This subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (UTX) will close down its Cheshire, Connecticut, plant by early 2011. From the second quarter of 2010, it will begin shifting some operations from the East Hartford facility to Columbus, Georgia, Singapore and Japan. Pratt & Whitney, which is suffering due to sagging demand from airlines, employs 35,000 workers worldwide, with 11,000 in Connecticut. The company rejected an offer that the Machinists union valued at more than $80 million in wage and other concessions and a state plan proposing $100 million in economic assistance over five years.
Late Friday, the Treasury Department released the budget deficit for August. It came in at $111.4 billion, which was far better than the $140 billion monthly shortfall that had been expected. It was also slightly less than the budget shortfall in August 2008. And it was a huge improvement over the $180.7 billion deficit in July. However, don’t get too excited about the month-to-month decline as the monthly budget deficit numbers are extremely seasonal. Although that seasonality is reason to be very optimistic. Not long ago, the projections for the fiscal 2009 budget deficit were running at about $1.8 Trillion. With 11 months now under our belt (the Government’s fiscal year ends in September), the cumulative deficit is now $1.38 Trillion. Thus if September were to come in at the same level as

Pitted against Airbus’s A319 aircraft, Boeing’s 787 series is plagued by delays. The inaugural test flight at the end of fiscal 2009 is more than two years behind the original delivery schedule. The company has already deferred the inaugural delivery of the 787 series aircraft five times. This took WestJet’s pending deliveries for 737-700 series aircraft from Boeing to 54. With this order, Boeing has been able to maintain its position as the sole supplier to WestJet. As of now, WestJet’s fleet consists of an all-Boeing squad of eighty-one 737 aircrafts. Boeing’s 737-700 aircraft is pitted against Airbus’s A319 aircraft. To date, Boeing has booked more than 5,000 orders from around 120 customers spread around the globe. Of this, more than 2,100 deliveries worth more than $158 billion are pending. Boeing’s focus on 737-700 is evident with its earlier revelation of 2% improvement on fuel consumption by 2011, through a combination of airframe and engine improvements.
Yesterday, Boeing (BA) said it had completed its critical design review of Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures for Panama’s Tocumen International Airport and Howard Airport. The critical design review, which took place at the Copa Airlines training center in Panama City, assessed the “fly-ability” of the procedures to ensure compatibility with airline crew procedures. RNP uses global-positioning satellites and onboard flight-management systems to guide airplanes accurately along precise flight paths. More precise routing will help in saving flight time and fuel consumption significantly by providing the most direct arrival routes to the runways. It will also help in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. In May, Boeing signed an agreement with Panama’s Civil Aviation Authority to provide RNP procedures as part of the country’s effort to set new standards for safe and

Boeing and the USAF Tanker Program: The Plot Thickens! Boeing (BA) apparently is considering proposing on the upcoming USAF Tanker Program re-bid with versions of two of its models — the 767 and the 777 — in the hopes that one of them will be selected over the single Northrop Grumman (NOC)/Airbus A330-based submittal. The following is provided for those of you interested in the specifications — and the differences — between the three aircraft (for the Boeing 777-based version, we have used data for the 777 Freighter as being probably closest to the final configuration): In case you’ve forgotten, the current KC-767 has no cargo capacity, as it is solely an aerial-refueling tanker, which is what Boeing may have thought USAF wanted during the last tanker tussle. Instead, USAF
