Harris Corp. (HRS) recently won a contract worth $39 million from the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for Falcon III AN/PRC-152A wideband handheld tactical radios. The recent contract is a part of the $400 million agreement with the IDIQ, under which Harris will provide assistance regarding the upgradation of SOCOM’s tactical radio stock. The remaining orders will be issued to Harris in the forthcoming months, hence increasing the company’s order backlog in the upcoming quarters. The Falcon III AN/PRC-152A wideband technology is gaining huge popularity within the defense sector of many countries worldwide as it facilitates faster transmission of data, voice and video in a secure manner. Recently, Harris declared third quarter 2012 financial results, with both EPS and revenue surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimates. In the reported quarter, the

The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. The growth of the Aerospace and Defense industry depends largely on the spending outlook of government departments, with the U.S. defense budget being the primary driver. The industry largely depends on U.S. government contracts. Given the uncertain macroeconomic environment, not just in the U.S. but also globally, the industry faces the risk of fewer new orders as customers are more likely to postpone or cancel contractual orders and/or payments. Defense spending is the major source of revenue for the top nine global aerospace and defense companies, with the US accounting for more than 40% of total global defense spending. However, with the U.S. government expected to institute greater austerity in its

We are downgrading our long-term recommendation on Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) to Underperform owing to feeble macro data points in the entire airline industry and the company’s weak outlook for the first quarter. Theentire airline industry is struggling with higher fuel prices and a slow moving U.S. economy. We expect conditions to worsen further over the year, due to the weak outlook for Europe, stemming from its financial problems, which is dragging down the global airline profits to half from the 2010 peak. In the worst-case scenario of a full-blown Euro-zone crisis, Europe will likely drag the U.S. into a recession, pulling down growth in China and other emerging economies. Ensuing losses in the global airline industry would then be massive, perhaps the worst since the 2008 financial crisis. Coming

The Boeing Company (BA), along with Airbus and Embraer S.A. (ERJ), signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on the development of drop-in, affordable aviation biofuels. The three leading airframe manufacturers agreed to seek collaborative opportunities to speak in unity to government, biofuel producers and other key stakeholders to support, promote and accelerate the availability of sustainable new jet fuel sources. The three companies are of the consensus that the biggest threats to the aviation industry are the price of oil and the impact of commercial air travel on environment. By working with Airbus and Embraer on sustainable biofuels, Boeing hopes to accelerate the availability of aviation biofuel. The collaboration agreement supports the industry’s multi-pronged approach to continuously reduce the industry’s carbon emissions.
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) posted mixed results for the December quarter surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate on the bottom line but missing the consensus at the top. Looking forward, the company offers a strong program portfolio positioned to take advantage of focus areas in the defense space, an improving balance sheet and an ongoing share repurchase program. Our bullish outlook for the company is supported by favorable projected revenue, diversified revenue and earnings streams, and discounted relative valuation metrics. However, our bullishness would be tempered by apprehension regarding defense cutbacks on high-cost platform programs, over-exposure to the DOD budget, lower backlog, cost over-runs and reductions in the Afghanistan and Iraq operations. Northrop Grumman is the fourth largest U.S. defense contractor behind The Boeing Company (BA); Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT); and

We currently remain on the sidelines with Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) due to the impact of the Euro-crisis on U.S. economic fundamentals. This keeps the risk high for further cutbacks in defense budgets. However, we believe market pessimism is fully accounted for in the current valuation of the defense behemoth, which is priced at a discount to both industry peers and the overall market. Lockheed Martin is the largest U.S. defense contractor with a platform-centric focus that guarantees a steady inflow of follow-on orders from a leveraged presence in the Army, Air Force, Navy and IT programs. We expect the company to benefit from a strong defense focus on a number of its platform programs, such as the C-130 Hercules & C-5 Galaxy transport aircrafts, F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role jet,

We maintain our Neutral stance on the defense behemoth The Boeing Co. (BA). Boeing’s future prospects to a large extent depends on the defense budget, as a major chunk of its revenue comes from government contracts. The European crisis and rising possibility of U.S Defense cutback will impact the order book and eventually slow down the growth trajectory of the company. Numbering among the positives for the company is its strong presence in the international commercial airline markets, which will allow the company to capitalize on the potential growth in the commercial space. Boeing also caters to international customers and allies with international partners to increase efficiency through exchange of technology. Its strong balance sheet and consistent cash flows provide it the with the necessary financial support to increase shareholder

We maintain our Neutral recommendation on Embraer S.A (ERJ). Improved worldwide commercial and defense aviation demand reflect a positive outlook for the future. In such a scenario, we believe Embraer will be able to sustain its strong position in the security solution business across Brazilian and other governments with a series of applications. Embraer’s worldwide customer orders servicing and on-time deliveries of corporate, defense jets and executive jet-support structures are worth mentioning. Such efforts are expected to foster stronger global footprints while generating healthy revenue in the near future. We are confident of the company’s diversification into broader defense and corporate jets, which are anticipated to lend more stability to the company’s earnings stream and foster cash flow growth, going forward.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you know that Facebook has filed its initial paperwork with regulators for its initial public offering (IPO). And they’ve hired five underwriters for the job, with Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) taking the lead role. The company is currently looking at a valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion, which would be one of the largest initial public offerings in U.S. history. These Numbers Make No Sense… Facebook generated $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011, and a nice $1 billion in net income. For those of us who truly value fundamentals: If Facebook goes public and hits its high end with a $100-billion market cap – that means it would have a P/E of 100 times trailing earnings.
French conglomerate Dassault Group’s Rafale combat jet emerged as the lowest bidder for the multi-billion contract for the Indian Air Force. The $10.4 billion deal is for supplying 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force (‘IAF’). The order heralded Rafale’s entry into the export market. Rafale’s entry into the export market is a major bad news for the beleaguered U.S. defense contractors who are looking offshore to compensate for the Pentagon’s planned axing of almost $1 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade. Although defense primes have mostly reported upbeat numbers for fiscal 2011, we are concerned about future growth in order backlogs from domestic programs. Rafale emerged the winner beating five contenders and arch-rival Eurofighter Typhoon. Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multi-role fighter.

The company posted fourth-quarter 2011 operating earnings of $2.14 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.94. However, this was lower than the year-ago quarterly earnings of $2.28 by a margin of 14 cents. The downcast in earnings, year over year, was due to lower government spending on defense.
The airline industry was hit hard in 2011, by the unrelenting market turmoil and rising fuel costs after a strong rebound in 2010. Major carriers experienced declining year-over-year earnings and revenues. Unfortunately, we foresee a similar scenario in 2012. Conditions could worsen in 2012, stemming from the weak outlook for Europe given its financial problems. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines are expected to generate overall profits of $3.5 billion in 2012, down from the estimated $6.9 billion in 2011 and $16 billion in 2010. This steep decline in the industry’s profitability is a function of the overall unfavorable macro backdrop in which the industry has to operate this year. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). The central bank also cautioned that the global financial scenario poses a serious threat for the domestic economy.
The Boeing Company (BA) announced that it has finalized an agreement with Air Lease Corporation (AL) for supplying four 787-9 Dreamliners. Air Lease also exercised an existing option for procurement of four Next-Generation 737-800s. Overall, the order value came at above $1.2 billion. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a slightly larger version of the 787-8 and will carry 250-290 passengers on routes spanning 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles. The 787 provides airlines with higher fuel efficiency, resulting in high environmental standards. According to Boeing, the airplane uses 20% less fuel than its peers. Boeing has a unique position as the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world in terms of revenues, orders and deliveries. Besides, it is one of the leading global aerospace and defense contractors. Also, its revenues are spread

The tide for commercial aerospace appears to have turned, as the global economy continues to recover. Both airline traffic and new aircraft orders have significantly recovered from their recession lows. Therefore, the stocks dealing with aerospace and defense products should be a good pick at least for the next couple years. Aerospace companies see continued growth in their backlog, with the industry now expected to grow in the mid-single-digit rate. However, the past decade has seen a much slower growth rate, so we have our reservations about this optimistic projection. The recent rebound in commercial air traffic and a slight increase in defense spend is good news for companies in the segment. Growth in commercial aircraft is expected to be driven by increased demand for new age jet engines which

The administration is catching up to reduce flab in the budget, and the defense budget seems to stand out. In what is one of the final steps, the Pentagon has submitted to President Barack Obama a draft of its strategic budget review before its release. In the review, the Pentagon is seeking to trim about $450 billion in defense spending over 10 years to meet deficit reduction targets. The review, which will go to Congress in early 2012, will be accompanied by a defense funding plan through fiscal 2017. As of September, United and Continental’s check-in and ticket counter facilities have been relocated at 53 airports and more than half the fleet, including the first Boeing Co. Concurrently, the Air Force also exercised a contract option and Raytheon received a $5 million order to convert Lot 4 MALD production of the baseline to the MALD-J variant. MALD is a high-tech, low-cost flight vehicle that is modular, air-launched and programmable. It weighs less than 300 pounds and has a range of approximately 500 nautical miles. The variant protects aircrews and their aircraft by duplicating the combat flight profiles and signatures of U.S. and allied aircraft that confuses enemy air defenses. While the 10.8 multiple to our earnings estimate for 2011 represents a 37% discount to the peer group, we believe the valuation is justified by GE’s weaker earnings power. The energy business is expected to drive long-term growth for General Electric, as global demand for alternative energy production will continue to increase. The company had an order growth of 15% in the last reported quarter, primarily driven by demand for energy equipment. Aviation is another bright spot, with the rebound in commercial air traffic driving demand for GE’s new age jet engines. The jet engines are in high demand among the leading aircraft manufacturers, particularly Boeing (BA). However, the Industrial business and

Northrop’s fortunes are heavily tied to missile defense-related programs and we caution that these programs are tempting targets in order to reduce the budget deficit. Northrop Grumman supplies a broad array of products and services to the U.S. Department of Defense. Its revenue and earnings growth are fortunately driven by its strong presence in the current focus areas of cyber security, modernization of defense and homeland security assets, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, advanced electronics and software development. The system developed by Lockheed significantly improves raid cell count and is 40 times more accurate than the conventional radar system. The technology used to develop the IRST system has enabled it to track down multiple targets over a large area at a single go and the sensor continues to perform at a consistent level despite the electronic attack or jamming of radars.
Defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) announced that it received a contract from the U.S. Army worth $383 million to maintain, operate and sustain the Persistent Threat Detection Systems (“PTDS”). PDTS is a helium filled aerostat, which is a highly effective, cost efficient, surveillance and communication system for the Army.
New Orders for Durable Goods dipped a slight 0.1% in August. That was slightly below the consensus expectations of an increase of 0.1%. The July numbers were revised slightly upwards. It was first reported as an increase of 4.0%, but now they say new orders rose 4.1%. Given the volatile nature of the Durable Good series, the miss and the offsetting upward revision are just about irrelevant. The drop from last month is a bit more significant, but only a bit. While this is an important economic indicator, I don’t think it is telling a particularly significant story with this release. Most of the drop from last month was due to the extremely volatile Transportation Equipment side. More specifically, from the Non-Defense Aircraft component, which is often the case when

The largest U.S. low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines (LUV) plans to keep next year’s capacity relatively flat with the 2011 level. The company might not increase flights even in 2013. The decision was based on surging fuel prices and economic weakness. Given steep rises in fuel prices, the company is taking cautious steps to counter weaker demand, softness in corporate travel trends and lower bookings due to high unemployment and the recent topsy-turvy in financial markets. Although Southwest has implemented eight fare increases since last December in response of fuel price inflation, it is now cutting capacity to handle sluggish demand. Southwest will trim its domestic flights next year but increase international voyages. The purchase of AirTran, earlier this year, boosted its flying capacity by 25%.
