There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics Corporation (GD), has received an order for the production of 6,250 Rifleman and 100 Manpack radios from the U.S. Department of Defense. The Low Rate Initial Production (‘LRIP’) order has an initial value of approximately $56.4 million. The order calls for the production of Joint Tactical Radio System (‘JTRS’) Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit (‘HMS’) Rifleman radio (‘AN/PRC-154’) and Manpack (‘AN/PRC-155’) radio. The JTRS HMS networking radios are the first ground-domain radios that will be fielded by the U.S. military. These meet the full suite of JTRS requirements. JTRS HMS Rifleman radios have gap-filling capabilities that enable soldiers on the battlefield to have secure, mobile voice, video and data communications. The two-channel Manpack radio bridges Rifleman Networks to both legacy

Rockwell Collins Inc. (COL) said it has decided upon selling its Rollmet product line to Precision Castparts Corp. (PCP). The company’s decision to sell the Rollmet business stems from its inclination to have a better focus on the core markets, leading to stronger growth. The Rollmet business provides seamless alloy and stainless steel pipes and propulsion system components for the energy, petrochemical and defense industries. The company expects the sale to close in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, pending customary closing conditions. Separately, Rockwell Collins announced that it expects to release its fiscal third quarter 2011 results on Friday, July 22, 2011. In second quarter 2011,

GRID-LOCK flight controls reduce life cycle costs of the fighters, as it is lighter and more damage-tolerant than traditional honeycomb flight control structures. The GRID-LOCK components produced by Goodrich are more durable and corrosion-resistant than the traditional honeycomb fight controls, as GRID-LOCK technology joins machined structural components to make strong, lightweight parts out of a few interlocking pieces. Goodrich will provide 10 different GRID-LOCK components, which will be retrofitted in more than 150 F-15 fighters of the RSAF fleet.
