St. Jude Medical Inc. (STJ) recently disclosed its decision to build on its mutual agreement with Abbott Laboratories (ABT) by revealing the long-term Choice Alliance joint venture. This initiative provides St. Jude Medical the opportunity to incorporate Abbott’s drug-eluting stents with its cardiovascular, cardiac rhythm management and electrophysiology offerings. Both companies have agreed to endorse each other’s products to their respective customers. Further, Abbott has received the rights to promote St. Jude’s RadiAnalyze Xpress Measurement System and the ILUMIEN PCI Optimization System. This alliance is expected to benefit patient outcomes, as doctors will be able to combine Abbott’s XIENCE family of stents with St. Jude’s optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) know-how to widen the scope of clinical treatments.
Share buybacks increased by 46% in 2011. Has there ever been a more bullish indicator? There are a number of signals that bode well for price appreciation with individual stocks: growing market share, rising sales, strong earnings growth and improving margins… But you shouldn’t overlook another excellent indicator: share buybacks. According to Standard & Poor’s, U.S. public companies spent at least $437 billion last year buying their own shares back. That was 46% more than in 2010. Is this a good thing? Absolutely… Regardless of whether you’re an individual or a corporation, sitting on cash isn’t terribly rewarding these days with the average money market fund paying five one-hundredths of 1%. And if the outlook is uncertain, a business owner doesn’t want to commit to building new facilities or taking

Highlights from the Quarter Profit (as reported) for the fourth quarter slipped roughly 21% year over year to $163.4 million (or 51 cents a share) as higher sales were overshadowed by lofty special charges. Revenues rose 4% year over year to $1,406.9 million, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1,400 million. Double-digit growth across the company’s Atrial Fibrillation, Cardiovascular and Neuromodulation segments was partly masked by the decline in the core Cardiac Rhythm Management (“CRM”) division. Revenues from the CRM division fell 4% year over year, indicating sustained softness in the U.S. ICD market. ICD revenues

Picking the right stock is never easy, especially in a difficult and volatile market. There are thousands of stocks to choose from and many investors eventually end up boiling the ocean. The U.S. economy continues to be cramped by a spate of headwinds including a still unstable job market, high debt, a soft housing sector and last but surely not the least, the European sovereign debt contagion, which have hit industries across the board. The recent EU summit did not bring out any concrete solution to staunch the debt crisis which began in Greece in 2009. The healthcare sector, traditionally revered as a safe haven for investors and one of the most preferred areas to take cover in the midst of market volatility, has been somewhat proved not immune to

Wilson Greatbatch, the self-professed “humble tinkerer” and a trailblazer in medical technology, invented the first implantable cardiac pacemaker in 1958 which kept the rhythm of millions of heartbeats and preserved countless lives across the planet. A couple of decades later, the first patient received an implantable defibrillator, the brainchild of Dr. Michel Mirowski, in 1980. But that took place decades ago and we have come a long way since then. Medical technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, revolutionizing the way medicine is practiced, in a hi-tech world. And what is more quintessential in this Faustian quest for good, and even better health, than taking care of the heart? There is a Chinese proverb that goes: “If you keep a green bough in your heart, the singing bird will come.”

These devices are meant to treat heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Though expected, the US approval comes even earlier than the company’s original guidance of late 2011 or early 2012.
The performance of incumbent players in the MedTech industry continued to be hamstrung by a spate of macro issues (including sustained price and procedure volume pressures) in the September quarter. The prevailing macroeconomic factors, pricing headwinds, austerity measures, reimbursement pressure and the impact of health care reform continues to weigh on the medical devices industry, exacerbated by Europe’s sovereign debt plight. The beleaguered U.S. implantable defibrillator market continues to bother cardiac devices makers, as reflected by sustained implant volume pressure. On the other hand, companies in the orthopedic domain remain affected by a still choppy reconstructive implant market as they faced sustained pressure across hip, knee and spine businesses in the third quarter (albeit to a lesser extent vis-à-vis the sequentially prior quarter). Although a number of these issues are

Recently, Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (EW) received conditional approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for enrollment of a certain group of patients in the PARTNER II trial. The trial is studying the company’s next-generation Sapien XT transcatheter heart valve (THV). Under the new cohort (PARTNER II Cohort A) of the trial, patients (up to 2,000) with severe, symptomatic aortic valve stenosis, who are at higher risk of traditional open heart surgery, will be enrolled. They will be randomized to undergo either surgery or receive transcatheter valve replacement with Sapien XT (delivered either transfemorally or transapically). The primary endpoints will be a combination of mortality rate and major stroke at two years while valve performance and quality-of-life will be considered as secondary endpoints. Third Quarter Flashback Profit (as reported) dipped 3% year over year, hit by a $25 million charge associated with the company’s takeover of Orthovita, Memometal Technologies and Boston Scientific’s (BSX) Neurovascular business. Revenues jumped roughly 15% year over year to $2,031 million, essentially in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The healthy growth was triggered by higher sales across the board, strongly backed by acquisitions. Sales from the company’s Reconstructive unit rose 8% in the quarter (up 3.9% barring the currency exchange translation impact). Adjusted earnings of 41 cents for the quarter outstripped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 34 cents. Profit surged 17% year over year. Sales rose 3% year over year to $131.7 million, matching the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company backed its revenue and earnings forecast for the full year. Greatbatch is a leading producer and supplier of batteries, capacitors and components used in implantable medical devices.
Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX) strengthened its Peripheral Interventions portfolio with the launch of Coyote Balloon catheter (0.014 inch) to treat patients undergoing peripheral angioplasty procedures below the knee. The company is marketing the product in the US, Europe and other international markets. Prior to this, in June, the company had launched Mustang percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) balloon catheter (0.035 inch) globally. Introduction of this device could prove beneficial to a huge patient population as according to estimates about 8?10 million patients in the US suffer from peripheral artery disease (PAD), giving way to blockage in vessels of the peripheral vasculature. In such cases, PTA balloon catheters come into play in peripheral angioplasty and stenting procedures to open up blocked arteries.
June quarter results mostly mirror the preceding quarter as a host of macro headwinds (including price and procedure volume pressures) continued to haunt the MedTech industry and weighed on the performance of the incumbent players. Although a number of these issues are expected to linger over the second-half of 2011, the industry is expected to fare relatively better this year thanks to several tailwinds and growth opportunities. Industry Dynamics The global medical devices industry is fairly large, intensely competitive and highly innovative, with estimated worldwide sales of more than $300 billion in 2011. The U.S. is the largest market, with estimated sales of roughly $95 billion in 2010. The highly-regulated medical devices industry is divided into different segments including Cardiology, Oncology, Neuro, Orthopedic and Aesthetic Devices. The U.S. medical devices

We reiterate our Neutral recommendation for Greatbatch Inc. (GB). Second-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings per share of 43 cents met the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Revenues rose 4% year over year to $146.5 million, topping the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $141 million. Sales were boosted by solid double-digit growth at the company’s Orthopedic franchise backed by favorable foreign exchange translation, which offset declines across other businesses. Greatbatch lifted its revenue and earnings forecast for the full year. Orthopedic revenues surged 24% in the quarter, fueled by customer product launches, market share gains as well as favorable foreign currency impact. Vascular Access sales fell 2% while CRM/Neuromodulation revenues edged down 1%, hurt by sustained pricing pressure and sluggishness in the CRM market. Revenues from Greatbatch’s Electrochem segment dipped 2% in the quarter. Greatbatch

Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

The deal, which was announced on June 6, 2011, also involves an additional payment of $12 million contingent upon meeting specific milestones. Memometal makes products for extremity indications with annual sales of roughly $30 million. The entity is strengthening its foothold in the rapidly growing global extremity devices market with a broad range of foot, ankle, hand and wrist implant products. The acquisition boosts Stryker’s exposure in the extremities market and reinforces its position as a major player in the fast-growing foot and hand segments of this market. SurModics receives royalties on sales of the product. The news impacted SurModics’ shares negatively. We too have slashed our earnings estimate for fiscal 2012 by $0.08 per share. This follows the recent competition of its all-cash tender offer for the buyout. Shareholders holding roughly 87.6% of Orthovita’s outstanding shares tendered their shares in the offer. Stryker completed the acquisition through the merger of its indirect wholly owned subsidiary Owl Acquisition Corporation with Orthovita. With the deal closure, Orthovita has now become an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Stryker. Per the agreement terms, shareholders of Orthovita received $3.85 for each share they hold. The data was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery. It was observed that Valiant stent graft is a safe and effective treatment for patients with descending thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) of degenerative etiology. TAA entails dangerous swelling in the body’s main artery, which if ruptures usually results in death. As per estimates, about 60,000 people in the US suffer from TAA. Treatment with stent graft or invasive surgery is possible if the condition is detected early. The suits, which were filed at the District Court of Duesseldorf, Germany, and the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division (Patents Court), U.K., involve three patents and seek injunctive relief and monetary compensation. Minnesota-based heart devices maker AGA Medical Holdings has been involved in litigation with Occlutech since 2006.
Leading pelvic-health devices maker American Medical Systems (AMMD) recently initiated a large-scale global registry of penile prosthetic outcomes. The new registry, dubbed PROPPER (Prospective Registry of Outcomes with Penile Prosthesis for Erectile Restoration), is managed by a crew of eminent urologists looking to better characterize patient satisfaction associated with modern penile prosthetic implants. The multi-year company-sponsored PROPPER registry, essentially the first-of-its-kind, has been designed to better understand the real-world outcomes of penile implant surgery to treat erectile dysfunction (“ED”). The registry is expected to enroll more than 1,000 ED patients recommended for penile prosthesis by their physicians. The research, which will initially engage ten sites, will involve a prospective measure of patient responses by investigating physicians at regular intervals (over a 1-5 year period) using questionnaires and electronic data collection.

The company will also discontinue the development of Nevo sirolimus-eluting coronary stent. Cordis intends to focus on other cardiovascular therapies instead. Cypher Sales Were Under Pressure The decision to discontinue Cypher stent does not come as a surprise given the declining sales of the product. Changing dynamics in the drug-eluting stent (DES) market along with unlicensed competition from products infringing Cordis’ patents led to an erosion in Cypher stent’s pricing, sales and market share.
