Forest Laboratories, Inc. (FRX) recently reported back-to-back positive news on the pipeline front. The company and partner Gedeon Richter Plc. announced that their late-stage anti-psychotic candidate, cariprazine, met its primary endpoint in two phase III studies. The studies were conducted to evaluate cariprazine for the treatment of acute exacerbation of schizophrenia. Results showed that patients in the cariprazine arm achieved a significant improvement in symptom compared to patients in the placebo arm. Statistically significant separation from placebo was observed in all doses from week 2 and at each subsequent time point. Forest Labs and Gedeon said that the higher dose showed separation as early as week 1 of treatment. The results were similar to data presented earlier from a phase IIb fixed-dose placebo-controlled study. Cariprazine is one of the candidates

Gilead’s adjusted earnings per share of 92 cents (including stock option expense) for the fourth quarter of 2011 missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 8 cents, as higher revenues were offset by increased research and development (R&D) expenses. However, earnings were 2 cents above the year-earlier figure of 90 cents. Fourth quarter revenues were up 10% from the prior-year quarter to $2.2 billion, spurred by higher product sales. Total revenue also edged past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.19 billion. Other than the fourth quarter miss, 2011 was an eventful year for Gilead on all fronts, namely commercial, regulatory and financial.
Forest Laboratories, Inc. (FRX) and partner Gedeon Richter recently presented positive top-line results on their antipsychotic candidate, cariprazine (RGH-188). Preliminary top-line results were presented from a phase III study that was conducted in patients with acute mania associated with bipolar I disorder. Results from the five-week multi-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study showed that patients in the cariprazine arm experienced significant symptom improvement compared to patients in the placebo arm. The improvement was observed as early as the fifth day of treatment and at each subsequent time point studied. Cariprazine, a novel, orally active D2/D3 antagonist, was generally well tolerated. However, discontinuations due to adverse events were higher in the cariprazine arms compared to placebo. Forest Labs intends to analyze the data further. By the end of the week we should have a very good handle on just how weak or strong this earnings season will be. The firms reporting next week read like a who’s who of American industry. They.include: Abbott Labs (ABT), Apple (AAPL), Automatic Data Processing (ADP), AT&T (T), Boeing (BA), Bristol Myers (BMY), Caterpillar (CAT), CSX (CSX), Chevron (CVX), Colgate Palmolive (CL), Conoco Phillips (COP – Analyst Report) and DuPont (DD) – and that is just in the first four letters of the alphabet!
by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, January 18, 2012: Issue #1689 The workers at the restaurants and bars around Union Square in San Francisco have likely just about caught their breath. The 10,000 or so businesspeople who descended on the neighborhood for the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference drank their fill of Patron, ate a few tons of filets and guzzled thousands of gallons of Starbucks coffee. What makes the conference such a big deal is that it’s the largest and most important investor event of the year in the healthcare sector. There are other healthcare conferences put on by investment banks, but nothing comes close to the quality and number of companies and attendees at JPM. There were two important takeaways that emerged from the conference – themes

As the year winds down, here are my thoughts for what lies ahead in 2012 for income investors. Prediction #1: The “Crowded Trade” Chatter Heats Up Many Wall Street pros are scoffing at buying stocks with solid dividends. I believe this is for two reasons: The first is that in order for the Wall Street machine to make money, and that includes the financial media, you need to be trading constantly, generating commissions and hanging onto every word as to which stocks will go higher and which are going to tank. If you’re investing in dividend paying stocks, chances are

They’re terrific students, work hard and always bring home good grades. However, it’s always a little nerve-wracking to tabulate my own report card based on my market calls at the end of the year. The market isn’t nearly as forgiving as a second grade teacher. But nevertheless, it’s an important exercise to see what I got right and what I got wrong… what I may have been a little “early” on. So here goes: In my January 14 column, I talked about the rising trend of healthcare information technology and said two of my favorite stocks in the space were AthenaHealth (Nasdaq: ATHN) and McKesson (NYSE: MCK).

The spate of acquisitions in the pharma industry continues in 2012 with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) announcing the first major deal of the new year. Major merger and acquisition (M&A) deals have taken place in the pharma sector over the last couple of years. With most of the big pharma players already facing or likely to face generic threats to their key products, the companies are resorting to M&As and in-licensing deals to counter the loss of revenues that will arise following the genericization of its key drugs. Pharma major Bristol-Myers is no exception as the generic threat looms over many of its key drugs, including the blockbuster blood-thinner Plavix, co-developed with Sanofi (SNY). Bristol-Myers is looking to combat the generic threat through partnering deals and acquisitions, and is introducing

With 2011 coming to an end, the pharmaceutical industry continues to face challenges like sluggish prescription trends, EU pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition, pipeline failures and limited late-stage catalysts. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. All these factors will lead to a slowdown in global pharmaceutical market growth in the next five years, with major revenue-generating drugs like Lipitor, Plavix, Lexapro and Zyprexa losing exclusivity. In fact, by the end of 2011, drugs worth more than a total of $30 billion will lose patent protection. This includes drugs like Lipitor, Zyprexa and Levaquin. The effect of the genericization of these products will be felt mostly in 2012, which will be a challenging year for several companies. At the

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) recently suffered a pipeline setback with its oncology candidate, brivanib, performing disappointingly in a late-stage study (BRISK-PS). The study evaluated brivanib as a combination therapy in liver cancer patients who had either failed or were intolerant to Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. / Bayer’s (ONXX/BAYRY) Nexavar. Results from the multicenter, double-blind, randomized study revealed that there was no improvement in the overall survival rate for patients treated with brivanib and the best supportive care (BSC) versus those in the placebo plus BSC arm. Bristol-Myers intends to present detailed data from the study at an upcoming scientific conference. The disappointing results of the BRISK-PS study notwithstanding, Bristol-Myers intends to continue evaluating the liver cancer candidate in three other late-stage studies. Bristol-Myers stated that it has conducted 29 studies till

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, December 20, 2011: Issue #1668 I’m excited when my kids bring home their report cards.

AstraZeneca (AZN) and its partner Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) announced recently that Komboglyze has been approved by the European Commission (EC) in European Union (EU). Komboglyze is a combination of Onglyza (saxagliptin), a DPP-4 inhibitor and metformin, a generic drug for type II diabetes. AstraZeneca has co-developed Onglyza with Bristol-Myers. The EC cleared Komboglyze as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults suffering from type II diabetes. Komboglyze is indicated for patients who show inadequate response to the maximum tolerated dose of metformin alone or those already being treated with the combination of Onglyza and metformin as separate tablets. Komboglyze is expected to provide single pill dosing convenience to patients currently taking Onglyza and metformin seperately.
According to Irish orator, philosopher, & politician Edmund Burke, change is the most powerful law of nature. The winds of change seem to be sweeping across the pharmaceutical industry as well. Until recently, most commercialization efforts were focused on the U.S. — the largest pharmaceutical market — along with Europe and Japan. However, with factors like pricing pressure in the European Union (EU) and intensifying generic competition affecting sales in large pharmaceutical markets, many leading players in the pharmaceutical space such as Pfizer (PFE), Bristol – Myers Squibb Company (BMY), Merck (MRK), Eli Lilly (LLY), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Astra Zeneca (AZN) and Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), have shifted their focus on emerging (“pharmerging”) markets. The key emerging markets targeted by big players in the pharmaceutical space (aka “Big Pharma”) include China, Russia, Brazil,

Is the hepatitis-C market the next Mecca for the pharma/biotech sector? It seems so if we go by the flurry of activity and heightened interest in this market in the past few quarters. The hepatitis-C virus (HCV) market seems to have caught the eye of several pharma/biotech companies – as evident by the deals being signed for the development of drugs for the treatment of HCV. We are talking about the recent announcements made by big players like Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (GILD). All three companies have made it clear they want a piece of the HCV market pie. Johnson & Johnson’s Tibotec Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb recently announced that they have decided to join forces for the development of Bristol-Myers’ daclatasvir (BMS-790052)

Recently, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) presented encouraging data from a phase II study (n=48) which evaluated its candidate BMS-790052 in combination with peginterferon and ribavirin (standards of care) for treating patients suffering from the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Bristol-Myers presented data from the mid-stage study at the 51st interscience conference on antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy held in the US. The double-blind study evaluated BMS-790052 at three doses (3 mg, 10 mg or 60 mg) in treatment-naïve patients infected with genotype 1 chronic HCV. Results from the study revealed that the rate of SVR24 (sustained virologic response – absence of detectable HCV at 24 weeks post treatment ) achieved by patients treated with a combination of BMS-790052, PEG-interferon alfa and ribavirin was higher across all evaluated doses than those receiving placebo

AstraZeneca plc (AZN) recently announced the US launch of Brilinta (ticagrelor). The drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month, to reduce the rate of heart attack and cardiovascular (CV) death in adult patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Following the launch, AstraZeneca plans to work with distribution partners and pharmacy customers to ensure that Brilinta is readily available for use. The regulatory body’s approval was based on the PLATO study, which compared Brilinta to clopidogrel in 18,624 patients suffering from ACS. The study demonstrated that there was no statistical difference in adverse reactions observed among patients treated with Brilinta, compared to those treated with clopidogrel. Clopidogrel, which is marketed worldwide by Bristol-Myers Squibb & Co. (BMY) and Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) under the brand name Plavix,

The cardiac rhythm disorder is referred to as atrial fibrillation (AF). Bristol-Myers and Pfizer presented detailed data from the study at the European Society of Cardiology. Topline results were presented in June 2011. Apixaban will be marketed under the trade name Eliquis in the EU. The same trade name has been proposed in the US. Data from the randomized, double-blind, multicenter study revealed that Eliquis was non-inferior to the standard therapy warfarin in reducing the risk of stroke or systemic embolism.
Recently, the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) of China delivered a boost to Simcere Pharmaceutical Group (SCR) by clearing its drug Iremod, for treating patients suffering from active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Iremod, developed solely by Simcere, will be the first Iguratimod drug to hit the global market and will be used mainly to treat patients suffering from active RA. Iguratimod refers to a new disease-modifying, anti-rheumatoid therapy and belongs to the category of Disease Modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs). The approval of Iremod by the Chinese regulatory authorities will not only boost Simcere’s top line but also widen the treatment options for patients suffering from the dreaded disease, whose incidence is on the rise.
by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, August 17, 2011: Issue #1580 The market’s violent sell-off over the past two weeks took down many good stocks along with the bad ones. Even with the quick bounce, quality companies are still trading at steep discounts to where they were just two weeks ago and are now at very attractive valuations. This is especially true in the healthcare sector, where names like Gilead Sciences (Nasdaq: GILD), which is down 12 percent, are still below where they were trading prior to the debt crisis decline. Whether the United States’ debt is rated AAA or AA+ should have no bearing on sales of Gilead’s leading HIV drugs or whether its newest drug, Quad, will receive FDA approval. The stock trades at just 11.2 times

We recently downgraded our recommendation on Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ONXX) to Underperform from Neutral. We note that Onyx Pharma’s second quarter 2011 loss of 56 cents was well below expectations, mainly due to lower revenues and higher operating expenses. Despite improved sales of the company’s only marketed drug, Nexavar (sorafenib) for cancer, which came in at $245.7 million (up 4% year-over-year) during the quarter, Onyx Pharma’s revenues experienced a 1.2% decline, amounting to $68.0 million. Earnings were further reduced as a result of higher-than-expected operating expenses. While research and development (R&D) spend went up 16.2% to $50.3 million, selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses shot up 43.6% to $38.2 million. Increased expenses for the development of carfilzomib led to higher R&D spend and an increase in employee headcount and related

Recently, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) inked a deal with Mylan Inc. (MYL) to expand the market for its HIV drug Reyataz (atazanavir sulfate). The deal allows Matrix to develop and sell the generic version of the HIV therapy in the Indian and sub-Saharan African markets. Apart from Reyataz, Mylan will also sell the generic versions of other Bristol-Myers HIV therapies such as Videx (didanosine) and Zerit (stavudine) in the above territories as per the agreement. The transaction marks the fifteenth deal signed by Bristol-Myers in the field of HIV and the fourth deal involving Reyataz. The deal also promises the pediatric versions of the HIV therapies.
Amgen (AMGN) recently announced that it received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for a label expansion for its oncology product, Vectibix. Amgen is looking to gain EU approval for the use of Vectibix in patients with wild-type KRAS metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) as a first-line treatment in combination with FOLFOX and second-line treatment in combination with FOLFIRI in patients who have received first-line fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy (excluding irinotecan). The CHMP had previously adopted a negative opinion regarding Amgen’s marketing authorization application for Vectibix’ label expansion. Amgen filed an appeal against the decision in March 2011 requesting the EMA to re-examine the CHMP’s opinion. Data from the two 24-week studies, which evaluated adults suffering from type II diabetes, were presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions. Data from the studies revealed that there was a significant reduction in blood sugar levels in patients treated with dapagliflozin and metformin XR versus those treated with dapagliflozin or metformin XR alone and placebo. Moreover, no major events related to hypoglycemia were reported in the studies. Hypoglycemia refers to the situation of abnormally low levels of glucose in the blood. This cardiac rhythm disorder is referred to as atrial fibrillation (AF). Apixaban will be marketed under the trade name Eliquis in the EU. The same trade name has been proposed in the US and other countries. Top-line results from the double-blind, multicenter study revealed that Eliquis was non-inferior to the standard therapy warfarin with respect to the combined outcome of stroke and systemic embolism. Data further revealed that Eliquis was superior to warfarin with respect to effectiveness and major bleeding. We remind investors that Bristol-Myers has succeeded in getting the drug approved in the US for the indication in its second attempt. In the second quarter of 2010, the FDA issued a complete response letter in response to biologic license application (BLA) submitted by the pharma major for Nulojix , asking for additional information. Subsequently, Bristol-Myers submitted it. In December 2010, the agency had thereby announced that it would review the re-submitted application by June 15, 2011 (action date). The agency cleared the drug following the review thereby delivering a further boost to the company. We note that the

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) received a boost when its blood-thinner Eliquis (apixaban) was cleared by the European Commission (EC) in 27 nations of the European Union (EU) for preventing venous thromboembolic events (VTE) in adults who have undergone elective hip or knee replacement surgery. The approval by the EC is the first approval for Eliquis, a new oral direct factor Xa inhibitor. Bristol-Myers has co-developed the drug with Pfizer (PFE). The approval was based on ADVANCE-2 and ADVANCE-3 studies which revealed that the drug was statistically superior to 40 mg once-daily Lovenox (enoxaparin) of Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) without increase in bleeding rates. The decision of the EC to approve Eliquis does not surprise us since the drug had won a positive recommendation from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use

Challenges like sluggish prescription trends, EU pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition, pipeline failures and limited late-stage catalysts continue to impact the pharmaceutical industry. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. All these factors will lead to a slowdown in global pharmaceutical market growth in the next five years. Products like Lipitor, Plavix, Lexapro and Zyprexa are expected to face generic competition over the next five years. In fact, 2011 itself will see drugs worth more than $30 billion losing patent protection. This includes drugs like Lipitor, Zyprexa and Levaquin. The effect of the genericization of these products will be felt mostly in 2012, which will be a challenging year for several companies. At the same time, new products are

The once-weekly injectable drug has been approved by the US regulatory body for subcutaneous use. Sylatron has been approved as an additional therapy to treat skin cancer patients (with microscopic or gross nodal involvement) within 84 days of surgery including the removal of lymph nodes. The US agency has cleared Sylatron on the basis of data from the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) study (n=1,256). The drug is prohibited for treating patients who are historically allergic to peginterferon alfa-2b or interferon alfa-2b. Moreover, the drug has not been cleared to treat skin-cancer patients suffering from autoimmune hepatitis and also those affected by hepatic decompensation.

The company has requested the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to re-examine CHMP’s opinion. Negative Opinion Issued in March 2011 The CHMP had adopted a negative opinion regarding Amgen’s marketing authorization application for Vectibix’s label expansion in March 2011. At that time, Amgen had said that it would appeal the opinion. Results from two studies (PRIME and ‘181) showed that Vectibix plus chemotherapy improved progression-free survival in patients with wild-type KRAS mCRC compared to only chemotherapy.
Recently, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) received a boost with the European Commission (EC) approving Baraclude (entecavir) for an additional indication. The current approval by the European regulatory authorities allows Bristol-Myers to market Baraclude in 27 nations of the European Union for treating adults suffering from chronic hepatitis B (CHB) with decompensated liver disease. The US clearance for Baraclude for the same indication came in October 2010. Decompensated liver disease leads to improper functioning of the liver due to severe scarring of the organ and often needing liver transplantation. Approximately, 350 million people are infected by the CHB virus across the globe. The European approval for the additional indication was based on encouraging safety and efficacy data from a randomised, open-label, multi-centre study (ETV-048) study. Data from the study revealed that

The pharmaceutical industry continues to witness major challenges like sluggish prescription trends, EU pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition, pipeline failures and limited late-stage catalysts. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. According to IMS Health, this is the main reason global pharmaceutical market growth will be restricted to the mid-single digits (5-8%) through 2014. Over the next five years, products that currently generate more than $142 billion in sales are expected to face generic competition, including Lipitor, Plavix and Zyprexa. In fact, 2011 itself will see products worth more than $30 billion losing patent protection. This includes products like Lipitor, Plavix, Zyprexa and Levaquin. These products generated more than $15 billion in sales in 2010. The effect of the
