by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, August 26, 2010 Not that long ago, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) made a $1.5 billion bid for 3Par (NYSE: PAR), which creates high-end storage systems and data management products. Its intent: to break into the IT services business. Rivals such as IBM (NYSE: IBM) and EMC (NYSE: EMC) saw that as a direct challenge. And Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) disliked the move so much it, waged $1.6 billion of its own. That should come as no surprise, considering its bold acquisitions over the past few years. Its recent catches include network device maker 3Com, mobile device company Palm, and tech services provider Electronic Data Sytems. But not to be left behind, Dell followed HP into several of those markets. Most notably, it bought Perot Systems

And, as they so often are, the masses were wrong. It’s not like I went out on a limb or anything either. All I said in November 2008 was that investors should load up on small-cap stocks for 2009. But boy, did I hear it: “You’re nuts. We’re in the throes of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Small-caps will be lucky to make it out alive.” I paid little attention to the criticism. And that’s simply because the historical precedent was undeniable. Time and again, history has shown that small-cap companies traditionally outperform their larger-cap peers in the wake of a recession. It’s happened in every
