In late September, Cell Therapeutics (CTIC) announced that a second independent radiologic review of data from the pivotal trial PIX301 of lead drug pixantrone for aggressive NHL confirmed the statistical significance of response and progression endpoints. With this positive development, we believe pixantrone is getting closer to approval. We are encouraged by the FDA’s decision to allow Cell Therapeutics to re-submit the NDA for pixantrone for review without the need for an additional trial. We are therefore upgrading our rating on the stock from Neutral to Outperform. Cell Therapeutics second most advanced pipeline candidate, Opaxio, is being studied as a potential maintenance therapy for women with advanced ovarian cancer who achieve complete remission following first-line therapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin. The phase III study, GOG0212, has already enrolled more than

Cell Therapeutics Inc. based in Seattle, Washington, is focused on developing drugs for cancer. The company’s lead pipeline candidate, pixantrone, is being developed for the treatment of hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. The approval was denied due to concerns that the late stage trial PIX301 (which formed the basis of the NDA filing) had not sufficiently proved the effectiveness of the drug.
Cell Therapeutics Inc. (CTIC) recently announced that data from an early stage study of its lead pipeline candidate, pixantrone, for an additional indication, was published in Cancer, an online journal. The study (n=28) tested the efficacy and safety of pixantrone as a combination therapy with fludarabine, dexamethasone and Biogen/Roche’s (BIIB/RHHBY) Rituxan (FPD-R) for the treatment of relapsed or refractory indolent non-hodgkin’s lymphoma (INHL). In this study pixantrone was substituted for mitoxantrone in the FPD-R regimen compared to the standard FND-R regimen. The data revealed that pixantrone in combination with fludarabine, dexamethasone and Rituxan was highly active in patients with relapsed or refractory INHL and produced complete response (CR) in 63% of patients. The overall response rate (ORR) was 89%. The response lasted for 40 months in the longest responding patient

Cell Therapeutics (CTIC) recently decided to exchange up to 60 million shares of its common stock for $30 million of notes. Liquidity crisis at the company continues to remain a major concern for us. Earlier, in April 2010, the company raised $18.5 million through preferred stock and warrants. Although Cell Therapeutics has taken several steps to reduce the burn rate, its cash crunch will continue for the time being. During 2009, Cell Therapeutics reduced its debt burden considerably. However, the company’s policy to reduce debt level by converting into common stock dilutes shareholder value. The liquidity crisis at Cell Therapeutics has become more prominent since its New Drug Application for lead candidate, Pixuvri was denied. The company has been seeking approval for the drug to treat relapsed or refractory aggressive

Cell Therapeutics (CTIC) recently reduced its workforce by 36 employees. The reduction in staff strength along with the elimination of other planned expenses is likely to result in savings of about $16 million in 2010. The company now expects operating expenses in 2010 to be approximately $60 million, a 21% reduction from its earlier projection. Earlier this month, Cell Therapeutics received a complete response letter (CRL) from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Pixuvri (pixantrone dimaleate), its lead pipeline candidate. This setback led the company take the decision on retrenchment to reduce expenses. The company was seeking approval for pixantrone for the treatment of relapsed or refractory aggressive non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) in patients who have not responded to other treatment options. The plan, to be effective from Jan 7, 2010, has been designed so that a potential buyer has to discuss any offer with Cell Therapeutics’ board of directors before approaching the shareholders directly. Cell Therapeutics will give out options that would enable its shareholders to buy a fraction of a share of preferred stock in case of an acquisition of more than 20% of the company’s shares.
