We have reaffirmed our Neutral recommendation on Comerica Inc. (CMA) based on its fundamentals, stress test clearance and the subsequent capital deployment efforts as well as the current economic environment. Fourth Quarter Results Comerica Inc. reported fourth-quarter 2011 operating earnings of 60 cents per share. However, the reported earnings included 12 cents per share of merger and restructuring charges related to the acquisition of Sterling Bancshares Inc. After considering this expense, net income attributable to common shares came in at 48 cents per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 46 cents. Comerica’s results reflected a growth in net interest income and a decrease in loan loss provisions driven by an improvement in credit quality. However, a fall in non-interest income and a rise in expenses were on the downside.

Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Fitch Ratings has affirmed M&T Bank Corp.‘s (MTB) long- and short-term Issuer Default Ratings at ‘A-’ and ‘F1,’ respectively. The rating action follows the closure of M&T’s acquisition of Wilmington Trust Corp. on May 16, 2011. The rating outlook remains Negative. The proposed corporate restructuring of M&T announced on June 30, 2011 led to the rating affirmation. M&T’s recently accomplished the purchase of Wilmington Trust backed by capital raises. According to the rating agency, the capital infusion should help overall capital levels to be consistent with those that M&T had at the end of third quarter 2010 (tangible equity to tangible asset ratio of 5.96% and a Tier 1 risk-based capital ratio of 9.45%). Yet, M&T’s capital ratios are still at the lower range of the rating agency’s rated peer group.

We have reiterated our Neutral recommendation on the shares of M&T Bank Corporation (MTB) on the back of a detailed analysis of its fundamentals, the completion of the of the acquisition of Wilmington Trust Corporation in May, the subsequent partial repay of the TARP dues and the current economic environment. M&T’s first quarter operating earnings of $1.67 per share exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.41. Earnings significantly expanded from $1.23 earned in the prior-year quarter, aided by an increase in the net interest income on the back of net interest margin expansion coupled with substantially lower provision for credit losses. Going forward, we believe that the strategic acquisitions should help to augment earnings. The acquisitions of Provident and Bradford in the Mid-Atlantic region have proved to be meaningful, both in

The Federal Reserve requires more banks to submit their capital plans annually to prove their financial ability to confront another recession. The Federal Reserve will also hold the right to ban capital deployment activities of unsuccessful banks. This is part of Federal Reserve’s effort to closely monitor capital ratios of banks and identify systematic risk in advance in order to avoid recurrence of the latest federal bailout program. According to a proposal on Friday, the Federal Reserve said that it will extend its existing list of 19 big banks that are subject to the capital assessment scheme to 35. The Fed expects the proposal to be finalized later this year and the capital review for these banks will be compulsory by 2012. According to the ruling by the Federal Reserve,

However, earnings saw a striking year-over-year improvement from a loss of 46 cents. The year-over-year improvement in the results reflected the increase in non-interest income and net interest margin, partially offset by higher non-interest expenses and lower net interest income. Furthermore, a significant improvement in credit quality also acted as a positive catalyst. Net income attributed to common shareholders of Comerica totaled $102 million compared with a net loss of $71 million in the first quarter of 2010 and net income of $95 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. This is part of the company’s expansion plan in California that it had announced in its Investors’ Day presentation in February, where the company had announced the opening of 525 to 700 branches in California over the next five years. Of the 100 new branches, JPMorgan stated that nearly 65 will be in Southern California (Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego counties), about 20 in Northern California (San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Delta) and remaining 15 will be in Central California (Kern, Tulare, Fresno and Madera counties).
Fitch Ratings has placed the ratings of a number of major banks under review for possible downgrade following a new rule proposed by the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Recently, the board of directors of FDIC has voted to approve the rule that details the way it would recognize the “systemically important” banks and financial companies under the new Dodd-Frank financial reform law.
We have reaffirmed our Neutral recommendation on the shares of Comerica Inc. (CMA) following the company’s earnings release, quarterly filing and the regulatory moves. The reaffirmation is based on the company’s fundamentals, growth opportunities, credit environment and challenges in a post regulatory environment. Comerica has turned to profit in the second quarter of 2010 after reporting losses for several quarters. The company’s results also outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Credit metrics improved during the quarter, with significant declines in net charge-offs and provision for loan losses. The company also reported an increase in interest margin in the quarter. Comerica focuses on expanding its foothold in the Western and Sun Belt markets, opening banking centers in Orange County, Los Angeles, the San Francisco area, southern Florida and northern Texas. In October 2008, Wells Fargo received $25 billion from the bailout fund, which it paid back in December 2009. The Treasury will auction 11.48 million warrants of Comerica on Thursday. The minimum bid price is set at $15 per warrant. This move will completely free Comerica from government intervention.
Regional bank Comerica Inc. (CMA) said on Wednesday that it has repaid the entire $2.25 billion of bailout money it received from the government for its participation in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) at the height of the credit crisis. In addition to the principal amount of TARP money, Comerica paid a total of $150.9 million in dividends on the preferred stock it issued to the Treasury in Nov 2008. The repayment of TARP money followed Comerica’s completion of an $880 million common stock offering earlier this month. Comerica funded the repayment with a combination of cash from its corporate fund and sale of common stock. We think the immediate outflow of about $1.37 billion from Comerica’s corporate fund to repay TARP will significantly stretch its liquidity in the

The U.S. Treasury said on Monday that new loans at nine major banks, which received significant government aid through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) during the height of the financial crisis and have not repaid yet, tumbled in Jan 2010. In its monthly survey of lending on the TARP banks, the Treasury found that new loan originations at these nine banks fell about 35% from Dec 2009 to $35.9 billion in Jan 2010. The amount was even lower than $41.6 billion of loan originations in October when new loans had fallen last. According to the Treasury, the drop in loan originations in January could partially be a result of large increases in originations during November and December of 2009. The nine major banks that are under survey by the

Comerica Inc. (CMA) posted fourth-quarter results before the opening bell today. The company reported a net loss of $62 million, or 41 cents per share, compared to a net income of $3 million, or 2 cents per share in the year-ago period. However, the quarterly results came in ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a 50-cent-per-share loss. Fully taxable equivalent net interest income increased 2.8% sequentially to $396 million. The increase was primarily driven by a 26 basis points improvement in net interest margin to 2.94%, partially offset by a reduction in total earning assets by 6.2% to $53.9 billion. Provisions for loan losses decreased by 17.4% sequentially to $257 million, while the net charge-off ratio dipped by 4 basis points (bps) to 2.10%. Comerica’s non-interest income declined 32.1% sequentially

Comerica Inc. (CMA) reported third quarter 2009 net loss applicable to common shareholders of $15.0 million or 10 cents per share compared to a net loss of $16.0 million or 10 cents per share in the prior quarter and a net income of $28.0 million or 19 cents per share in the prior-year quarter. Results were substantially ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimated loss of 41 cents. Continued growth in average core deposits, non-interest income and reduced non-interest expenses were impressive during the quarter. However, an 88.5% year-over-year increase in provision for loan losses and $34.0 million of preferred dividend payment to the U.S. Treasury Department under the Capital Purchase Program were the primary reasons for the loss. As a result of better-than-expected top line and marginal enhancement of costs,
