Corning’s (GLW) fourth quarter 2011 earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 8 cents, or 26.5%. However, shares gained just 0.77% after the company reported, despite losing 10.74% during the day, reflecting continued challenges in the company’s display and specialty materials businesses. Revenue Corning reported revenue of $1.89 billion, which was down 9.1% sequentially and up 6.9% year over year. The stronger yen helped results slightly in the last quarter. Revenue by Segment The Display Technologies segment generated around 41% of total revenue. The segment was down 4.3% sequentially and up 4.0% year over year. Samsung Precision (“SCP”) LCD glass volumes were down 7% sequentially (although higher than the revised guidance), as a major customer purchased below the committed amount. Volumes in the wholly-owned business were in line with expectations.

With the whole world increasingly going mobile, top phone makers such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM) are scrambling to bring smarter devices to the market. In fact, phone makers are touting screen size, resolution, virtual or real QWERTY keyboards, video conferencing, recording and streaming, social networking, office integration and what not to boost sales. While our parents may have considered a phone good if it offered noise-free, good-quality sound, we are more on the lookout for contacts management, social networking integration and media support, while our kids would rather be using the device to listen to music, capture and stream video and play games. Or that is what the phone companies would like us to do. And considering the level of competition in the

Corning, Inc. (GLW) is a leading developer of advanced glass substrates for multiple markets. June quarter earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny, but guidance was soft, reflecting inventory builds at TV manufacturers, which impacted both the Display and Specialty Materials segments. We continue to believe in Corning’s longer-term prospects, especially with respect to GG and strong position at OEMs. However, while efforts to diversify operations continue, Corning remains highly dependent on display markets. Price erosion in this market and the higher debt level will remain a drag on earnings. Given the above, we are downgrading the shares from Neutral to Underperform. We think downside potential is greater, given the extreme dependence on the display market and the possibility of further weakness in earnings. CORNING INC (GLW): Free

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Wednesday, April 27, 2011 The real news from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) last week was not its stellar earnings report. Since it usually outperforms expectations, the recent results were almost boring. Much more interesting, however, is the lawsuit it filed this month against one of its most critical suppliers, Samsung Electronics, the world’s biggest technology company by sales. One of Samsung’s divisions supplies chips and storage for the iPhone and iPad. This arm gave Apple repeated assurances that its product details remain safe, even from other Samsung divisions. But the suit accuses Samsung, its Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Tab tablet of copying Apple’s iPhone and iPad appearances, thereby violating 10 patents. It follows recent angry comments from Steve Jobs about the other business’ “copycats.” The
