Best Buy Company Inc. (BBY) recently reported second quarter 2010 results, which included double-digit growth in the top-line, but a surprise double-digit drop in the bottom-line. Best Buy’s quarterly earnings of 37 cents per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 42 cents, and dropped 22.9% year-over-year from 48 cents. Net earnings fell 21.8% to $158 million, due to the rise in cost of goods sold (up 12.4%), SG&A expenses (up 17.7%), higher effective tax rate (42.8% versus 37.3% in the year-ago quarter), and the strong dollar. Best Buy has gradually gained market share after its main rival Circuit City went out of business. BBY’s domestic market share rose 2.7% in the quarter. Notebook computers, phones and flat-panel TVs were the strongest categories, but were offset by softness in gaming,

Retail sales rose a stronger-than-expected 2.7% in August. The consensus expectation was for a rise of 1.9%. Most of the gain was due to the Cash for Clunkers program, which led to a 10.6% rise in sales at auto dealers. However, even stripping out autos it was a stronger-than-expected report, up 1.1% versus expectations of a 0.4% rise. On a year-over-year basis, total retail sales are down 5.3% and, excluding autos, they are down 6.2%. Autos are down 1.0% on a year-over-year basis. Keep in mind that a year ago retail sales started to fall off a cliff following the financial meltdown. Therefore, going forward the comparisons are going to start to look very easy. As the graph below (from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/) shows, it looks like the retail worm has turned.

The print App software is designed to work with HP’s high-end printers. To improve the speed and reduce cost of digital printing, the company had earlier unveiled graphic arts technologies and products to support its Print 2.0 strategy. The stores will be opened in Virginia, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, California, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico, Arkansas, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Louisiana. Currently, Best Buy operates 1,044 U.S. stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico. The company added 21 stores in the first six months of the fiscal year 2010. It opened 9 stores in the first quarter and another 12 stores in the second quarter. Best Buy’s pace of opening new stores in the current fiscal year is substantially low compared to prior year quarters.
Retail sales in July were much lower than expected. Total sales fell by 0.1%, far below the 0.8% increase forecast by the consensus of economists and the 0.8% increase that was posted in June. The one piece of good news in the report was that the June number was revised up from a 0.6% increase. If autos are excluded, sales fell 0.6% versus the expected increase of 0.1% and well below the 0.5% increase in June (originally reported as up 0.3%). The government auto sales numbers (up 2.4% from June, following a 1.9% increase the previous month) were well below what was indicated by the unit sales numbers coming from auto companies like Ford (F), General Motors and Toyota (TM). However, the “Cash for Clunkers” surge was right at the

Yesterday, Microsoft (MSFT) announced the sale of Razorfish, the digital advertising firm it received as part of the aQuantive acquisition in 2007. The consideration to be paid by Publicis Group, the acquirer, is around $530 million, partly in the form of cash and partly in 6.5 million Publicis Groupe treasury shares. The agreement creates a win-win situation. Publicis Groupe gets to acquire a digital advertising company, which effectively transforms a quarter of its business to the digital model. With Internet usage increasing the world over, digital advertising is assuming increasing importance in today’s world. The price is also reasonable, given that the company generated around $400 million in revenues in 2008, and is expected to generate $360-370 million in 2009. The revenue decline is recession-related and does not indicate loss

Inventory drawdown from last year had an impact in the fourth quarter 2009 and the first quarter of this year so product volume in the major areas was down year to year. However, it appears that the worst is over as demand for computers and Flat Panel Display TVs is showing more strength than would be expected on a seasonal basis. But the problems of the worldwide recession had caused some companies to reduce production and some shortages will occur over the next few months. These include DVD and CD drives (since optical pick-up heads are in short supply); HDD drives for notebooks and LCD glass panels. PC demand is picking up in the
