The showroom spread out in an area of 36,000 square feet will offer both branded and private label merchandise.
We retain our long-term Neutral recommendation on Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY), a leading operator of merchandise and home furnishing stores in the U.S. The company posted strong third-quarter earnings per share while raising its guidance for fiscal 2011. However, concerns regarding a sluggish recovery in the economy coupled with intense competition from specialty stores and mass merchandisers remain, threatening the company’s bottom-line. Bed Bath’s third-quarter earnings per share of 95 cents, which is the eleventh consecutive beat, handily surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 88 cents and was up 28% from the year-ago quarter. The improved results were attributable to strong sales and higher margins. The company’s lower payroll and occupancy expenses as a percentage of net sales led to lower selling, general and administrative expenses, eventually resulting

Major indices of the American stock markets closed flat on Wednesday after experiencing a strong rally on the first trading day of the Year. Euro zone worries were not strong enough for markets to move southwards. Retail stocks surged after Christmas sales figures increased 5.3% on a year over year basis. The Dow Jones Industrial average (DJIA) gained a meager 0.17% or 21.04 points to close at 12,418.42. The tech laden Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.01% to end the day at 2,648.36. The Standard & Poor 500 moved up 0.02% or 0.24 points to finish at 1,277.30, with health care and telecom sector stocks faring the worst and consumer-discretionary items emerging as gainers. The CBOE Volatility Index, widely considered to be the fear gauge of the market, closed near 22.

Earnings Preview 12/16/11 There will only be a handful of firms reporting next week as the third quarter reporting season is almost over. A total of just 34 firms are scheduled to report, including 13 of the S&P 500. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. While few in number, some of the reports come from firms that are highly significant in that they will give clues to the overall direction of earnings in the fourth quarter. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). There will, however, be plenty of economic data for the market to chew on.

The National Retail Federation (“NRF”), an industry trade group, projects a 2.8% growth in sales, amounting to $465.6 billion, during the current November to December holiday season, lower than the 5.2% rise in the corresponding period of the previous year. Online retail may increase 15% to touch $37.6 billion. These estimates reveal a rebound in consumer expenditure, which amounts to about 70% of the U.S. economy. Brick-and-mortar retailers ran extended hours post Thanksgiving in order to snatch some business from Internet retailers who continue to grow at a brisk pace. The growth trajectory of online sellers remains intact despite huge destruction of consumer wealth during the financial crisis in 2008 and tepid recovery since then. On the other hand, retail icons for middle-class shoppers, J. C. Penney Company (JCP) and

Industry Rank Analysis 11-15-11 Before you know it, Christmas will be here. That is something that tends to bring retail front and center to the minds of investors. Rumors of the death of the U.S. consumer appear to be premature. Despite extremely low levels in the surveys of consumer confidence, people are still going out to shop. Personally I don’t like to rely on those surveys, because what people say to the poll takers is often very different from what they actually do. A wide variety of Retail industries are doing very well based on the Zacks Rank. In light of the second month in a row of surprisingly strong Retail Sales numbers, it looks like the retailers might continue to stay on top for a while. Also in the

Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY) recently reported better-than-expected second quarter 2009 results with a low single-digit growth in the top-line and a surprise double-digit rise in the bottom-line. The company’s quarterly earnings of 52 cents a share surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 48 cents, and jumped 13.0% year on year from 46 cents reported in the prior-year quarter. Results were favorably impacted by the uptick in sales as well as retailer’s effective cost management, which offset the slump in demand for home furnishings due to slowdown in the housing industry. Consequently, operating profit climbed by 18.5% to $222 million, whereas operating margin expanded 150 basis points to 11.6%. The houseware retailer continues to experience growth in the top-line due to the opening of new stores. After increasing 2.8%

Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (BBBY) posted strong first-quarter results in June that easily beat expectations, sending estimates higher as analysts revise their earnings projections. Company Description Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. operates a chain of retail stores specializing in domestic merchandise like linens and kitchenware. The company was founded in 1971 and has a market cap of $9 billion. The weak consumer environment has hurt many high-end discretionary retailers. But Bed Bath and Beyond has prospered due to its strong value proposition and emphasis on consumer necessities. That helped the company to solid first-quarter results, reported on June 24. Second-Quarter Results Sales were up 2.8% from last year to $1.65 billion. Earnings came in at 34 cents per share, 10 cents ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company

Total sales fell by 0.1%, far below the 0.8% increase forecast by the consensus of economists and the 0.8% increase that was posted in June. The one piece of good news in the report was that the June number was revised up from a 0.6% increase. If autos are excluded, sales fell 0.6% versus the expected increase of 0.1% and well below the 0.5% increase in June (originally reported as up 0.3%). The government auto sales numbers (up 2.4% from June, following a 1.9% increase the previous month) were well below what was indicated by the unit sales numbers coming from auto companies like Ford (F), General Motors and Toyota (TM).
Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) – Shoppers “Didn’t Have the Time.” This morning, Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) reported that December holiday sales were much less than expected. It comes on the heel of reports that Americans actually cut back holiday spending this year. Bed Bath & Beyond (Nasdaq: BBBY) reported lower sales as consumers clearly “did not have the time,” or the money. It joined a growing list of retailers who saw sales and income drop this Christmas. Retail outlets are having great difficulty maintaining their levels of profitability as consumers cut back – massive sales and promotions don’t seem to be doing the trick. And for investors looking to profit, the outlook doesn’t look good. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t companies with products that didn’t fly off the shelves.
