OUTLOOK Crude Oil Mounting worries about Europe’s debt crisis, a persistently weak U.S. jobs market and less-than-encouraging guidance from the Federal Reserve have been weighing on investor sentiment, weakening oil prices to around $85 a barrel. Apprehensions about high U.S. crude stocks, the release of emergency oil supplies from government-held strategic reserves into the world market, and uncertainty over oil supply disruptions in the Middle East have added to the negative sentiment. These issues have stoked fears about the demand outlook for oil that has seen the commodity’s price plummet to 12-month lows earlier in the month. Incidentally, crude prices zoomed past the $110 per barrel level during the first half of the year. As per the latest release by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which provides official energy statistics

Cameron said that the deal – representing its first full subsea system supply in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea – includes the development of wellheads, trees, flow bases, electro-hydraulic multiplexed controls, connections, pipeline end manifolds and other associated subsea equipment. The company expects delivery to begin in early 2012. The Cameron-supplied subsea production systems will aid the fast track development of the Jette field located in blocks 25/7 and 25/8 offshore Norway.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Monday, September 12, 2011 Oil Services Industry Set for “Gusher Of Profits” As Ian Cooper’s recent article for Wealth Daily stated, the world isn’t necessarily running out of oil. It’s running out of “easy to get” oil. Oil companies aren’t chasing the vast amounts of fuel trapped in shale or tar sands because they want to… These sources are becoming the only ones left as production at the largest inland oil fields is declining, or is at least expected to soon. In its 2010 World Energy Outlook, the International Energy Agency estimated that approximately 40 percent of the oil production needed by 2020 has yet to be found or developed. By 2030, it will likely be closer to 60 percent. For the foreseeable future,

In an internal investigation report, drilling contractor Transocean Ltd (RIG) – the owner and operator of Deepwater Horizon oil rig at the heart of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) disaster – has accused British energy giant BP plc (BP) of decisions that led to the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history. As a reminder, on April 20, 2010, offshore driller Transocean’s ultra-deepwater Horizon drilling platform, contracted to BP, sank following an explosion while operating in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana. The incident killed 11 workers and spewed more than 200 million gallons of crude in what is touted as the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Subsequently, a moratorium was imposed on offshore drilling at water depths of more than 500 feet in the region,

We reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on Arris Group Inc. (ARRS). The company’s first-quarter 2011 financial results failed to meet the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Arris is a leading provider of infrastructure solutions for broadband networks. The company’s success is mostly dependent on the cable MSOs decision to install new networks or upgrade the existing networks. If the cable operators fail to compete effectively with other pay-TV service providers, then it will significantly affect Arris’ future growth. Management provided a weak financial outlook for the rest of 2011. Meanwhile, Arris diversified its offerings into the digital video market. Several cable TV operators are increasingly shifting toward an all-IP triple-play converged architecture offering cost-effective solution to their customers. In this context, the IP video gateway solutions of Arris may become its future

However, quarterly earnings dropped 18% from the year-ago adjusted profit level of 71 cents a share. The year-over-year disappointment is primarily a repercussion of the the Deepwater Horizon incident as well as project delays. (CAM) announced that it expects to record total charge of approximately 17 cents per share in the first quarter of 2011, bruised by the turmoil in the Middle East. Cost overruns associated with a subsea project delay in Nigeria is expected to adversely affect Cameron’s first quarter results by 15 cents per share, while the forgone accounts receivable for work done in Libya, owing to the U.S. government regulations, will impose a charge of 2 cents per share. In the fourth quarter earnings release, Cameron guided earnings per share between 63 cents and 66 cents for the first quarter and $2.65 and $2.75 for full-year 2011. However, unrest in Libya intensified with fresh attacks being launched in the key oil terminal city of Brega. Oil service shares surged higher over bullish indications coming from the energy sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up 0.1% and ended at 12,079.02. Eight out of 10 of the Standard & Poor 500 sectors ended higher and the index gained 0.3% to close at 1,309.63.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Tuesday, February 22, 2011 General Electric (NYSE: GE)’s $228 billion market cap makes it the largest U.S. manufacturer, as measured by market capitalization. After its problems during the financial crisis, the conglomerate had to reshuffle its portfolio. GE sold off many of its entertainment assets, reduced its dependence on its financial arm and strengthened its position in industrial markets. Now GE is trying to strengthen its manufacturing operations by broadening its energy business. In the past, that particular arm was heavily dependent on U.S. turbine sales. But the company is now on a spending spree in the oil services. It started in October, when GE paid $3 billion for Dresser, which makes engines, pumps and valves for the oil and gas industry.
Oil drilling equipment maker FMC Technologies Inc. (FTI) reported a mixed fourth quarter and full-year 2010 results. The adjusted company’s earnings per share from continuing operations in fourth quarter came at 69 cents, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. Compared with the year-ago quarter, earnings per share declined 8.0% from 75 cents, primarily due to lower volumes in the subsea systems and reduced operating income. Full-year 2010 earnings were $3.06 per share, up 6.3% year over year and 4.1% higher than our projection. The company’s quarterly revenue of $1,102.8 million surpassed our expectation of $1,056 million. On a year-over-year basis, revenue declined 4.9% from $1,160.2 million as sales declined in the company’s Energy Production Systems segment. Considering the integration expense, associated with the NATCO Group acquisition and the litigation costs related to the Deepwater Horizon matter of 3 cents, earning per share in the quarter came at 61 cents, compared with 56 cents in the prior-year quarter. Cameron’s impressive earnings reflect a lower interest expense along with a strong order and backlog levels. The company generated total revenue of $1,527.1 million in the quarter, up 24% year over year, attributed to strong contributions from all the business units. However, the results failed to meet our expectation of $1,581 million.

The federal government unveiled new regulations for offshore drillers and decided to keep its deepwater drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in place for now, according to a release by the Interior Department. In a bid to ensure safety and tackle the regulatory loopholes exposed by the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion, the Obama administration laid down stringent standards for equipment and technology used in offshore drilling, which includes cementing, blowout preventers and well design for offshore oil and gas projects. The new rules – that comes into effect immediately – will require companies to get independent certification of the safety of their rig operations. Additionally, the firms will have to have plans in place for recognizing potential hazards to help prevent human errors on all phases of activity,

Oil drilling equipment maker Cameron International Corp. (CAM) reported second quarter earnings per share (excluding special items) of 58 cents, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 55 cents. The better-than-expected results were mainly driven by solid performance in the execution of project-related business. However, revenue of $1.45 billion fell slightly short of our expectations of $1.47 billion. Cameron’s earnings outperformance is more impressive in the wake of its role in the huge oil spill accident in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). As a reminder, on April 20, offshore driller Transocean Inc’s (RIG) ultra-deepwater Horizon drilling platform, contracted to British major BP Plc (BP), sank following an explosion while operating in the U.S. GoM off the coast of Louisiana. The incident killed 11 workers and caused what is considered the worst

I have identified 2 stocks that I think just aren’t going to have upward price momentum in the near future so I’m deleting them. Kratos Defense and Security Solutions (KTOS) has downward price momentum and is now trading below it’s 50 day moving average. The stock has moved down for the last 3 weeks and has decreased in price 11.20% in the last 30 days . Barchart also has 9 of 12 technical sell signals for an overall sell score of 48%.
Can you hear that scurrying sound? It’s the sound of expensive shoes scampering across the floor of BP’s (NYSE: BP) legal department, as hoards of lawyers try to minimize the financial damage to the firm from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Lawsuits against BP and the other companies responsible are arriving by the dozen. And environmentalists are predicting carnage for marine life in the Gulf. Many onlookers, blitzed with TV images of wildlife choking and dying in thick sludge and Southerners fearful of losing their livelihoods, would probably subscribe to the “take ‘big oil’ to the cleaners” viewpoint. And as shares of the companies involved get hammered on the market, few have much sympathy for them. Let’s take a look at the facts as we know them… the ramifications

British Petroleum (NYSE: BP), who leased the rig that exploded, has stated that the cleanup efforts are costing $6 million per day. Estimates for the total cost of the cleanup have ranged from $1 billion to $7 billion. And the cost to the fishing industry could be as much as $2.5 billion. Florida tourism could suffer to the tune of $3 billion. Eventually, the companies responsible for the disaster and their insurance companies will pay the price, too.
Oil drilling equipment maker FMC Technologies Inc. (FTI) reported significantly better-than-expected first quarter 2010 results, helped by robust performance from its subsea oil and gas processing systems, as well as cost cutting initiatives. Earnings per share from continuing operations came in at 80 cents, comfortably beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 64 cents and the year-ago profit of 56 cents. Revenue of $1,050.3 million was almost unchanged from $1,053.0 million achieved during the first quarter of 2009 and marginally missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,058 million, as sales declined in the company’s Energy Processing Systems segment. FMC’s outperformance now shifts the focus on Cameron International Corp. (CAM), another leading maker of subsea systems. Cameron is scheduled to report earnings before the opening bell today. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Cameron’s fourth quarter is 53 cents per share, compared to the 75 cents per share earned in year-earlier period. The Houston-based oilfield service firm reported profit of 58 cents per share in the third quarter of 2009. This was 9.4% above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 53 cents despite pricing pressure and reduced order flow. The company believed wider margins at its Drilling & Production Systems (DPS) segment helped it to top expectations. But high levels of product inventories (particularly gasoline), along with still higher supplies, will limit any sustained crude gains, in our view. But way too many factors weigh on oil prices — from OPEC decisions and geostrategic tensions to the value of the U.S. dollar and seasonal variables — to definitively size up each one of them for their respective impact on prices. In its latest release, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a higher-than-anticipated increase in crude stockpiles, which rose by 3.7 million barrels for the week ending Jan 8.
Last week, oil drilling equipment maker Cameron International Corp. (CAM) closed the previously announced acquisition of Texas-based fellow oilfield service provider NATCO Group for approximately $780 million, following the approval by NATCO’s shareholders. In relation to the acquisition, Cameron reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to divest its Edge refinery desalter business and will license, on a non-exclusive basis, NATCO’s Dual Frequency electrostatic technology for refinery desalter products. This was based on the DOJ’s antitrust division’s view that the acquisition as originally proposed would significantly hamper U.S. refinery desalter manufacturing competition, resulting in higher prices and lower quality, service, and innovation. Incidentally, Cameron and NATCO are the top two domestic refinery desalter suppliers. The acquiistion involved an all-stock transaction whereby, NATCO stakeholders exchanged each of their shares

But high levels of product inventories (particularly gasoline), along with still higher supplies, will limit any sustained crude gains, in our view. But way too many factors weigh on oil prices, from OPEC decisions and geostrategic tensions to the value of the U.S. dollar and seasonal variables, to definitively size up each one of them for their respective impact on prices. In its latest release, the Energy Information Administration [EIA] reported a less-than-anticipated increase in crude stockpiles, which rose by 800,000 barrels for the week ending October 23. However, current crude oil stocks, at 339.9
