphone

The year 2010 promises to be the year of super-fast wireless networks. T-Mobile USA, the US subsidiary of German telecom giant Deutsche Telekom (DT), has joined the high-speed hoopla in the US as it has reportedly upgraded its nationwide 3G mobile broadband network to the HSPA 7.2 standard. HSPA 7.2 offers peak theoretical download speeds of 7.2 megabits per second (Mbps), which has effectively doubled network throughput from the existing 3.6 Mbps. However, as the available bandwidth will be split among many users, speeds may differ in practical settings. Although T-mobile USA’s 3G network is the smallest among the four big carriers in the US, it has already covered a population of 200 million. The company promises to be the first carrier to launch HSPA+ standard based 3.5G network in
