Overall Outlook is Positive The economic downturn and the oil price spike before it had negatively affected the airline industry over the past two years. Now, with the economy on the mend, albeit at a slower-than-expected pace, demand for air travel is increasing from last year’s depressed levels. To combat the recessionary effects, the airlines cut costs, slashed capacity and increased load factor. This momentum also prompted the industry into the current ongoing consolidation phase. Currently, airlines are benefiting from the rebound in traffic Incorporatedluding an increase in business travel and premium service demand. While the industry has thus far been fairly disciplined in managing capacity, it is bound to creep up going forward. This would help to keep fares in check, besides making it easier for travelers to book

Southwest Airlines (LUV), the largest U.S. low-cost airline, has agreed to buy AirTran Holdings Inc. (AAI) for a combination of cash and Southwest shares. The agreement conforms with the consolidation trend in the airline industry. This pending merger would be the third in the last two years following the oil price hike in 2008 and economic downturn in 2009. The trend was initiated with the first merger between Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Northwest in 2008. The second is the ongoing acquisition of Continental Airlines (CAL) by United Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of UAL Corp. (UAUA), scheduled for completion on October 1, 2010. The acquisition of AirTran represents a unique opportunity for Southwest Airlines to expand its presence in key markets. Southwest will gain a valuable market presence in

The pending merger of United Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of UAL Corp. (UAUA), and Continental Airlines (CAL) finally received approval from shareholders of both the companies. Announced on May 3, 2010, the merger won the antitrust approval from the U.S. government in August and received clearance from the European Commission in July. The merger is expected to close by October 1. Upon completion, the UAUA-CAL merger will create the world’s largest airline with enhanced capacity and improved services, overtaking Delta Airlines (DAL), which acquired Northwest Airlines last year. We believe the newly formed company will enjoy a favorable position in an increasingly competitive global and domestic aviation industry and will perform better than any airline standing alone. The integrated company will have fourteen domestic overlapping routes Incorporatedluding Houston-Washington; Cleveland-Denver;

August has been a busy month for airliners with traffic showing signs of increase. The economic downturn in 2009 and the oil price hike in 2008 had affected the airline industry during the past two years. Now, with the economic recovery, demand for air travel is increasing from last year’s depressed levels. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles (RPM), which is the revenue generated for every mile a passenger flies. Unit revenue and capacity rose for most of the airlines in August. The low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) recorded a 6.4% rise in August traffic, the largest growth relative to its peers, on a capacity (or, available seat miles) increase of 3.7% year over year.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, August 19, 2010 Down in areas of Latin America, the normally turbulent airline sector is flying high. Thanks to a booming local booming economy, Brazil’s two largest airlines – GOL Linhas Aereas ADR (NYSE: GOL) and TAM ADR (NYSE: TAM) – are doing quite well for themselves these days. Brazil will expand by 6.5% this year, and should grow by 4.5% in 2011. But more importantly, its middle class increased notably in 2009 to 53% of its 200 million citizens. Those kinds of numbers easily explain how TAM grew revenue-passenger-kilometers three times faster than even its host country’s fast-growing GDP over the last decade. A hop, a skip and a flight away, Chile’s LAN Airlines ADR (NYSE: LFL) has done well itself. Its

The recovery in the global economy is expected to benefit the airline industry with unit revenues slated to rise in the second quarter of 2010. Rising fares, an improvement in international traffic and an overall recovery is expected to drive this growth. Last year’s economic downturn and the preceding year’s steep oil prices had adversely affected the airline industry. We believe that this news will have a positive impact on share price movements of airline companies in the near future. Despite concerns about the recent rise in fuel prices, recovery in business travel and cargo has accelerated along with gains in international and domestic passenger revenue. Moreover, airline capacity is also expected to improve in 2010. Among all the major U.S. airlines, second-quarter 2010 unit revenue of Delta Air Lines (DAL), the

U.S. Airlines Emerging from Recession With the global economy continuing to improve, there is steady improvement in demand for air travel as well as cargo since the beginning of 2010, after being badly affected by the economic downturn. Business travel, which is directly affected by the economic environment, plunged to an all-time low in 2009 as many corporations slashed travel budgets. Leisure travel as well as cargo also showed a remarkable decline. With improving economic sentiment, business travel and demand for air cargo are gradually catching up. However, leisure demand is still low and is expected to take a greater time to reverse, since spending in this area is highly discretionary. We may not see a noticeable improvement in that segment until clear evidence of labor-market improvements take hold. To

We believe the company’s strong balance sheet, low costs, several revenue initiatives, network optimization and hedging strategy make for a compelling investment opportunity. However, heavy discounts, concerns on labor costs, fuel price volatility and technology investment by the company, keep us on the sidelines.
The proposed merger of U.S. air carriers United Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of UAL Corp. (UAUA), and Continental Airlines (CAL) triggers concerns of retrenchment, especially in Houston, where Continental is based, and Cleveland, where Continental operates a hub. Since the airline industry is highly unionized, this can pose a problem while integrating the workforce. The airlines stated that there would be some job losses while integrating the operations of the two companies, but have no plans for large cuts to the combined workforce of approximately 90,000 employees. The deal is awaiting approval from shareholders and an anti-trust review by the Department of Justice. The chief executive of United Airlines is confident that any U.S. regulatory concerns about the carrier’s proposed merger with Continental Airlines will be satisfactorily addressed.
The Air Transport Association (ATA) filed a lawsuit against the National Mediation Board (NMB) to stop the Obama administration from putting in effect the new rules for unions, which makes the organization easier to assemble workers at airlines and railroads. NMB coordinates labor relations with airlines and rail companies under the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Airlines and railroads employ more than 500,000 workers, and about two-thirds of those are already in unions, which is much higher than the overall union membership rate of 12%. Under the new rule, union organization would be decided on the number of votes cast. The previous 76-year-old rule required a majority of an entire work group to approve unionization, effectively counting those who do not vote as “no” votes. Thus, ATA considers the new rule

This merger would give birth to the world’s largest airline by size, pushing Delta Airlines (DAL) back. The deal, which was announced today, will still have to gain approval from shareholders and clear an anti-trust review by the Department of Justice. The airlines resumed merger talks last month after negotiations collapsed in 2008. Deal Facts The merger is reported to cost a whopping $3.2 billion (based on the current stock price) to United, which would involve compensating each Continental shareholder with 1.05 shares of the former company. This exchange will leave United owning 53% of the newly formed company, which will be christened as United

For the airline sector, consolidation is in the air. And with good reason too. Last year, the industry lost $9.4 billion. This year, the International Air Transport Association expects it to lose another $2.8 billion. On the positive side, that makes buying up rivals very cheap. That’s a good thing, considering that no-frills companies like Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) are adding customers, thanks to the recession. The higher-end competition needs to make a profit somehow. Airlines on both sides of the Atlantic leapt at the chance to conduct mergers. Over in Europe, British Airways ADR (OTC: BAIRY) and Iberia announced potential plans last November. And they just recently reached an agreement on the tie-up, which will create the third-largest airline in Europe. Meanwhile UAL Corporation (Nasdaq: UAUA) – a.k.a United
