Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is scheduled to report its first quarter fiscal 2012 results on April 26, 2012. We witness both downward and upward movements in analyst estimates in the build-up to the release. Prior-Quarter Synopsis Amazon reported weak fourth-quarter revenue, but earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 24 cents, or 150%, on improved operating margins and a lower share count. The company reported revenues of $17.43 billion, up 60.3% sequentially and 34.6% year over year (in the middle of management’s guided range but missing Consensus expectations by around 4.3%). Key strategies for driving revenue growth were competitive pricing, free shipping, user experience on Amazon properties and the Amazon Prime program. The gross margin shrunk 280 bps sequentially to 20.7%, but was up 34 bps from the year-ago quarter. The

StratusGroup primarily offers UV flexography, UV offset, UV rotary, digital and conventional offset for a range of custom products, including folding carton, insert and multi-pack. The company also offers labeling solutions for bottles. StratusGroup boasts a large clientele including alcoholic beverage company Seagram.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Wednesday, August 3, 2011 While Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) grab most of the headlines these days, Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) lingers like a sleeping giant. But not for long. What Amazon has planned could challenge both tech giants in one fell swoop. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that Amazon will release a tablet PC by October. As more details emerge, we get a clearer picture of what Amazon will offer. Some of the biggest developments are the new additions to Amazon’s video streaming service. It was reported Thursday that Amazon closed a deal with NBCUniversal for streaming video rights, after reaching a similar deal with CBS (NYSE: CBS) last week. Amazon currently offers unlimited streaming of its digital content

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) has announced that it will acquire UK-based online bookseller, The Book Depository International. The acquisition will add over six million titles to Amazon’s already large stock of books. The cost of the transaction was not revealed and the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. It is unclear whether The Book Depository will retain its individuality and continue to operate as a separate website or if it will be folded into Amazon.com. But in any case, Amazon will reduce its competition in the e-commerce market as the Book Depository is one of its major rivals. Amazon has an internationally focused website in the United Kingdom and the acquisition of The Book Depository should allow it to increase its exposure in the European market. But now Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is making it even harder… The company recently changed its app policy so that e-book sellers must now hand over a 30 percent cut of all sales made on Apple devices.
Markets greeted investors with New Year wishes as they closed higher and major benchmarks set new records on Monday. Robust growth in manufacturing and a better-than-expected construction spending report helped the indices post significant gains. Investors can take lot of heart from this positive start as historical data suggests that markets opening up with gains usually leads to a successful year. According to reports from the Institute for supply Management, manufacturing data sprung higher with the new-orders index posting higher results. The manufacturing sector also jumped for the 17th consecutive month in December. Additionally, data on the global front suggested that China’s inflation may subside after a slowdown in the manufacturing sector while Europe’s manufacturing sector posted better-than-expected growth during the last month. In addition, construction spending increased for the

by Alexander Moschina, Investment U Research Editor’s Note: This article comes from Alex Moschina, who’s filling in for Martin Denholm for a few weeks. At such a vital time of year for retailers, he takes a look at the upcoming earnings prospects for mammoth online giant, Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) * * * * * * * Without doubt, this is the most critical time for retailers, no matter whether they’re the traditional bricks-and-mortar ones, or online stores. Given that, I thought I’d follow up on Martin’s recent article about Amazon to discuss the fourth quarter prospects for this e-commerce giant. And if history is any guide, we should expect an upside surprise on the $13.3 billion in sales that Amazon’s management has projected for the October-December period. After all, Q4

Google Inc’s (GOOG) online bookstore is likely to hasten the digitization of paperbacks and hard covers, dramatically increasing the availability of online books. In addition to the 200,000 odd titles from leading publishers, such as Random House, Penguin Group, Simon & Schuster and Pearson, the company is also offering 2.8 million out-of-print books where copyrights may or may not have expired. Google is entangled in legal warfare there, although it has not asked for sole distributorship. Google will be splitting ebook profits in a couple of ways. The first is through the agency model (most of the top publishers prefer this). Here the publisher fixes the price, keeps 70% of the returns and Google keeps the balance. For sales not based on the agency model, Google intends to fix prices

The story was first published by the Wall Street Journal. The plan is to make books easily searchable by mentioning the title in the search box, which would among other links, also provide the link to the Google Editions version of the book. Users would be able to preview a section of the book if they prefer, before clicking to make an immediate purchase. Therefore, the Google service would be available on any connected device Incorporatedluding ebook readers from top competitors Apple Inc (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), or Barnes & Noble Inc (BKS) through Google Editions apps.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) has decided to postpone the launch of its iPad in international markets to the end of May 2010 (initially expected to be launched by the end of April). The company cited strong U.S. demand, which exceeded supply, as the reason for the postponement. The company is expected to announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on May 10. International markets have become an important driver of growth for AAPL as it has increased its presence in international markets via iPhones and iPods. International sales accounted for 58% of total revenue in the first quarter of 2010 (most recent quarter) compared to 46% of total revenue in the first quarter of 2009. Apple’s shares are now trading at an all-time high, as investors are more focused on

So users could download the app just as easily as Apple’s own e-book software called iBooks. This follows the launch of the Kindle app for Macs a few days ago. The Kindle app for the tablet is an app with a difference. It takes care of aesthetics, such as background color and brightness and combines this with practical requirements, such as note-making, highlighting, and viewing notes and highlights created on other Kindle software. The Whispersync technology also records the last page read, so a person reading on a Kindle or iPhone could easily access this page when switching to a PC or tablet. Our outlook is reflected by the stock’s Zacks Rank #3. The company’s third-quarter earnings beat the Zacks consensus estimate by 3 cents, although revenue was more or less in-line, beating the consensus by 2.1%. Texas Instruments also reported double-digit bookings growth, resulting in a much stronger backlog. The company’s restructuring activities have lowered the cost structure, which along with higher utilization and better product mix, enabled Texas Instruments to generate the third quarter earnings surprise. Last month, Texas Instruments also raised its guidance. This prompted 7 of the 37 analysts covering the stock to raise their estimates for the fourth quarter. The number of

As we had seen with the monthly retail sales numbers in the recent past, the retail picture may not be as bad as the dismal labor market would indicate. In a happy development for some if not all retailers, retail sales data released this morning indicates that consumers spent 3.6% more on holiday shopping this year between the critical Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve period than they did last year. The retail sales period in question had an extra day this year. And last year’s holiday shopping season was particularly bad, when overall sales dropped 3.4% amid a very uncertain financial backdrop. Despite these caveats, today’s retail sales numbers are positive and welcome. They add to the growing list of favorable newsflow on improving fundamentals of the underlying economy.
Amazon.com’s (AMZN) Kindle seems to be the only popular e-reader currently available in sufficient volume. Barnes & Noble (BKS) recently sent out an email to customers who had pre-ordered their Nook e-reader, stating that they would not be able to meet the fulfillment schedule. Therefore, some customers who had expected the device by Christmas will now have to wait for Dec. 29. Of course, BKS is well aware that the stakes are high, so it has decided to offer a $100 gift certificate to customers that did not receive the e-reader by Dec 24. This is a significant amount, considering the $259 price tag on the Nook is same as the Amazon Kindle. The Nook is actually being offered ahead of schedule in an attempt to make use of the

The economic downturn has weighed heavily on the fortunes of the Consumer Electronics industry. Consumer electronics sales stagnated in 2008 and through most of 2009 as a result of the deteriorating economic conditions in the U.S. With little to no revenue growth, consumer electronics companies have been resorting to cost-cutting and share repurchases to drive bottom-line growth. In the first half of 2009, 50% of the world’s electronic equipment makers experienced revenue declines. Inventory drawdown from last year further impacted volumes in major consumer electronics categories. The recession hit the consumer electronics industry in the back half of 2008, pulling down annual revenue numbers. The average U.S. household spent $1,229 on consumer electronics in 2008, a 12.5% decline from 2007. All consumer electronics companies witnessed significant gross margin declines, as

We have upgraded Amazon.com (AMZN) to Outperform based on indications that the company’s sales in the holiday season will be much stronger than we had originally expected. The shares have jumped 7.0% over the past week and were up 2.7% yesterday since we upgraded the stock. We believe there is further upside and encourage investors to accumulate shares. Marketing firm Mercent reported that Amazon.com saw a 47% sales increase in November, versus 33% increase for the overall online shopping market. According to SpendingPulse, the e-commerce industry rose 12.3% in November. Overall, electronic goods witnessed the strongest growth, with revenue increasing 6.6% followed by jewelry, which was up 4.6%. Amazon’s e-reader, Kindle, is doing particularly well. Kindle has benefited from the non-availability of competing products, such as Barnes & Noble’s (BKS)

by Tony Daltorio, Research, Investment U There is a thrilling, real-life business drama being written as you read this article; a drama revolving around the battle for dominance in the electronic books industry. Some of the major “characters” in this story include: Sony ADR (NYSE: SNE), the company that pioneered the market; Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN), which brings in most of its business through selling books; and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), the proverbial “800 pond giant” that may end up dominating the industry in the end… despite having yet to enter it. It’s quite a cast of characters for investors to choose among. Nothing beats a good book, so we’ll take a “read” on the market for electronic books and electronic book readers. and see if any of the chapters contain profitable

A sharp rebound in Chinese shares helped erase yesterday’s slump and sent Asian stocks sharply higher Thursday, a day after Shanghai’s big fall ignited fears of a Chinese stock collapse and triggered a selling spree around the world. Asian markets also drew comfort from an overnight recovery on Wall Street after a surprise drop in U.S. crude stockpiles lifted hopes for an economic recovery and sent investors back on the buying table. Shanghai’s main index jumped 126 points, or 4.5%, to 2,911.58, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock average climbed 179.41 points, or 1.8%, to 10,383.41. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 374.63, or 2%, to 20,336.36. South Korea’s Kospi advanced 2% to 1,576.39.
