Despite sluggish recovery in the economy, Coach, Inc. (COH), the designer and marketer of fine accessories and gifts, recently posted better-than-expected third-quarter 2012 results on the back of healthy sales in North America and China. Strong brand image, geographical expansion, and new pricing and promotional policies in North American factory business were also the factor behind the growth. The quarterly earnings of 77 cents a share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a couple of cents, and increased 24% from 62 cents earned in the prior-year quarter buoyed by strong top-line growth. The New York based company, Coach, said that net sales for the quarter came in at $1,109 million, up 16.6% from the year-ago quarter, and came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,101 million.
Following a mixed third quarter 2012 from one of the leading designer, marketer and distributor of premium lifestyle products, Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation (RL), we retain our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock. In the third quarter, Polo’s earnings per share of $1.78 reflected a 3% growth from $1.72 earned in the year-ago period. Quarterly earnings also surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.67 per share. The earnings beat in the quarter reflected a decline in shares outstanding as against last year. Polo Ralph Lauren’s net revenues climbed 16.6% year over year to $1,805.6 million in the quarter, which however fell short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,768.0 million. Solid quarterly performance prompted management to lift its revenue growth guidance for fiscal 2012 to 20%, instead of the high-teen

The National Retail Federation (“NRF”), an industry trade group, projects a 2.8% growth in sales, amounting to $465.6 billion, during the current November to December holiday season, lower than the 5.2% rise in the corresponding period of the previous year. Online retail may increase 15% to touch $37.6 billion. These estimates reveal a rebound in consumer expenditure, which amounts to about 70% of the U.S. economy. Brick-and-mortar retailers ran extended hours post Thanksgiving in order to snatch some business from Internet retailers who continue to grow at a brisk pace. The growth trajectory of online sellers remains intact despite huge destruction of consumer wealth during the financial crisis in 2008 and tepid recovery since then. On the other hand, retail icons for middle-class shoppers, J. C. Penney Company (JCP) and

One of the most amazing aspects of this economic recovery has been the resiliency of the American consumer. Given a banking/housing/credit crisis that nearly melted down the economy, you would have thought that high-end luxury retailers like Tiffany & Co. (TIF) and Coach (COH) and upper-tier department stores like Nordstrom (JWN) and Macy’s (M) would have suffered the most. To the contrary, these were terrific investments as their earnings continued to surprise quarter after quarter. The consumer was not hunkering down in Wal-Mart (WMT) or Kohl’s (KSS). She was out shopping like nobody’s business. More on that surprising trend of the past two years in a moment. Now Comes the Recession? Well, the high-end may still do well, but it finally happened. Fears of a double-dip drove both shoppers and

Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.

Online retail giant Amazon (AMZN) reports after the markets close today. Ford sped past earnings and revenue expectations, with quarterely results the best in more than 10 years. The company’s strategy to sell products at heavily discounted prices has helped it to remain on a positive growth track amid beleaguered economic conditions as cash-strapped customers continue to reckon Costco as a viable option for low-cost necessities. Having delivered consistent comparable-store sales growth, Costco is well positioned in the warehouse club industry. A differentiated product range enables Costco to provide an upscale shopping experience for its members, resulting in market share gains and higher sales per square foot. Moreover, the company continues to maintain a healthy membership renewal rate. We are also encouraged by the company’s expansion strategy.
Tony Daltorio, Investment U Research According to the World Bank, the global middle class could grow to 1.15 billion in 2030 – a huge jump from the 430 million middle class folks in 2000. Driving the extraordinary growth is… you guessed it, the emerging “BRIC” nations. In 2000, developing countries like China, Brazil and India accounted for 56% of that number. But by 2030, analysts expect it to climb as high as 93%… with China alone accounting for 52% of the expected increase. This represents a tremendous amount of wealth.
Amid a weak retail environment, Coach, Inc. (COH), the designer and marketer of fine accessories and gifts, recently reported first-quarter 2010 results that topped expectations. Coach’s quarterly earnings of 44 cents a share surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 39 cents, but remained flat compared to the prior-year quarter. The better-than-expected result was buoyed by the successful launch of the Poppy collection, which includes a new line of handbags, footwear, watches and other accessories at a comparatively low price. Total net sales showed a marginal increase of 1.2% year-on-year to $761.4 million, driven by an 8.0% gain achieved at North American stores and strong growth in the China business with a double-digit rate increase in comparable-store sales. Comps at North American stores fell 1.1%, a sharp improvement from a 6.1%

Most Asian stock declined Wednesday amid lingering concerns about the health of the global financial system. U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner’s comments yesterday that the vast majority of U.S. banks are well capitalized failed to lift sentiments in Asia. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 407.44 points, or 2.7%, to 14,878.45, while Shanghai’s benchmark fell 74.48 points, or 2.9%, to 2,461.35 – registering its steepest one-day drop in two weeks. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 stock average edged up 15.97 points, or 0.2%, to 8,727.30, while South Korea’s Kospi added 1.4% to 1,356.02. Encouraging comments from Geithner yesterday pushed U.S. equity markets higher. The Treasury Secretary’s testimony on the Hill came amid a plethora of conflicting data, uncertain forecasts, and shifting political winds. Financials once again led the gainers, reversing Monday’s tumble, as a

What’s most interesting though, is the fact

The Olympic Games kicked off at 8:08:08 pm on Friday night, the eighth day of the eighth month of 2008. Coincidence? Not at all. The number eight is considered lucky by the Chinese, because in Cantonese (the language of South China) the word for prosperity is “fa”, which sounds like “ba” (eight). Let the gains begin. Fortune also smiled upon stock markets, with the S&P 500 Index scoring its first back-to-back weekly gain since April as the US dollar rallied strongly and oil and commodities plummeted. The S&P 500’s gain since the low of July 15 has been 6.7%, with the Financial SPDR up by 27.8%. Hat tip: Phil’s Stock World As expected, the Federal Open Market Committee held the Fed funds target rate steady at 2.0%. This is the
