As oil from the destroyed rig in the Gulf of Mexico continues to spill into the water, creating an oil slick the size of Delaware, there’s no doubt that the damages are going to be extremely high – both financially and environmentally. British Petroleum (NYSE: BP), who leased the rig that exploded, has stated that the cleanup efforts are costing $6 million per day. Estimates for the total cost of the cleanup have ranged from $1 billion to $7 billion. And the cost to the fishing industry could be as much as $2.5 billion. Florida tourism could suffer to the tune of $3 billion. Eventually, the companies responsible for the disaster and their insurance companies will pay the price, too. While BP has said it will pay all cleanup costs

For that matter, China did a lot of pointing right back at the U.S. Both seemed bound and determined to blame the other for the summit’s failure. But while the Obama administration talks a good talk about green technology, China actually does something about it. A recent Bloomberg New Energy Finance report shows China spent $34.6 billion on renewable energy in 2009. That works out to over $94.7 million per day, nearly twice what the U.S. did. More over, Bloomberg didn’t include government spending in that story. It covered private investment in renewable energy projects. And it detailed money raised in stock offerings, venture capital and private equity deals by companies within

Instead of lighting up living rooms across America, the trusty incandescent light bulb will have a new home in the Smithsonian. Right next to Alexander Graham Bell’s original telephone and Marconi’s radio. After December 31, 2011, the federal ban on the 100-watt incandescent light bulb will take effect. Two years after that, the 60-watt and 40-watt versions will disappear from stores, too. And the remarkable thing? A massive 82% of Americans are totally unaware that this will happen. So what’s the deal here? In short, it’s all about energy efficiency… Thanks, For The Light Bulbs Edison… But We Need to Do Better When it comes to the energy sector – specifically, increasing our

Investors like to gravitate to investment themes because they are easy to understand, tend to last for longer than a few months, and can deliver solid returns. Longer-term investment themes could range from aging of the population, converting to clean energy, or using mobile communications devices. The key is to identify a trend, outline an investment theme for that trend, and then look for companies that are profiting from that trend. One trend that stick out is the increased use of mobile devices for more than just talking. Everywhere you look people are texting, instant messaging, and surfing the web on their cell phones, smart phones, net books, and laptops. This trend toward mobile communications will continue to become a bigger part of people’s lives as more people want to
