Recently, Merge Healthcare (MRGE) showcased its new cloud-based platform ‘Merge Honeycomb’ along with its first application in the cloud, namely ‘free image sharing’ at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). This application enables users to upload, download, view and share medical images everywhere without the help of any additional software. Through this new solution the company intends to improve image interoperability and achieve the ‘Meaningful Use’ stamp from the federal government. Earlier this month, Merge selected Dell, Inc (DELL) as its preferred cloud computing services provider. The company expects to launch “Merge Honeycomb” in the first quarter of 2012, which led to a 17.5% increase in the stock price to $5.18 on Monday. Presently, Merge boasts the largest image sharing network opportunity with 6,000 clinics across the US, This

Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) reported third-quarter 2011 loss (including stock-based compensation expense but excluding other special items) of 67 cents per share, which was narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 70 cents due to a slightly better-than-expected performance of its prostate cancer vaccine Provenge in the quarter. Loss was, however, much wider than the year-ago loss of 54 cents per share. Quarterly Details Total revenue in the reported quarter climbed to $64.3 million (including rebates and charge-backs) from $20.2 million in the comparable quarter of 2010. The jump was attributable to the higher Provenge revenue in the current quarter versus low Provenge sales in the third quarter of 2010 as it was only the second quarter of its launch. Revenues were also above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $63 million.

As a result, the stock price of the company closed 6.58% lower on Thursday. According to the agency, it received a formal national coverage determination (NCD) request from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Edwards, a leading player in the field of heart valves and hemodynamic monitoring, issued a statement regarding the matter. The company was aware that CMS was considering initiating an NCA to decide on the reimbursement status of Sapien transcatheter heart valve (THV).
We have maintained a Neutral rating on Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) with a target price of $13 per share after appraisal of the second quarter 2011 results. Dendreon Corporation reported weaker-than-expected second quarter 2011 sales of $49.6 million of its potential blockbuster prostate cancer vaccine Provenge, though up from prior quarters. Revenues also disappointed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $59 million in the second quarter. Management surmised that though the physician interest in the vaccine remains solid, its uptake will be slow and gradual. Subsequently, the company withdrew its revenue guidance for the drug, sending its share price down sharply. Provenge is the first product in a new therapeutic class known as “active cellular immunotherapies.” We believe that Provenge is capable of changing the paradigm of cancer care dramatically. Most recently, the company announced that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has agreed to fully reimburse Provenge, an expensive vaccine. CMS is a federal agency that administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which provide health care coverage to millions of people in the US. The agency has issued a final National Coverage Decision (NCD) for Provenge which will require Medicare contractors to cover the use of Provenge for treatment of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate resistant (hormone refractory) prostate cancer which is consistent with its label. These facilities will be brought online in a staged manner. Earlier, in March 2011, Dendreon’s New Jersey facility received FDA clearance. The facility has 48 workstations, some of which are already operational. The LA and NJ facilities, geared for manufacturing Provenge, now total 84. We believe the expanding manufacturing capacity will significantly increase the availability of Provenge which will help Dendreon to meet pent up demand for the vaccine.
Aetna Inc. (AET) has recently revealed that it has finally got green signal from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), to market its Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan products. In April 2010, the company was banned from offering these products to new members as some of the Medicare prescription drug plans offered between 2009 and 2010 had failed to comply with the regulatory requirements. Aetna’s Medicare products are regulated by the CMS. In April last year, the CMS had granted the company a limited waiver of these sanctions to allow it to continue enrolling eligible members into existing, contracted group Aetna Medicare Advantage Plans and Standalone PDPs through March 31, 2011. Consequently, the company’s 2011 Medicare membership was adversely affected because it did not participate in the 2010

With the 10-year T-note yielding only 3.21%, investors interested in getting income from their investments are in sort of a tough place. Dividend-paying stocks are a very good place to look for a replacement. One thing you know for sure is that the coupon payment on a 10-year note is not going to rise. A yield of 3.21% does not offer much of a cushion against inflation. What is inflation likely to average over the next 10 years? I have no idea, but based on the spread between the regular 10-year note, and the 10-year TIPS, the market is implicitly expecting a rate of about 2.50%, which is pretty much in line with the historical experience (headline CPI) over the last 20 years of 2.57%. Earnings in the quarter were also lower than $1.38 per share reported in the year-ago period. Provenge was approved in the US in April last year and is marketed since May 2010. It is currently reimbursed by all 15 local Medicare contractors. CMS issued the proposed decision memo for Dendreon’s potential blockbuster vaccine, Provenge, after conducting a scientific review of the evidence provided. The agency believes there is enough evidence to justify reimbursement for the approved label of the vaccine. CMS believes Provenge leads to improvement in health outcomes for men with advanced, castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and is clinically necessary, as per CMS.
Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. (HE) announced fourth-quarter 2010 operating earnings of 26 cents per share, missing both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and the year-ago earnings of 35 cents. The decline in earnings is attributed to weather-driven declines in utility sales. Fiscal 2010 operating earnings came in at $1.21 per share, below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.33. However, this was above fiscal 2009 earnings of $1.12 per share. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track.
