by Carl Delfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, November 17, 2011 I’ll never forget my first visit as a teenager to the commodity-trading pit of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). The swirling bright colored jackets, the shouting and rapid hand signals (looked like arm wrestling to me) were captivating and reminded me of past family gatherings. It was also the polar opposite of my later visit to the currency trading floor of JP Morgan at 1 Wall Street – row after row of white shirts hunched over computer screens and dry IMF statistics. Commodities sure looked like more fun to me. My image of commodity markets hasn’t changed all that much since. It’s a volatile and wild ride where even a tiny bit of new information affecting supply or demand

We maintain our Neutral recommendation on Comstock Resources Inc. (CRK) with a target price of $33. Comstock has clearly emerged as a pure-play onshore operator following the divestiture of its offshore Gulf of Mexico assets in 2008, with a resource-play focused production base. Comstock’s major position in the prolific Haynesville Shale play and existing Cotton Valley centric East Texas producing assets provides it with a multi-year inventory of low-risk development drilling opportunities. Supplemented with a robust balance sheet, Comstock remains well positioned to maintain a strong growth trajectory in the near-to-medium term. However, the company’s highly gas weighted reserves/production profile and exposure to the inherently cyclical and volatile exploration and production sector offset these strengths and remain key areas of concern, in our view. In particular, Comstock’s high natural gas

Oil and natural gas firm Comstock Resources Inc. (CRK) reported weaker-than-expected fourth quarter results as low natural gas prices more than offset a rise in production volumes. The loss from operations came in at 15 cents per share, much wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 7 cents. In the year-ago period, the company earned 22 cents per share (adjusted for after-tax impairment charges). Oil and gas sales were down 9.9% year-over-year to $90.2 million. Estimate Surprise Trend It was the company’s third negative earnings surprise in the past four quarters. Comstock has performed poorly during this period, with its average earnings surprise being -48.4%. This implies that the company has missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 48.4% over the last four quarters. Volume Growth The company’s operational performance during

Yesterday, oil and natural gas firm Comstock Resources Inc. (CRK) provided an operational update about its recently completed third quarter. Average production was up 9% sequentially to about 184 million cubic feet equivalent per day (MMcfe/d), reflecting the success of Comstock’s enhanced onshore drilling programs. The company drilled a total of 9 wells during the quarter, with a 100% success rate. This year, Comstock’s drilling programs are focused on developing its Haynesville shale properties in East Texas and North Louisiana . As part of that effort, the company drilled 7 successful wells in DeSoto Parish , North Louisiana during the third quarter (3 wells are in Toledo Bend North field, 3 in the Logansport field and one is in the Mansfield field), which had an average per well initial production
