Invest in the shortage that currently exists – LNG tankers – which will only be exasperated if the United States starts exporting. There’s a great, strange story by F. Scott Fitzgerald called, The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. In it, the Washington family has discovered a mountain that’s made entirely of diamond in an uncharted part of Montana. It’s just one giant, mountain-sized chunk. The tale deals with greed and the basics of the law of supply. But the Washingtons can’t let anyone know their diamond mountain exists… If people found out, it’d collapse the diamond market, making the precious stone worthless. And the Washingtons themselves would be cast into poverty. So, it’s this strange dual existence for the Washingtons. They’re the wealthiest family in the world, but only

Statoil ASA (STO) along with its partner ExxonMobil Corporation (XOM) has found indications of natural gas in the Zafarani-1 well in Block 2 offshore Tanzania. The well, located about 80 kilometers off mainland Tanzania is considered to be of superior quality. Spud in early January, drilling activities of the well are likely to be over within three months. The drillship Ocean Rig Poseidon is being used to drill the well, which is the first exploration in the license spanning approximately 5,500 square kilometers. The well is expected to be 5,150 meters deep while the water depth at the site is 2,582 meters. Statoil, with a 65% working interest, is the operator of the license on Block 2 for Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation. The remaining 35% is held by ExxonMobil. According

In Douglas Adams’ iconic The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Deep Thought tells us the ultimate answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is “42.” The origin and meaning of that number has always intrigued fans. But Douglas Adams explained that there was no real rhyme or reason why he chose “42.” It just popped in his head and he went with it. I always liked Deep Thought’s answer because 42 is a key number for people in the oil business – it’s the number of gallons in a standard barrel of oil. Now, I don’t think there are any sectors as exciting as oil, particularly now. We had a record year in 2011 in terms of prices. This year will be another record year as

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, January 24, 2012: Issue #1693 There’s an old saying that goes something like this: “In the valley of the blind, the ‘one-eyed man’ is king.” If you seriously consider what I’m about to show you, this old saying could well ring true for your investment portfolio at the end of this year. Perhaps even before. Let me explain… At roughly $2.41 per million Btu, U.S. natural gas prices are in the dumpster. The truth is, they’ve been declining for years. But the recent shale gas boom accelerated their fall. Now they’re the lowest they’ve been in over a decade. If it gets any cheaper, the companies that supply it will be paying you to take it. You see, they have a huge

The Australian subsidiary of global integrated energy company Chevron Corp. (CVX) announced the discovery of natural gas in the Satyr-3 well, offshore Western Australia. This discovery, 113 miles north of Exmouth Plateau area, marks Chevron’s thirteenth in the country since mid-2009. Located in the WA-374-P permit block in the Carnarvon Basin, the well was drilled to a water depth of 3,688 feet and encountered approximately 243 feet of net gas pay. Chevron acts as the operator of the block with a 50% interest, while the remaining stake is equally distributed between Royal Dutch Shell plc (RDSA) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM). In late December last year, Chevron discovered about 453 feet of net gas pay in Vos-1 well in the same basin. We believe that these exploration successes will boost

Among the most commonly asked questions by energy investors this new year is: will low natural gas prices continue in 2012 or will we see a durable rebound in prices from their multi-year plight? From a peak of about $13.60 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2008 (referring to spot prices at the Henry Hub, the benchmark supply point in Louisiana) to around $3.00 now – sinking in between to a low of $2.50 in September 2009 – the plummeting value of natural gas represents a decline of over 75% over three years. In fact, prices have been low, roughly around $4.00 per MMBtu, during this timeframe. Thanks to this steep fall, industry participants are pressing the panic button. But it Hasn’t Always Been this Way… It wasn’t long

Most are giant behemoths, employing millions of people between them. These companies – among the world’s largest corporations – are primarily in the banking and energy sectors. Some, like the giant oil and gas company, Saudi Aramco, aren’t open to investors at all. But many are. Some fund managers shun these companies. With the governments that control them wielding various degrees of power over their daily operations, shareholder interests aren’t always viewed as a top priority. Chances are, a city bus will rumble by advertising, “This Bus Runs on Clean Burning Natural Gas.” Hear that garbage truck squealing and grinding gears through your neighborhood on trash day? Chances are it’s also running on natural gas. Waste Management (NYSE: WM) boasts the largest natural gas fleet in the United States, with 1,000 trucks. In total, there are 112,000 vehicles fueled by natural gas in this country – more than the number of battery-powered electric cars. There are 1,000 natural gas fueling stations. Almost a quarter of all new transit vehicles run on natural gas. With these totals expected to increase, investors are once again betting big on LNG.

We currently maintained our Neutral recommendation on South Korean steelmaker POSCO (PKX). POSCO is the world’s third largest steelmaker on the basis of output. The company primarily manufactures steel for the shipping and construction industries and operates through its two steel production facilities, the Pohang Works and the Gwangyang Works. POSCO is in a position to reap the benefits from its wide regional diversification, self-sufficiency in raw materials and higher proportion of value-added products in its product mix over the longer term. According to the World Steel Association, global steel demand will grow by 6% in both 2011 and 2012 due to continued growth in demand from the emerging markets. The company is also branching off into fast-growing industries like graphene and synthetic natural gas. Recently, POSCO announced that it

Korean steel producer POSCO (PKX) is on its way to giving Korea its first synthetic natural gas (SNG) plant by the end of year 2013. The company commenced construction of the plant on June 7 at Gwangyang Steelworks. POSCO E&C will be responsible for the construction of the SNG plant with an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons. The plant, which is going to be a secured source of energy for the region, will be constructed using environment friendly technologies. Synthetic natural gas is a new alternative to Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), prepared by gasifying low-cost coal at high pressure and temperature and, subsequently, purified. This product, serving as a welcome substitute, opens up new avenue to restrict annual import of LNG worth KRW 200 billion in Korea. We believe

Encana Corporation (ECA), through its subsidiary Encana Natural Gas Inc., has teamed up with Heckmann Water Resources (“HWR”) to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its new mobile LNG fueling stations. California-based HWR, the parent company of Heckmann Corporation (HEK), provides water hauling services to Encana and other producers in the Haynesville shale gas play of Louisiana. Recently, Heckmann ordered an additional 200 LNG trucks from Peterbilt Motors Corporation of Denton, Texas. The truck fleet was mechanized by Westport HD Systems from Westport Innovations Inc., Vancouver. This is indicative of Heckmann’s initiatives to convert its water-hauling truck fleet to LNG from diesel, becoming the largest fleet operator of LNG trucks in North America. The truck fleet is intended to serve natural gas wells and water handling projects along with its network

On Friday, markets overcame fears of any near-term slide in the wake of global issues to end higher as materials and energy helped the indices post gains. The mass destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami in the third largest economy of the world, Japan, failed to unnerve US markets. Protests in Saudi Arabia also fizzled out letting investors share a cheerful mood. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed at 12,044.40 and gained 0.5% for the day. The Standard & Poor 500 gained 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.5% to close at 1,304.28 and 2,715.61, respectively. However, earlier losses in the week limited the markets from ending higher for the week as the Dow inched down 1%, S&P 500 shed 1.3% and Nasdaq lost 2.5%. On

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the companies. Under the non-binding key commercial terms of the Heads of Agreement, ConocoPhillips-Origin will also deliver liquefied natural gas (LNG) of about 4.3 million tons per annum (MTPA) for two decades to Sinopec. The stake sale will cut ConocoPhillips and Origin’s holdings in the Queensland-based Australia Pacific LNG venture to 42.5% each. Earnings per ADR (on a current cost of supplies basis), excluding one-time items and gains or losses from inventories, came in at $1.61, significantly ahead of the year-ago result of 86 cents and also exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.34.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Friday, October 15, 2010 Though few know of it, the global energy industry might be in for some huge changes before long… Within the next five years, the U.S. could become a major natural gas exporter in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It already produces a daily 57 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas. Selling a mere 10% of that abroad would make it the largest LNG exporter in the world. The competition – Russia, Australia and several Middle Eastern countries – couldn’t match that. However, the U.S. also has to deal with a local issue that will make or break it in the end… The Natural Gas Market The natural gas market is already undergoing some changes, thanks to

Europe’s largest oil company Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA) reported strong second quarter 2010 results, buoyed by a robust operating environment, production growth and cost cutting initiatives. Earnings per ADR (on a current cost of supplies basis), excluding one-time items and gains or losses from inventories, came in at $1.37, which were quite ahead of the year-ago result of $1.03 and also exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.34. Revenues were up 41.8% to $90.6 billion. Shell’s comfortable earnings beat is in stark contrast to the record quarterly loss reported by rival BP Plc (BP), which is struggling to cover the costs of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Writing this is going to be hard. As the matter of fact it is going to be one of the hardest things we have ever done. And the reason that’s so, is because we all work for a living, we all have families, and in some cases, not only have we worked in Lower Plaquemine’s Parish, some of us work for big oil. Because we have a bit of a unique perspective, we see the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico as an event that will have human and ecological consequences lasting for generations, just as we know there is no amount of money that can be spent that will bring back the lives of the 11 people that perished when the Deepwater Horizon caught fire and sank.

Earlier this week, Chevron Corp. (CVX) – the second-biggest U.S. oil company – announced the discovery of a new offshore natural gas site (Achilles-1) in Western Australia ’s Carnarvon Basin . The discovery builds on the integrated energy giant’s leading position in this hydrocarbon-rich area and follows the Clio-2 and the Kentish Knock-1 finds in August. Drilled to a total depth of 4,500 meters, the Achilles-1 well encountered 100 meters of net gas pay. The find is situated in the WA-374-P permit area (in the Greater Gorgon region), 160 kilometers off the coast of northwest Australia . Chevron Australia has a 50% operated interest in the prospect, with the other partners being ExxonMobil Corp. (XOM) and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA).
