We are pleased to hear that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) response on clinical trial-related issues. Last month, the agency had warned the company for not maintaining proper records during the trial of ceftobiprole, a broad-spectrum antibiotic for the treatment of complicated skin infections and nosocomial pneumonia. J&J had licensed the drug from Swiss drugmaker Basilea Pharmaceuticals in 2005. The issue must be resolved for the drug to be approved. The new drug application for ceftobiprole has been pending since May 2007. The approval is getting delayed since protocol-related issues have been present from the initial stages. In November last year, the FDA issued a Complete Response letter stating that it could not approve the new drug application at that time as

Yesterday, The Medicines Company (MDCO) announced that it has withdrawn its European marketing authorization application (MAA) for the 200mg 3-7 day daily dose therapy of oritavancin. The company is developing oritavancin, a novel, semi-synthetic lipoglycopeptide antibiotic candidate for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI) caused by gram positive pathogens. Currently available therapies include Cubist Pharma’s (CBST) Cubicin. Oritavancin became a part of The Medicine Company’s pipeline following the February 2009 acquisition of Targanta Therapeutics. Oritavancin, if developed successfully, could be used in the hospital setting, most likely in the critical care setting in the intensive care unit (ICU), emergency department or surgical suite. It is primarily designed for patients with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or vancomycin resistant infections, which represents a large and underserved market.
by Matt Weinschenk, Senior Analyst, The White Cap Report Cubist Proves Saving Lives Isn’t Good Enough With the recent surge in cases of MSRA (methicillin-resistant staphyloccus aureus), or at least a surge in reporting, one would think it was good news for Cubist Pharmaceutical’s (Nasdaq: CBST). It may have been, had Cubist not been blindsided by a business-rocking revelation Tuesday. MRSA is a big problem. It’s a widely prevalent and pervasive bacteria found in hospital facilities, and it’s the most common cause of staph infections. Patients contract these infections from catheters, surgeries or I.V. drug needles. As we use (some would say over-use) anti-biotics to treat infections, only the resistant germs remain. Each successive generation of bacteria are more resilient to treatment and we continually need stronger and stronger drugs
