Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) entered a new network-sharing deal with Clearwire Corporation (CLWR). The new deal, worth $1.6 billion, is an extension of the existing one that was to expire by the end of next year. Sprint buys WiMax wireless capacity from Clearwire and then resells services to its own customers. As per the terms of the new deal, Sprint, which owns a hefty 54% stake in Clearwire, would pay $926 million to use the unlimited WiMax network of the latter for its 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services over the next two years (i.e. 2012 and 2013). This marks a milestone move in the company’s Network Vision strategy, which serves as a major catalyst in its growth plan. Under the Network Vision strategy announced last year, Sprint will consolidate multiple incompatible networks (CDMA and iDEN) into one platform, supporting multiple technologies (3G and 4G) and spectrum bands (800 MHz, 1.9 GHz, 1.6 GHz and 2.5 GHz). The company expects the full Network Vision deployment to be over by year-end 2013. Moreover, Sprint Nextel would terminate its iDEN network in mid-2013. Further, the company is replacing its iDEN network on CDMA-based phones with a new version of Nextel’s “push-to-talk” feature from Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM).
The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) has announced that it will offer Fourth Generation (4G) Enterprise Wide Area Network (WAN) to its corporate customers. The 4G Enterprise WAN is a fixed wireless access that promises faster, better and secure service on the Sprint Global Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. The service addresses significant issues related to enterprise communication like network security, reliability, higher bandwidth, cost effectiveness and flexible deployment. Consequently, Sprint 4G Enterprise WAN substitutes traditional wireline networks to far-flung areas where the installation of traditional wireline is cumbersome.
Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) has finally struck the much talked about deal with LightSquared Inc., as reported by Bloomberg. The 15-year deal, worth $20 billion, will be a big help in Sprint’s deployment of high-speed 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless networks. Currently, Sprint’s 4G services rely on a wholesale agreement with Clearwire Corp. (CLWR). The company owns a 49.9% stake in Clearwire and offers speedy data services to customers via 4G WiMax (a wireless broadband technology) in collaboration with the latter. Sprint’s 4G services covered 71 U.S. markets and reached 120 million people at year-end 2010. The coverage is likely to touch 130 million by the end of 2011. The LightSquared deal would provide a new source of revenue for Sprint as it would provide the latter with a new

Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, is slated to release its first quarter 2011 earnings on April 28 before the market opens. The current Zacks Consensus Estimate for the first quarter is net loss of 21 cents, representing a decline of 25.32% from the year-ago level. Sprint had average positive surprises of 6.96% in the last four quarters of 2010. We expect the first quarter to show a little positive surprise as Sprint is seeing an uptick in its post-paid wireless business. Sprint is expected to benefit from increased penetration of smartphones, rising average revenue per user (ARPU) and lower churn in the post-paid wireless segment. However, we believe Sprint’s business has been depressed since the proposed merger of AT&T Inc. (T) and Deutsche Telekom’s unit T-Mobile

Sprint Nextel (S), the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, intends to complete the deployment of long-term evolution (LTE) technology based fourth generation (4G) network in its entire coverage by year-end 2013. Sprint is a trailblazer in 4G having leapfrogged over its larger U.S. peers, VerizonCommunication (VZ)and AT&T Inc. (T) by becoming the first carrier to deploy commercial 4G service in Baltimore, back in October 2008. The company’s 4G services cover 71 markets in the U.S. and reached 120 million people at year-end 2010. The company currently runs its third generation (3G) network in the 1900 MHz band, has a wholesale deal with Clearwire Corp. (CLWR) to use WiMAX in the 2.5 GHz band and owns an iDEN network in the 800 MHz band. The deployment of 4G LTE network is a

AT&T Inc. (T), the largest U.S. telecom carrier, declared its fourth quarter and fiscal 2010 earnings before the opening bell. The company reported adjusted earnings of 55 cents per share in the fourth quarter, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. Adjusted earnings climbed 10% from 50 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Strong earnings were driven by revenue growth, record wireless subscriber additions, robust U-verse services sales and gains in IP-based and strategic business services revenues. Adjusted earnings excludes one-time charges of 26 cents from the previously disclosed pension accounting change, 9 cents related to severance costs and a 2 cent charge incurred on asset impairments. Excluding one-time charges, adjusted earnings per share improved 10.6% to $2.29 in fiscal 2010 from $2.07 in 2009. Revenue spiked 2.1%

Sprint Nextel (S), the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, unveiled its third 4G handset “HTC EVO Shift 4G”, which will be available in markets on January 9. The handset is priced at $149.99 after a $100 rebate and carries a two-year contract. The device “HTC EVO Shift 4G” runs on the latest version of Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system. The launch follows the first 4G handset “EVO 4G” in early June 2010 and the second 4G “Samsung Epic 4G” in late June. Both the smartphones are performing well in the U.S. market and is ahead of the iPhone, offered by AT&T Inc. (T) or any other Android device. These smartphones are expected to fuel Sprint’s earnings and margins going forward. Expansion of 4G services is vital to Sprint’ssurvival in the U.S.

AT&T Inc. (T), the second largest mobile service provider in the U.S., plans to expand Wi-Fi hotzones for its wireless network, including iPhones, to major markets. The company will expand its Wi-Fi access around Times Square in New York and introduce its first hotspot in San Francisco. Earlier this year, AT&T deployed Wi-Fi hotzones in New York City’s Times Square, downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, and Chicago’s Wrigleyville to support mobile broadband in urban areas. These zones provide fast data service to AT&T customers. Wi-Fi is gaining popularity as more customers are adopting Wi-Fi enabled devices. It is a cost-effective to wireless broadband over AT&T’s 3G network.
AT&T Inc. (T), the #2 mobile service provider in the U.S., will acquire mobile television spectrum licenses for $1.93 billion from Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM). The spectrum licenses, in the lower 700 MHz frequency band, currently support Qualcomm’s FLO TV subsidiary business, which Qualcomm expects to shut down by March 2011. On the other hand, AT&T is expected to enhance its Long-Term Evolution (LTE), a 4G technology, mobile broadband services through the spectrum licenses and will encounter intense competition over the iPhone. AT&T is the exclusive provider of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone since June 2007. The iPhone gave AT&T more subscribers even when the U.S. mobile-phone market was nearing saturation.
The latest wireless industry buzz is on Sprint Nextel’s (S) imminent danger, with Clearwire Corp. (CLWR) running a risk of defaulting its loan agreements. Sprint Nextel owns a hefty 54% stake in Clearwire and offers speedy data services to customers via 4G WiMax (a wireless broadband technology) network in collaboration with the latter. Nagging losses and uncertainty over raising funds lead to doubts over Clearwire’s ability to continue its operations. Over the past few months, Clearwire has been in negotiations for new funding with new and existing customers including Sprint and T-Mobile, a unit of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGY). Earlier this month, Clearwire stated that it would lay off 15% of its workforce and shrink other costs to conserve cash. We believe Clearwire’s inability to raise funds or operate

We downgrade our recommendation on Amdocs Limited (DOX) to Underperform on the basis of its disappointing financial outlook for the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Profitability will suffer as a result of higher expenses for productivity improvement, emerging market sales opportunity, and suspension of program implementation at Clearwire Corp. (CLWR). We believe bottom-line shrinkage may continue thereafter as the developed economies are still not out of the woods and emerging market opportunities are subject to regulatory and geo-political uncertainties. The company is still facing demand softness in the European regions and also in the North American markets. While the macro economic factors are mostly negative in Europe, Amdocs is facing competitive pressure in North America. These two regions remain near-term concerns. The company has decided to invest in the LightSquared venture, which is trying to become a U.S. wholesale wireless operator specializing in next-generation (4G) LTE network. LightSquared is promoted by the private equity firm Harbinger Capital Partners. In last July, LightSquared announced that it will establish a nationwide LTE network that can be shared by several wireless and cable operators. The service is expected to start in 2010 and targets 92% of the U.S. subscribers under its network by 2015. LightSquared has already awarded an 8-year $7 billion contract to Nokia Siemens Network, a joint venture between Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Siemens AG

Sprint Nextel (S) is arguing whether to let its rival operator, T-Mobile USA, to invest in Clearwire Corp. (CLWR). Sprint is well aware that the investment will give lead to cutthroat competition and may even challenge its leading position in the deployment of 4G services. Sprint offers speedy data services to customers via 4G network in collaboration with Clearwire. The expansion of 4G services is vital to Sprint’s survival in the U.S. wireless market, given its continued market share erosion. Sprint merged its wireless broadband unit with Clearwire in 2008 and currently owns 54% of the stake. Clearwire needs new funding by the end of the year and is in talks with new and existing customers about an expansion of its footprint in the U.S. If T-Mobile, a unit of Germany

by Tony Daltorio, Investment U Research Monday, August 23, 2010 About 30 years ago, VHS and Betamax dueled to rule the video recording technology world. Today, those two technologies never existed for all that many consumers now. Instead, the big technology debate is all about fourth generation mobile phone networks (4G). In the ring this time are Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMax. But it’s already a late round and the winner seems clear. So now it’s only left to be seen how to take advantage… LTE Technology vs. Wimax Most industry insiders don’t see a clear advantage in either LTE’s technology or WiMax’s. Both offer fast data speeds up to 10 megabits per second. WiMax hit the technology market a little earlier than LTE, and charges a bit less

The next-generation (4G) WiMAX network architecture still enjoys commendable growth potential and generates enthusiasm among several global telecom service providers. Recently, WiMAX Forum and the Institute Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), have taken initiatives to accelerate the development of WiMAX technology evaluation. The new advanced WiMAX standard is called as “WiMAX 2″. Through WiMAX, broadband service providers will offer an alternative to cable and digital subscriber lines technology. The technology provides a low-cost, open network system with an all IP mobile Internet solution that enables efficient and scalable networks for voice, data, and video transmission. WiMAX has enormous potential to close the digital gap between competitive urban markets and underserved rural markets. “WiMAX 2″ is designed to attain a peak download speed of 300 Mbps utilizing channel stacking techniques, greater

Tellabs Inc. (TLAB) received a new contract for its SmartCore 9100 ASN Gateway from Clearwire Corp. (CLWR) for the latter’s WiMAX deployment in Spain. Clearwire already used Tellabs’ SmartCore 9100 platform for its ongoing nationwide 4G WiMAX network deployment in the U.S. The company has now decided to expand its presence in Europe. Tellabs introduced its SmartCore 9100 ASN Gateway as a result of its acquisition of WiChorus. We believe the acquisition of WiChorus will be incrementally positive for Tellabs’ long-run growth. WiChorus’ state-of-the-art SmartCore platform is a leading mobile packet core solution that has been developed for the next-generation (4G) WiMAX and LTE technology together with support for 3G.
