Earnings Preview 12/16/11 There will only be a handful of firms reporting next week as the third quarter reporting season is almost over. A total of just 34 firms are scheduled to report, including 13 of the S&P 500. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. While few in number, some of the reports come from firms that are highly significant in that they will give clues to the overall direction of earnings in the fourth quarter. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). There will, however, be plenty of economic data for the market to chew on.

(KMX) reported its earnings for the third quarter of its fiscal year 2011, ended November 30, 2010, on December 21, 2010, barely surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2 cents per share. However, the market reacted negatively, with share prices falling subsequent to the earnings release due to the weak performance of CarMax Auto Finance and absence of the company’s outlook. Analysts were indifferent as well, without upgrading or downgrading the stock since the earnings announcement. Below we will cover the results of the recent earnings announcement, subsequent analyst estimate revisions and Zacks ratings for both short-term and the long-term. Third Quarter Highlights CarMax has beaten the Zacks Consensus Estimate with the help of a rebound in customer traffic and sales execution along with a favorable year-over-year comparison.

The profit was slightly higher than $103 million or 46 cents per share in the prior-year quarter. Net sales and operating revenues in the quarter went up 13% to $2.34 billion, higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.28 billion. Comparable-store used unit sales in the quarter rose 4%, driven by an improvement in sales conversion. Used vehicle sales appreciated 10.7% to $1.89 billion. If one strips out food and energy costs, prices were unchanged on the month, after rising just 0.1% in February and actually falling 0.1% in January. That means since the start of the year there has been absolutely no inflation at all at the core level. As a matter of fact, the last time core inflation rose more than 0.1% was in October. Year over year, core prices are up just 1.1%. Actually, stripping out food AND energy is not really needed, as food really is not an issue in terms of inflation. Much of the increase was due to strong sales by auto dealers, but even if those are stripped out the numbers still look pretty good, with a monthly increase of 0.6% on top of a 1.0% rise in February. Excluding autos, they year-over-year growth accelerated to 6.4% from 4.5%. Auto dealers such as CarMax (KMX) and parts stores like AutoZone (AZO) saw sales increase by 6.7%, more than reversing a 1.9% drop

With this, the automotive retailer has inched past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 25 cents per share.
Industry Rank Analysis 11-11-09 OK, Halloween is over, but some of the best-looking industries according to the Zacks Rank are those that not long ago were considered part of the living dead. Case in point, is the top performing sector — Auto-Truck-Tires. Out of 206 industries tracked, the sector has five of them, and the worst of the bunch, Foreign Autos, ranked tied for 89th with a composite score of 2.88. None of the groups were at the very top, but all were better than average. The original equipment parts makers (although one could argue about the grouping of some of the names) scored best with a rank of 44 and a composite score of 2.62. Three of the 28 firms in the industry, Fuel System Solutions (FSYS), Oshkosh Truck

In August, personal income rose by $19.3 billion, or 0.2%, and disposable personal income (or DPI, essentially after-tax income) rose by $15.5 billion, or 0.1%. The increase in personal income is essentially the same as we saw in July, and in line with consensus expectations. DPI was actually down very slightly in July, so even the 0.1% increase is an improvement. Even though inflation is low, DPI is not keeping up with it. In real terms, DPI is down for three months in a row, having fallen 0.2% in August, 0.1% in July and plunging 1.6% in June. Income from wages and salaries rose by $8.5 billion in August — almost the same as the $8.6 billion increase in July — however there was a big difference by sector. Service sector wages

CarMax (KMX) witnessed a net income of $103 million or 46 cents per share in the second quarter of fiscal 2010 ended August 31, 2009. This was a staggering rise from the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 18 cents per share and $14 million or 6 cents per share reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2009. Healthy increases in both used and wholesale vehicle unit sales triggered the rise in profits. Net sales and operating revenues rose 13% to $2.08 billion from $1.84 billion in the second quarter of last fiscal year. Comparable store used unit sales went up 8% for the quarter.
There were no surprises in the latest Beige Book. The Fed’s periodic report proclaimed, “Economic activity continued to stabilize in July and August.” This statement confirmed the data provided by several other reports. Overall, the tone of the report is that the U.S. economy has already hit bottom and is starting to climb its way out of a deep hole. However, as I have said many times, this recovery will not feel like a recovery to many Americans. Most districts credited the “Cash For Clunkers” program for helping sales, though some noted that it had an adverse affect on used car sales. The program was also credited for providing a short-term lift to manufacturing. Of course, what remains to be seen is whether or not Ford (F), CarMax (KMX) and

There is a focus on automation and simplifying product lines to lower costs and benefit from economies of scale. The average car now needs only 15-25 man-hours per vehicle and this drops 2% annually.
