OUTLOOK Crude Oil Signs of progress in resolving Europe’s long-running sovereign debt crisis and a tightening global supply picture in view of the geopolitical fallout over Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions have been keeping oil prices at elevated levels. Partly offsetting this favorable view has been high U.S. crude stocks and worries about China’s growth outlook. As such, crude oil’s near-term fundamentals remain mixed, to say the least. The long-term outlook for oil, however, remains favorable given the commodity’s constrained supply picture. In particular, while the Western economies exhibit sluggish growth prospects, global oil consumption is expected to get a boost from continued strength in the major emerging powers like India, China and Brazil that continue to grow at a healthy rate. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which provides

Furthermore, the capital infusion of over $200 million bodes well for Cabot, which will help it to bolster its natural gas operations. Buoyed by the growth momentum from the company s drilling efforts, particularly in its North region, Cabot recently reported robust third-quarter results. A relatively low risk profile and longer reserve lives are other positives in the Cabot story. Considering these factors, we believe Cabot is well positioned going forward and consider it an attractive investment. Zacks Investment Research

OUTLOOK Crude Oil Mounting worries about Europe’s debt crisis, a persistently weak U.S. jobs market and less-than-encouraging guidance from the Federal Reserve have been weighing on investor sentiment, weakening oil prices to around $85 a barrel. Apprehensions about high U.S. crude stocks, the release of emergency oil supplies from government-held strategic reserves into the world market, and uncertainty over oil supply disruptions in the Middle East have added to the negative sentiment. These issues have stoked fears about the demand outlook for oil that has seen the commodity’s price plummet to 12-month lows earlier in the month. Incidentally, crude prices zoomed past the $110 per barrel level during the first half of the year.
Attentive investors may have noted an announcement last week by the large South Africa-based energy and chemicals company Sasol (SSL). The firm said it was commencing an eighteen-month feasibility study to determine the commercial viability of one of two options: either a two million tons per annum or four million tons per annum Gas-to-Liquids, or ‘GTL,’ production facility in southwestern Louisiana. This would be the first GTL facility in the United States, indeed in the Western hemisphere. The liquids produced are expected to be generally kerosene and allied products, for diesel or jet fuel. This could be the start of a major movement to, effectively, substitute abundant, cheap natural gas produced within North America, for expensive, imported crude oil. The economic, balance of payments, financial and investment implications are enormous.

An independent oil and gas company Forest Oil Corporation (FST) provided guidance for the second quarter as well as second half of 2011. The company’s forecasts are mainly reflective of the more oil-weighted development initiatives through the expansion of its Eagle Ford Shale drilling program and the commencement of drilling activity in the Wolfcamp Shale oil play. For the second quarter of 2011, Forest Oil expects net sales volumes to average between 333 million and 337 million cubic feet equivalent per day (MMcfe/d), which exclude its Canadian operations held by Lone Pine Resources Inc. Second quarter production experienced a 7 MMcfe/d downtime in Texas Panhandle and South Louisiana. Additionally, the divestiture of the Wilson County also restricted production. The company projected exploration and development capital expenditures to range between $190

We are reiterating our Neutral recommendation on Denver-based Forest Oil Corporation (FST). An independent oil and gas company engaged in the acquisition, exploration, production and development of hydrocarbon properties in North America is expected to witness margin expansion going forward owing to its exploration activities. However, its reduced 2011 production volume keeps us skeptical for the time being. In order to maximize its margins, Forest Oil remains proactive in expanding its liquid-rich acreage position. It added 82,000 acres of liquid-rich prospects during the first quarter. Management also intends to deploy more funds at its liquids-rich Granite Wash assets in Texas Panhandle, Deep Basin gas assets and Peace River Arch light-oil assets in Canada. The company plans to apportion approximately 80% of its capital expenditure to liquids-rich prospects, mainly in the

(COG) shares to Outperform from Neutral, reflecting the company’s impressive exposure to the high-return Marcellus and Haynesville Shale plays, as well as its above-average production growth. Furthermore, the capital infusion of over $200 million bodes well for Cabot, which will help the company bolster its natural gas operations. Buoyed by the growth momentum from the company’s drilling efforts, particularly in its North region, Cabot recently reported better-than-expected first-quarter results. A relatively low-risk profile and longer reserve lives are other positives in the Cabot story. Considering these factors, we believe Cabot is well positioned going forward and consider it an attractive investment. In essence, this is not a retail market driven by reactionary extremes of emotion as much as it is a battle of titans who use either arsenals of supply/demand data or algorithmic trading firepower, or both, to move the price. Despite the occasional fear spike due to Middle East tensions, or covert price manipulation at physical market delivery hubs (as is being investigated regarding the 2008 price highs above $140), the pros aren’t scrambling to buy tops and sell bottoms because they

However, apprehensions about soaring U.S. crude stocks – currently at their highest level in two years –- and worries that China’s tightening monetary policy in response to inflationary pressures may bring down its growth momentum, have been weighing on investor sentiment, weakening oil prices to less than $100 a barrel. But far too many factors weigh on oil prices – from OPEC decisions and geostrategic tensions to the value of the U.S. dollar and seasonal variables – to definitively size up each one

With shares gaining by approximately 8% on Monday, Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (COG) begins the week as one of the top-performing Zacks #1 Rank companies. COG is certainly gaining a good deal of ground today thanks to the big news that Exxon Mobil (XOM) is buying XTO Energy (XTO). Exxon’s acquisition today is seen on the Street as a bet on natural gas from one of the biggest and most respected figures in the energy industry. Natural gas is cleaner and easier to reach than other alternatives, and many see it as an important step forward for an industry in search of alternatives. Now, other natural gas companies are likely to be courted by the major oil juggernauts. There’s not doubt COG is benefiting from this attention today, but

The federal government’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a bigger-than-expected decline in natural gas supplies. Stockpiles held in underground storage in the lower 48 states fell by 64 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ended December 4. The large inventory decline came as frigid temperatures throughout the country finally started to erode record-high storage amounts. This takes the current storage level to 3.77 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), which is still up 14.3% from last year’s level and 15.7% above the five-year range (as clear from the nearby chart from the EIA). Current stocks are 472 Bcf above last year’s level and 513 Bcf above the five-year average. Despite exceeding market expectations, the inventory withdrawal (that came about two or three weeks behind schedule) was lower than the five-year-average drawdown

We are upgrading Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (COG) shares to Outperform from Neutral, reflecting the company’s impressive exposure to the high-return Marcellus and Haynesville Shale plays, as well as its above-average production growth. Additionally, the current turnaround in natural gas prices bodes well for Cabot, which derives approximately 86% of its operating revenues from the commodity. Buoyed by the growth momentum from the company’s drilling efforts, particularly in its North region, Cabot recently reported better-than-expected third-quarter results. Cabot’s large acreage holdings will support several years of oil and gas drilling in fast-growing fields Incorporatedluding Marcellus Shale in Appalachia and Haynesville Shale in east Texas. We believe that the company’s recent operations restructuring and the sale of Canadian assets will further help it to focus on core shale plays. A

Yesterday, independent energy exploration and production (E&P) company Cabot Oil and Gas (COG) reported better-than-expected third-quarter results, mainly driven by increased gas production in its North region. Earnings per share, excluding non-recurring items, came in at 41 cents, outperforming the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 37 cents. However, on a year-over-year basis, Cabot’s adjusted earnings per share declined 29.3% (from 58 cents to 41 cents), while revenue was down 15.4% to $207.0 million. The decline from the year-ago quarter can be attributed to lower commodity price realizations. Volume Growth Continues Overall production volumes during the quarter were 25.5 billion cubic feet equivalent (Bcfe), up more than 5% from the previous-year period. Natural gas volumes were up 5.2% year-over-year to 24.2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) and liquids volumes were up 11.6% to
