Itron Inc. (ITRI) recently announced the completion of the installation of more than 150,000 Itron gas meter communication modules in Greater Houston for a natural gas distribution subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy Inc. (CNP). The project will include a total of 1.2 million communication modules and will be completed by 2013. These meters can effectively do away with the necessity of entering the premises of customers to take the readings manually. These communication modules employ the radio transmitting devices attached to the CenterPoint Energy’s customers’ existing natural gas meters, enabling the collection of readings once a month by a mobile meter reading device mounted to a CenterPoint Energy vehicle. According to Itron, CenterPoint is an old and valued customer and Itron is looking forward to conferring the benefits of smart metering

Itron Inc. (ITRI) and Tropos Networks’ jointly developed Smart Grid solution has been chosen by Avista Corp. (AVA) as part of its $38 million Smart Grid Demonstration Project in the city of Pullman, Washington, and in a nearby locality of Albion. The sole objective of using automated smart technologies is to simplify the energy distribution system and increase the accountability, reliability and efficiency of the system. Besides, the system will also reduce the outage time, incorporate renewable energy sources, and offer customers solutions to monitor their energy usage. Itron’s OpenWay Integrated Cell Router and OpenWay 7320 wireless broadband router will be used for smart grid communications. Both incorporate Tropos’ GridCom, a wireless broadband technology. The network will connect smart meters and distribution automation devices, laying the foundation of cost-effective, reliable

Consumers Energy, the major subsidiary of CMS Energy (CMS) has got into an agreement to purchase the total renewable energy output produced by the Fremont Community Digester (“FCD”). The contract is in line with the utility’s commitment to increase spending in Michigan following the launch of new Pure Michigan Business Connect initiative in early June by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. CMS Energy will purchase approximately 380,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), or 19,000 MWh per year, of electricity from the FCD over the next 20 years at a cost of $55 million. The FCD’s electric output is estimated at 3.1 megawatts. The $22 million digester and electric generator of FCD is being built by NOVI Energy, Indus Energy and North Central Cooperative, and is expected to begin commercial operation in the summer

With the 10-year T-note yielding only 3.06%, those investors interested in getting income from their investments are in sort of a tough place. Dividend-paying stocks are a very good place to look for a replacement. One thing you know for sure is that the coupon payment on a 10-year note is not going to rise. A yield of 3.06% does not offer much of a cushion against inflation. What is inflation likely to average over the next 10 years? I have no idea, but based on the spread between the regular 10-year note, and the 10-year TIPS, the market is implicitly expecting a rate of about 2.50%, which is pretty much in line with the historical experience (Headline CPI) over the last 20 years of 2.57%. While core inflation is

DPL Inc.’s (DPL) unregulated subsidiary, DPL Energy Resources, will build a 60 kilowatt (kW) solar array at the Mound Advanced Technology Center in Miamisburg, a former Department of Energy Weapons site. Along with the company’s other solar installation on Yankee road, this project will help DPL meet the goals of Ohio’s energy legislation, which includes targets for generating electricity with renewable sources such as solar, wind and biofuels. After completion, the facility will generate enough power to provide electricity for five homes and will cost approximately $400,000. Melink Corporation of Cincinnati is the general contractor of the project, and the solar installation, which will be situated on a hillside at Mound, is expected to be completed by this summer.
