The impact of a series of natural disasters in 2011 and the ongoing economic uncertainty is still quite palpable in the performance of U.S. insurers. These impediments aside, there are fundamental challenges that are expected to come in the way insurers’ efforts to meet growing investor expectations in the upcoming quarters. Among the possible way outs of such difficulties, rising rates and pricing flexibility are primary. The overall health of the U.S. insurance industry has improved to some extent in the recent quarters, after enduring pricing pressures and reduced insured exposure for quite some time. The market turmoil resulting from the Great Recession forced many companies to take immense write-downs, but those memories are fast becoming a thing of the past. That said, continued soft market conditions, shrinking businesses, a

As a part of its annual rating review, rating agency A.M. Best declared its rating action on Cincinnati Financial Corp. (CINF) and its operating subsidiaries. The agency has downgraded the issuer credit rating (“ICR”) as well as the debt rating of Cincinnati Financial by one notch to “a-“ from “a”. It also downgraded the issuer credit rating of the Cincinnati Insurance Companies (“CIC”) to “aa-“ from “aa” while affirming the financial strength rating (“FSR”) of “A+”. A.M.Best made a downward revision of the ICR of CIC on account of the weak operating results posted by the company over the recent years. CIC’s geographic concentration ties its performance to business, economic, environmental and regulatory conditions in certain states. Though the company markets its property casualty insurance products in 39 states, its

Results also contrasted unfavorably with the prior-year quarter’s earnings of 65 cents. Lower-than-expected results came on the back of a huge catastrophe charge of $39.1 million (after-tax), partly mitigated by higher revenues and a lower share count due to share buybacks. The New York-based company posted total revenue of $455.2 million, higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $421 million and also up 7.5% year over year, reflecting an increase in premiums written, higher net investment income, partially offset by lower net realized investment gains, and commission and fee income. Gross premiums written increased 16% year over year

Cincinnati Financial Corp. (CINF) has reported third quarter 2011 operating earnings of 13 cents per share, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate, but down 62% year over year. Year-over-year earnings declined due to high catastrophe incidence during the quarter. Revenue for the quarter stood at $944, down 12% year over year. After-tax investment income upped a modest 1.0% year over year to $98 million. This growth was driven largely by dividend-paying stocks in the investment portfolio, partly mitigated by the current low-interest rate environment. Total benefits and expenses increased 9.8% year over year to $933 million led by higher insurance losses and underwriting expense. Segment Results The Commercial Lines Insurance segment recorded earned premium of $557 million, up 2% from the prior-year quarter, reflecting growth in both renewal and

We are maintaining our Underperform rating on Cincinnati Financial Corp. (CINF), as we believe that a weak economy, low investment yield and bad weather will weaken its return on equity. Cincinnati Financial recently predicted cat losses of $88-98 million after suffering a weather-related loss of $290 million in the second quarter, which led to an operating loss of 57 cents per share. Top-line growth at Cincinnati Financial has been sluggish for the past several years due to weak markets and economic pressures. The lingering effects of soft insurance market pricing are expected to impact growth rates and earned premium levels in 2011 and possibly beyond, depending on insurance market conditions. These conditions continue to weaken loss ratios and hamper near-term profitability. Commercial Lines, which accounted for 73% of 2010 net

The second quarter also suffered due to catastrophe losses, resulting from tornado activity in the United States in April and May. Montpelier’s second quarter operating earnings of 8 cents per share were much lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate largely due to catastrophe losses, lower investment income and higher operating expenses.
Yesterday, property and casualty insurer Cincinnati Financial Corp. (CINF) declared a preliminary pre-tax catastrophe loss (cat loss) estimate of about $88–$98 million, which will be reflected in its third quarter 2011 results. The losses mainly emanated from Hurricane Irene and other catastrophes. The Cincinnati, Ohio-based company stated that catastrophes affected its loss ratio by an average of 4.9 % for the third quarter and 4.4% on a full-year basis over the past decade. However, the impact of the recent catastrophe on the third quarter loss ratio will be approximately 11.5% to 12.5%, significantly higher than the historical average. In the previous quarter, Cincinnati incurred huge storm losses of $290 million and reported an operating loss of 57 cents per share, which was, however, narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of

We downgraded our recommendation on Cincinnati Financial (CINF) following the wider-than-expected operating loss reported by the company in second quarter 2011 owing to huge cat losses. Moreover, the Commercial Lines segment will remain somewhat weak due to the sluggish economy, although the decline in business is moderating. The company is expected to face limited investment growth due to continued low yields for investment options. We expect pressure on top line until the soft insurance market cycle turns completely. Our six-month target price of $25.00 equates to about 42.4x our earnings estimate for 2011. We view the $1.60 per common share annual dividend as secure, implying a negative return of about 4.7% over that period. This is consistent with our Underperform recommendation on the shares.
Income-oriented investors have yet another reason to be upset with the bond markets. Junk bond yields fell to a record low a few days ago and are staying near those levels. As of Wednesday evening, the Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield index yielded a mere 6.68%, which isn’t much when you consider the risk of default. These low yields are just one sign of the bond market’s cheery mood. Corporations are finding plenty of buyers for their debt, and many offerings have been completed this week. Among the investment-grade companies selling bonds are Google (GOOG), Norfolk Southern (NSC) and Walt Disney (DIS). Included in this week’s near-record level of junk bond offerings is beleaguered Chrysler, which is refinancing its loan package. Taking advantage of the low interest rates is good

Cincinnati Financial’s (CINF) first quarter earnings disappointed the Zacks Consensus Estimate, primarily due to lower-than-expected earned premium. Its Commercial Lines segment prime premium contributor has been suffering from soft market conditions, exerting downward pressure on pricing and restricting growth. Not much improvement is expected here in 2010. However, its Personal Lines segment is expected to clock modest positive growth. Then again, we remain cautious on the investment portfolio with an above-average equity concentration. Our six-month target price of $24.00 equates to about 14.8X our earnings estimate for 2010. We view $1.58 per common share annual dividend as secure, implying a negative return of about 6.9%. Zacks Investment Research

Cincinnati Financial’s (CINF) fourth quarter net income of 53 cents per share was a penny ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 52 cents. Results lagged the prior year’s earning of 57 cents. Earnings for the reported quarter dragged due to lower premiums from property-casualty and commercial lines, partially offset by a higher net investment income. Investment portfolio repositioning led to a 4.7% increase in investment income to $131 million. This also helped to boost total revenues, which increased 11.3% year-over-year to $1.1 billion, though partially offset by a 3.6% year-over-year decline in earned premiums to $752 million. Segment Results Pricing declines and economically driven lower insured exposure levels such as business sales or payroll volume led to an 8.8% year-over-year decline in premium to $478 million in Commercial Insurance
