Technology licensing company Rambus Inc. (RMBS) received an untoward ruling for a lawsuit filed for patent infringement, by a judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC). In the initial verdict, the judge mentioned that the plaintiffs did not conduct any breach with Rambus’ patented technologies. However, the final judgment is due in July. In a suit filed in 2010, Rambus complained that a number of its patents have been illegally used by chip makers LSI Corp. (LSI), MediaTek Inc. and STMicroelectronics (STM). This is the second loss in a row for Rambus, which met a similar fate in November 2011. At that time, Rambus received an unfavorable ruling by a California jury on the long-drawn (almost 7 years) antitrust battle with Micron Technology Inc. (MU) and Hynix Semiconductor Inc.
Rambus Inc. (RMBS) signed a patent licensing agreement with MediaTek Inc. for an undisclosed sum, yesterday. Per the terms of the agreement, MediaTek can use Rambus’ patented technology for its integrated circuit products for five years. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. In 2010, Rambus accused MediaTek of unlawfully using its patented inventions. But last Friday, a judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC) negated the claims and gave the plaintiff a clean chit. Keeping aside the judge’s final ruling, which is due in July, both companies reportedly announced that they have settled all previous claims mutually. Despite a legal tussle, MediaTek opted for Rambus’ technology. Customers are demanding utmost flexibility in electronic products. As MediaTek is a leading System-on-Chip

Earnings rose to never-before-seen levels. iPhone, iPad and Mac sales also all reached new highs. Even more, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook says this is only the beginning. Per the terms of the agreement, Broadcom can use Rambus’ patented DRAM memory controllers and serial links technology for its logic integrated circuit products for five years. Rambus will receive royalty payments based on the shipment of these devices during the contract period. Apart from this deal, Rambus and Broadcom have settled all earlier claims regarding its patented innovations. Broadcom is a fabless semiconductor company and its operations circle around the broadband, mobile and wireless, as well as infrastructure and networking verticals. As per a report published by the U.S. research firm Gartner in April 2011, Broadcom is now one of the top 10 semiconductor companies in the world. We believe that association

Leading chipmaker Broadcom Corporation (BRCM) recently announced that the company will offer $500 million of senior notes. The company expects to use the net proceeds from the offering to fund a portion of its proposed acquisition of NetLogic Microsystems and other general corporate purposes. In September, Broadcom Corporation announced that it will acquire NetLogic Microsystems for $3.7 billion or $50 per share. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, NetLogic develops high-performance intelligent semiconductor solutions that power next-generation Internet networks. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2012. Broadcom expects the acquisition to be accretive to bottom-line by approximately $0.10 (excluding onetime items) in 2012. Management expects the acquisition to broaden Broadcom’s infrastructure portfolio with a number of critical new product lines and technologies, including knowledge-based processors, multi-core embedded processors,

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) is scheduled to announce its third quarter fiscal 2011 results on October 24, 2011, and we notice downward movements in analyst estimates. Second Quarter Overview Texas Instruments delivered a decent second quarter, with pro forma earnings per share of 58 cents exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5 cents, or 9.4%. The company reported revenue of $3.46 billion, which was up 1.9% sequentially and at the lower end of the originally guided range of $3.41 billion and $3.69 billion. The sequential increase was driven by strength in Analog and Embedded Processing segments, partially offset by the expected weakness in the company’s Wireless segment.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Friday, September 30, 2011 Two recent events have likely ushered the dawn of NFC smartphone technology in the mainstream marketplace. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) finally released Google Wallet on September 19, Isis announced this week that a handful of major handset manufacturers are already showing support for its NFC platform. (Isis is a joint mobile payment venture between AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and T-Mobile.) While Isis most likely won’t come online until 2012, it should offer some competition to Google, which is likely to use its recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility to help further push its NFC agenda. While these companies duke it out over who controls the NFC payment market, the semiconductor companies producing the chips used in the devices will most

by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Tuesday, September 20, 2011 If you can’t beat ‘em, just buy ‘em… Broadcom’s (Nasdaq: BRCM) acquisition last week of NetLogic (Nasdaq: NETL) is likely to set off a chain reaction as larger, older semiconductor companies try not to get left in the dust. Valued at 3.7 billion, it’s the largest semiconductor industry acquisition in seven years. The willingness of Broadcom to pay such a high premium represents the degree of paradigm shift in the industry. Semiconductor stocks across the board rose due to an overall market rally last week. But according to The Street, “The chip rally is notable because several stocks in the sector climbed on heavier volume – a sign that institutions are piling into the stocks.” This institutional pickup could signal

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

Markets marked one of the strongest quarters of the decade with negligible movement in the indices as investors patiently await the job data from the Labor Department, scheduled for Friday. The indices faced a stiff challenge from global issues but survived the concerns to remain upbeat. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained the most among the benchmarks over the quarter, jumping 6.4%. The Standard & Poor 500 and Nasdaq followed the Dow, gaining 5.4% and 4.8%, respectively. The Dow was also the best performer for the month of March posting a gain of 0.8% while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq dropped by 0.1% and 0.04%, respectively. For the day, the Dow and S&P 500 slid 0.3% and 0.2% while the Nasdaq gained 0.2%. The trend of low volumes continued

The board of directors of Qualcomm (QCOM) recently increased the company’s quarterly cash dividend by approximately 13% to 21.5 cents per share on its common stock. The hike in the dividend rate will be effective after the payment of the earlier dividend of 19 cents per share, as announced by the company, on January 14, 2011. The rise in dividend was mainly driven by significant surge in demand for the high-end 3G smartphones and tablets resulting in steady revenue and earnings growth. This is the company’s sixth dividend increase during the last five years. The company has been paying dividends uninterruptedly for the last nine years. The current dividend yield is 1.33%. Qualcomm possesses a strong balance sheet with $19,107 million of cash and marketable securities. The excess cash, available

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), the largest global manufacturer of mobile phone chipsets, has decided to acquire leading Wi-Fi chip maker Atheros Communications Inc. (ATHR) for around $3.2 billion. According to our view, the primary reason of this acquisition is to offer an innovative product that will ensure seamless mobility between wireless and Wi-Fi networks. This acquisition will be the largest in the history of Qualcomm. The deal is expected to be closed by mid-2011 subject to regulatory approval and will be slightly accretive to Qualcomm’s earnings in its fiscal year 2012. We believe the acquisition of Atheros will benefit Qualcomm in three ways: (1) Qualcomm will now become an integrated chipset developer for the mobile computing market. So far, the company benefits from technical exclusivity for both ordinary mobile phones and

Concerned about the skirmish in the Korean peninsula and the Federal Reserve’s darker view about the economy, investors sold off stocks Tuesday, sending major indexes off at least 1.3% and reigniting worries about the pace and strength of the economic recovery. Fears that Ireland’s debt woes could spread beyond the country’s borders also played a part in the market’s slide yesterday. The Dow average plunged more than 142 points, or 1.3%, for its fourth drop in the past six sessions as downbeat news on the economy and reports that North Korea had fired artillery shells on a South Korean island, killing two South Korean soldiers, had investors dumping equities. The technology-laden Nasdaq Composite index dropped 1.5% to 2494.95 and the broader S&P’s 500-stock index fell 1.4% to 1180.73. On the

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) reported third quarter earnings that were up 12.1% sequentially and 69.4% year over year, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3 cents. The strong earnings growth was driven by healthy revenues, a better mix of business, cost control and good execution. Despite the positive surprise, Texas Instruments’ shares dropped 1.28% in after-hours trading on continued concerns regarding the slowing of demand, as evident from the first bookings decline in 7 quarters. Texas Instruments has been reporting very strong revenue growth over the past four quarters, indicative of share gains at the expense of its analog peers, particularly National Semiconductor Corp.
Intel Corp., (INTC) which recently acquired security-software maker McAfee Inc. (MFE) in a $7.68 billion transaction, is believed to be nearing a deal to acquire the wireless business of Infineon Technologies.
Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) reported second quarter earnings that were up 20.1% sequentially and 159.9% year over year, beating the Zacks Consensus estimate by 2 cents. The strong earnings growth was driven by healthy revenues (although just short of our estimate), a better mix of business, cost control and good execution. Despite the relatively strong performance, shares tumbled 5.28% after hours on concerns regarding the slowing of demand due to much weaker order growth. The company has been reporting very strong revenue growth over the past three quarters, indicative of share gains at the expense of its analog peers, particularly National Semiconductor Corp (NSM) and also, possibly Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI). Share gains should continue over the next few quarters as well, as operation of the RFAB starts lowering costs,

Broadcom generated revenues of $1.604 billion in the second quarter of 2010, up 54.3% year over year and up 9.7% sequentially. The results surpassed management’s revenue guidance of $1.535 – $1.635 billion and the Zacks Consensus Estimate (ZCE) of $1.592 billion.
