The segment was among the most stable sectors in fiscal 2011 in terms of return. Fiscal 2011 witnessed continued volatility from the European debt crisis leading the U.S. Federal Reserve to reduce its growth forecast, raising projections for unemployment and leaning on buying more mortgage debt to tide over a troubled economy. The year has been hard on investors with major indexes registering low performances. The European debt crisis that plagued the markets last year will continue to worry investors in the coming period. In such a scenario we are hopeful about dividend paying utilities acting as a proxy to the asset classes of treasury bonds and gold. The company considers this to be a cost effective way to increase generation without building a new plant. Once the deal is finalized, Entergy Mississippi plans to invest in upgrading the acquired plants, taking the total cost of acquisition to $246 million. If approved by the regulatory authorities Entergy expects the deal to close in mid 2012.
Itron Inc. (ITRI) recently announced the completion of the installation of more than 150,000 Itron gas meter communication modules in Greater Houston for a natural gas distribution subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy Inc. (CNP). The project will include a total of 1.2 million communication modules and will be completed by 2013. These meters can effectively do away with the necessity of entering the premises of customers to take the readings manually. These communication modules employ the radio transmitting devices attached to the CenterPoint Energy’s customers’ existing natural gas meters, enabling the collection of readings once a month by a mobile meter reading device mounted to a CenterPoint Energy vehicle. According to Itron, CenterPoint is an old and valued customer and Itron is looking forward to conferring the benefits of smart metering

According to Bloomberg, New York-based The Blackstone Group (BX) may buy-out Australian real estate firm Valad Property Group, valued at approximately $240 million (A$220 million). Valad is heavily burdened with debt after the company struggled to pay off debt as the value of its assets plummeted through the financial crisis. In 2007, Valad purchased properties worth more than $2.2 billion (A$2 billion). Though Valad sold off some of these properties to raise new equity for repayment of loans, the company is still suffering to cut down debt, which led to $55.3 million (A$50.7 million) net loss as of six months ended December 2010. The deal is likely to mature as Blackstone is aggressively deploying capital in real estate with the price improvement following the recession. The deal followed Blackstone’s agreement

Trends on both fronts appear be favoring the alternative energy industry at present. The U.S. economy has shaken off the negative momentum that appeared to be taking hold in the middle of 2010. The fourth quarter GDP report, despite the subsequent negative revision, is showing the resumption of sustainable economic growth. Importantly, the drivers of economic growth appear to have shifted the more stable consumer spending side. Major economic reports, such as the ISM Indices, leading indicators and consumer confidence are all showing signs of renewed strength.
