We are upgrading our long-term recommendation on PPG Industries (PPG) to Outperform from Neutral. The company’s strategy of diversifying its business across various products and geographies has come in handy in difficult times of the economy. It has trumped the Zacks Consensus Estimates over the last four quarters, which is a testimony to the fact that it has done well even when the economy was under pressure. More importantly, the company’s revenues from emerging markets grew over the last three years and constituted 27% of total revenue in 2011. PPG Industries is focused on tapping the potential of emerging markets and acquired the coatings business of Colpisa earlier this year. The acquisition has led the company to become the only major coatings supplier to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with

3M Aerospace, part of 3M Company (MMM), meets the problem of substructure erosion in aircraft areas, like lavatories, galleys and doorways, which are frequently exposed to moisture through introduction of 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes. These tapes cover the floor panel joints and the larger areas are protected from moisture by these wide-area tapes. With the constant erosion, the floor panels and beams in the substructure are required to be replaced. These replacements costs about $30,000 to $100,000 per aircraft, as such protection is very essential. The 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes resists the spread of fire and have long service life. The tapes are used for seam sealing, wide wet area protection and beam protection and can be easily and quickly installed. It also meets the new policy of the FAA.

We will have representation from the who’s who of the corporate world, with a number of bellwether players on tap to come out with results. While earnings will remain the primary focus during the week, we have a number of market-moving economic releases on deck as well. However, meager gains failed to prevent the Dow and S&P 500 from suffering their worst weekly performance this year. Global economic concerns weighed on investors through the week and their influence carried onto Friday. Moreover, tepid housing data made matters worse on Friday, limiting gains.
E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Com (DD) inked a $100 million deal with the Chinese solar energy technology manufacturer Yingli Green Energy (YGE), whereby DuPont will supply its polyvinyl fluoride film and photovoltaic “paste,” which will be used in the production of Yingli’s modules for solar panels. The deal is aimed at accelerating the adoption of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. DuPont’s solar energy materials help to increase efficiency, extend the lifetime of modules and ultimately help in reducing overall system costs to make solar increasingly more competitive with other forms of energy generation. According to industry estimates, over the next five years, 20% average annual growth is expected in solar installations globally. DuPont expects its solar photovoltaic market sales to reach $2 billion by 2014

It is said that opportunities are never lost — someone else will catch the one you miss. And the saying remains true to the equity market. No one wants to miss a good opportunity to make exceptional profits from stock markets. So, is this the time to take the plunge? Or should we wait for the markets to fall further? Well, considering the increasing concerns related to the European economy, it’s hard to predict the direction of market movement. However, given the significant exposure of U.S. banks to weak European countries, it would be difficult for the country to escape unscathed. So, with the debt crisis picture in the Eurozone getting dirtier, the risk of another major worldwide stock market slump is sky high. Coupled with our own unrelenting problems

The company achieved year-over-year top-line growth of 9.6%, as five out of six segments saw revenue growth. The bottom-line slipped 1% however, missing our estimate by 9 cents.
by Steve McDonald, Investment U Research Monday, October 17, 2011 Legendary investor Jim Rogers said recently that he owns all commodities, but that he likes agricultural commodities most of all. Agriculture, according to Rogers, is in the worst shape of all in terms of commodity supply. Why? No one wants to be a farmer and the world population growth is outpacing the growth of food production. According to UN figures, farmland is in short supply and is expected to lag food demand. By 2050, food demand is projected to grow by 70 percent and increased land availability by five percent. The chemical industry itself consumes 26% of its own output. Major industrial customers include rubber and plastic products, textiles, apparel, petroleum refining, pulp and paper, and primary metals. The chemical industry has shown rapid growth for more than fifty years. The fastest-growing areas have involved the manufacture of synthetic organic polymers used as plastics, fibers and elastomers. Globally, the chemical industry is mainly concentrated in three areas of the world: Western Europe, North America and Japan. The European community is the largest producer, followed by the U.S. and Japan. Indices had been trending down initially and sentiment turned further negative following a disappointing consumer confidence report. But signals in the Fed minutes of a likely third round of economic stimulus helped markets recoup losses and log their third-straight day of gains. After a roller-coaster ride the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) finally posted a 20-point or 0.2%, gain and closed at 11,559.64. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) increased by 0.2% and finished the day at 1,212.88. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 2,576.11 after gaining 0.6%.
The plastics and chemicals maker Eastman Chemical Co. (EMN) announced that it has completed the acquisition of petrochemical company Sterling Chemicals Inc. for $100 million in cash. The deal was originally announced in June 2011. The deal is expected to be accretive to 2011 earnings per share. The transaction, which includes Sterling’s plasticizer and acetic acid manufacturing assets in Texas City, Texas, is expected to be accretive to Eastman’s full-year 2012 earnings per share in excess of its cost of capital. Eastman plans to renovate and restart Sterling’s currently idled plasticizer manufacturing facility to produce non-phthalate plasticizers. This additional capacity will enable the company’s performance chemicals and intermediates (PCI) segment to serve the growing market demand for non-phthalate alternatives. This acquisition supports Eastman’s growth strategy for its plasticizer product line,

The Trade Deficit rose in May to $50.23 billion from $43.66 billion in April. The rise in the trade deficit is bad news for the economy, and the level is very dangerous. For the month it was up 15.0%; worse than the $44.0 billion consensus expectation. On a year over year basis, the total trade deficit was up 19.1% from $42.17 billion a year ago. The trade balance has two major parts: trade in goods and trade in services. America’s problem is always on the goods side; we actually routinely have a small surplus in services. Relative to April, the goods deficit rose to $64.88 billion from $58.16 billion. That is a month to month increase of 11.6%.
The specter of another recession haunted investors and dealt a body blow to the markets which crashed to their worst day since the economic crisis of 2008. On Wednesday, just when the Dow looked like ending its longest losing streak of nine days since Jimmy Carter held office, the index plunged over 500 points to record its ninth-steepest decline. The broad sell-off in the market and resulting panic led to the Dow, Standard & Poor 500 (S&P) 500 and the Nasdaq plunging 4.3%, 4.8% and 5.1%, respectively. Each benchmark posted its share of records, though none of these brought any cheer to investors. The Dow settled at 11,383.83, losing 512 points, the steepest such decline since Dec. 1, 2008. However, the 512-point decline was far from the 778-points slide that

The company expects to see higher demand in 2011 compared with 2010, but intends to remain focused on continued cost management entered in 2011 with about $2 billion in cash and short-term investments, which is a historically high level for the company and includes proceeds from a $1 billion debt offering in November 2010.
