The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed a larger-than-expected increase in natural gas supplies, as mild temperatures in parts of the country have restricted the commodity’s requirement for power burn. The injection – the ninth in 2012 – has added to already bloated inventories. Gas stocks – currently some 40% above the benchmark five-year average levels – are at their highest point for this time of the year, reflecting low demand amid robust onshore output. This has constantly pressured spot prices that slipped to a 10-year low in April. However, the most recent build – though above expectations – was still significantly lower than the average for this time, cutting the surplus relative to last year and the five-year average.
It’s crazy to think that in just the last three years, China has become the world’s second largest economy, the world’s largest energy consumer, and the world’s second largest oil consumer. A recent PriceWaterhouseCoopers report even estimates, “China could be the largest economy in the world as early as 2020…” Whether it happens by then, I honestly don’t know. But neither does anyone else. In fact, long-term estimates like these are almost never right. There’s one thing you can count on, though. No matter when (or even if) China takes the number one spot in the global economy, it’s going to require a great deal of energy either way. And it’s more important than ever investors take a close look at what’s going on. Because, when it comes to energy,

If all goes according to plan, by the end of June, Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL)… … will start saving $300 million a year on fuel costs. … will add 5,000 new jobs to its payroll. … will see its share price steadily rising for the foreseeable future. How does it expect to do all of this? By being the first airline ever to provide itself with its own domestic fuel. Let me explain… Delta’s Bold Move into Oil Refinement Last year, domestic prices for airfare hit an all-time record high according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. The No. 1 reason for this is fuel cost. For Delta, nearly 40% of its revenue went to keeping its planes fueled. And so far this year, these costs only continue to rise.

The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed that crude stockpiles jumped to their highest level since May 2011, as imports climbed. However, on the bullish side, the agency’s report revealed that refined product inventories – gasoline and distillate – dropped sharply from their previous week levels on stronger demand. Meanwhile, refinery utilization rate reflected an increase of 0.8%. The Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) Petroleum Status Report, which contains data for the previous week ending Friday, outlines information regarding the weekly change in petroleum inventories held and produced by the U.S., both locally and abroad. The report provides an overview of the level of reserves and their movements, thereby helping investors understand the demand/supply dynamics of petroleum products. It is an indicator of current oil prices and volatility that affect

Invest in the shortage that currently exists – LNG tankers – which will only be exasperated if the United States starts exporting. There’s a great, strange story by F. Scott Fitzgerald called, The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. In it, the Washington family has discovered a mountain that’s made entirely of diamond in an uncharted part of Montana. It’s just one giant, mountain-sized chunk. The tale deals with greed and the basics of the law of supply. But the Washingtons can’t let anyone know their diamond mountain exists… If people found out, it’d collapse the diamond market, making the precious stone worthless. And the Washingtons themselves would be cast into poverty. So, it’s this strange dual existence for the Washingtons. They’re the wealthiest family in the world, but only

In its weekly release, Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) reported a rise in the U.S. rig count (number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the country). This can be attributed to an increase in the tally of oil-directed rigs, partially offset by cutbacks in natural gas and miscellaneous rig counts. The Baker Hughes rig count, issued since 1944, acts as an important yardstick for drilling contractors such as Transocean Inc. (RIG), Diamond Offshore (DO), Noble Corp. (NE), Nabors Industries (NBR), Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN), Helmerich & Payne (HP), etc. in gauging the overall business environment of the oil and gas industry. Analysis of the Data Weekly Summary: Rigs engaged in exploration and production in the U.S. totaled 1,984 for the week ended March 16, 2012. This

It was the “super spike” in the price of oil which called for prices to dramatically increase from the $115 level to an unthinkable $150-$200 a barrel.
Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK), the second-largest U.S. natural-gas producer, seeks to fill the funding gap for its 2012 expenditure that resulted from the low natural gas prices, through divestitures. The company plans to raise as much as $10 billion to $12 billion from assets sales and joint ventures to cope with the mounting debt level and sinking gas prices. Gas prices plummeted to a 10-year low of $2.231 per million British thermal units on January 23, 2012. Consequently, last week, Chesapeake announced the curtailment of its daily gas production by 500 million cubic feet. The company plans to double that amount to cut its spending.
South Africa is playing host to the climate conference, which opens today in the city of Durban. Climate change conferences focus on reducing global temperatures, which appear to accelerate global warming. The Kyoto Protocol (1997), the game-changer in climate negotiations had identified developed countries as primarily responsible for high levels of green house gas emissions following decades of unbridled industrialization. The protocol requires countries to lower emissions according to pre-agreed targets. The commitment period that started in 2008 will conclude in 2012. Therefore, the Durban conference comes at an important juncture. Governments had agreed last year that emissions need to be reduced to keep global temperature rises at less than 2 degrees Celsius. However, according to EU negotiator Artur Runge-Metzger, recent reports caution that the world was looking at warming

The Obama Administration has set its eyes on developing domestic shale gas (natural gas trapped within dense rock formations) from sources such as the vast Marcellus Shale, which stretches from New York to Virginia. Besides being significantly cheaper than crude oil, reliance on shale gas will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change issues are dominating international forums. The U.S. has committed to reduce carbon emissions by 7% in 2012. Shale gas makes sound economic sense and would ensure cleanliness. It also represents a viable energy strategy vis a vis the stranglehold of OPEC, which accounts for 42% of global oil supplies and 18% of natural gas. Moreover, the substitution of domestic shale gas for coal/imported crude oil has other advantages, such as aiding local industry and employment and addressing balance

The earnings were also better than the year-earlier profit of $1.50. The outperformance was mainly on the back of higher price realizations and better global refining margins, partially offset by lower upstream volumes as well as the absence of equity earnings from LUKOIL and higher taxes. Revenues in the reported quarter jumped more than 28% year over year to $63.6 billion, but missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $68.1 billion. Segmental Performance Exploration and Production (E&P): The segment reported adjusted earnings of $2.2 billion during the quarter, reflecting an impressive 45.6% growth from the year-ago level of $1.5 billion.
All eyes are on Europe today, where leaders are expected to announce the much-delayed plan to tackle the common currency’s problems. And while we wait for news out of Europe, the positive tone of this morning’s earnings reports from a number of key companies and the monthly Durable Goods reading should keep the market mood favorable. Last night’s Amazon (AMZN) miss notwithstanding, the overall tone of earnings reports thus far in this reporting cycle in general and this morning in particular has been reassuringly positive. There are still some lingering questions about next year’s earnings expectations, but overall the earnings picture remains strong. This morning’s September Durable Goods report came roughly in-line with expectations on the ‘headline’ basis, but was significantly better than expected on the ‘core’ basis.
The earnings parade continues even as the market tries to come to terms with the Apple surprise and waits for the expected weekend deal out of Europe. We also have economic data this morning about September CPI and Housing Starts, but they will likely have less traction in today’s market given the focus on earnings and Europe. The September CPI number was largely inline expectations, both on the ‘headline’ as well as ‘core’ basis. Given the recent pullback in commodity prices and the continued slack in the broader economy, inflation will likely have less staying power than would otherwise be the case. However, persistent ‘hot’ CPI readings will make it difficult for Bernanke to rally all FOMC members behind him as we have seen in recent meetings. The Fed dissenters
