Recently, AstraZeneca (AZN) announced that US District Court for the District of Columbia has dismissed the lawsuit filed by the company against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). AstraZeneca had taken legal action against the FDA, challenging the agency’s decision to reject AstraZeneca’s Citizen Petitions. The Citizen Petitions were filed by the company for Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) and Seroquel XR. The Citizen Petitions were filed to bar the FDA from approving any generic versions of the drug that do not include warnings related to hyperglycemia and suicidality in its label. With this move, AstraZeneca was looking to delay the launch of generic versions of Seroquel considering the company has marketing exclusivity for the data associated with the hyperglycemia warning till December 2, 2012. Meanwhile, the UK High Court has

(TEVA) has been pretty active on the generic product launch front with the company launching several generic products in the last few weeks. Among recently launched generic products are Teva’s generic versions of Sanofi’s (SNY) high blood pressure drugs, Avapro and Avalide, AstraZeneca’s (AZN) schizophrenia treatment, Seroquel, and Forest Laboratories’ (FRX) Lexapro. While Teva will enjoy a 180-day period of marketing exclusivity where the generic launches of Avapro, Avalide and Lexapro are concerned, we note that other generic players like Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) and Mylan (MYL) have also launched their generic versions of Seroquel. As per IMS data, annual US sales of Avapro, Avalide, Seroquel, and Lexapro were $464 million, $124 million, $4.6 billion and $2.9 billion, respectively.
Healthcare reform could be a minefield for Big Pharma in the long run. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – less fondly known as “Obamacare” – was the big story to close out the month of March, as the Supreme Court officially took the case. In an effort to figure out which way the vote was going to swing, the media analyzed every word, pause and twitch the justices made. Though all of that heavy-duty analysis doesn’t actually prove anything; while the Court has likely already decided the healthcare mandate’s fate one way or the other, “We the People” probably won’t find out until June. Considering the political left’s repeated complaints about Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. and Deputy Attorney General Edwin S. Kneedler’s admittedly painful performance in explaining

The recent agreement with Cephalon is another attempt by Myriad Genetics (MYGN) to establish itself as a strong player in the companion diagnostic market. Cephalon is a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA). Under the agreement, Myriad will conduct BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation testing on patients with Bracanalysis before being enrolled in a phase I/II clinical study. Over the recent past, the company has entered into similar agreements with players such as Abbott (ABT), Astra Zeneca (AZN) and BioMarin Pharmaceuticals (BMRN) to provide companion diagnostic tests for clinical trial enrollment. Bracanalysis is Myriad’s flagship product, which analyzes the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes to assess a woman’s risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Moreover, the acquisition of RBM (Rules-Based Medicine), made in 2011 would better place Myriad in this arena on

Afinitor is not yet approved for the treatment of breast cancer. The pivotal late-stage study (BOLERO-2) evaluated the use of Afinitor in combination with Pfizer’s (PFE) Aromasin (a hormonal therapy) in postmenopausal women with metastatic breast cancer whose disease has progressed, despite treatment with hormonal therapies like Novartis’ Femara or AstraZeneca’s (AZN) Arimidex. The long-term data showed that Afinitor plus Aromasin expanded progression-free survival (PFS), or time, without causing tumor growth in patients, by more than two times versus Aromasin alone. Micromet’s third quarter 2011 loss per share came in at 21 cents (after adjusting for the change in fair value of warrants), wider than the year-ago loss of 13 cents per share (also adjusting for the change in fair value of warrants). Lower-than-expected revenues led to the wider loss in the quarter. Revenues at Micromet were down almost 33% from the prior-year period to $4.5 million in the third quarter of 2011 due to lower collaboration revenue.
According to Irish orator, philosopher, & politician Edmund Burke, change is the most powerful law of nature. The winds of change seem to be sweeping across the pharmaceutical industry as well. Until recently, most commercialization efforts were focused on the U.S. — the largest pharmaceutical market — along with Europe and Japan. However, with factors like pricing pressure in the European Union (EU) and intensifying generic competition affecting sales in large pharmaceutical markets, many leading players in the pharmaceutical space such as Pfizer (PFE), Bristol – Myers Squibb Company (BMY), Merck (MRK), Eli Lilly (LLY), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Astra Zeneca (AZN) and Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), have shifted their focus on emerging (“pharmerging”) markets.
Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (MNTA) and Novartis AG (NVS) filed a lawsuit against Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. (WPI) regarding the generic version of Sanofi-Aventis’ (SNY) Lovenox. The lawsuit was filed in United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The lawsuit claims that Amphastar Pharma’s generic Lovenox, which was approved by the US Food and Administration (FDA) on September 19, infringes two of Momenta’s US patents. Amphastar Pharma plans to launch generic Lovenox in the US in the fourth quarter of 2011. Lovenox is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis and prophylaxis of ischemic complications in unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction.
The pharmaceutical industry continues to be impacted by major issues such as sluggish prescription trends, European Union (EU) pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition and limited late-stage catalysts. The next five years are expected to witness a significant imbalance between new product launches and patent expirations. All these factors will lead to a slowdown in global pharmaceutical market growth in the next five years. Major revenue generating drugs like Lipitor, Plavix, Lexapro and Zyprexa are expected to confront generic competition over the next five years. In fact, revenues in excess of $30 billion are expected to be lost in 2011 itself due to key drugs like Lipitor and Zyprexa going off-patent. The impact of the genericization of these drugs will be felt significantly in 2012, which will be a challenging year

AstraZeneca plc (AZN) recently announced the US launch of Brilinta (ticagrelor). The drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month, to reduce the rate of heart attack and cardiovascular (CV) death in adult patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Following the launch, AstraZeneca plans to work with distribution partners and pharmacy customers to ensure that Brilinta is readily available for use. The regulatory body’s approval was based on the PLATO study, which compared Brilinta to clopidogrel in 18,624 patients suffering from ACS. The study demonstrated that there was no statistical difference in adverse reactions observed among patients treated with Brilinta, compared to those treated with clopidogrel. Watson Pharma’s second quarter earnings of $1.01 per share (excluding special items) outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny and the year-ago earnings by 18 cents.
Private equity firm Apax Partners and two Canadian pension funds are set to acquire leading medical technology company Kinetic Concepts (KCI). The deal, including Kinetic’s outstanding debt, is valued at approximately $6.3 billion. As an independent global partnership, Apax exclusively focuses on long-term investment in growth companies. The acquisition of Kinetic is part of Apax’s intention to support deals in the financial & business services, healthcare, media, retail & consumer and technology sectors. However, probably its budget doesn’t permit such a big acquisition at this point, so Apax teamed up with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) to get the deal done. As per the terms of the agreement, Kinetic’s shareholders will receive $68.50 in cash for each share of

We believe Micromet’s lead pipeline candidate, blinatumomab, holds tremendous potential in the treatment of Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Blinatumomub is one of the leading BiTE antibodies. BiTE antibodies represent a new class of antibodies that activate the T-cells of a patient’s immune system to eliminate cancer cells. The company is conducting a pivotal study of blinatumomab (MT103) in Europe in adults with minimal residual disease (MRD) positive B-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), also referred to as front-line ALL. The company also has a mid-stage study (n=20) of blinatumomab underway in adults suffering from relapsed or refractory B-precursor ALL. Micromet has presented encouraging data from both trials.
Par Pharmaceutical Companies, Inc. (PRX) is in for a strategic assessment as it announced restructuring plans for its branded drugs segment, Strativa Pharmaceuticals. The company will reduce its workforce by about 100 people as a result of the restructuring, which is expected to drive the Strativa business to profitability. The workforce reduction will help Par Pharma focus on its products, Megace ES and Nascobal. Consequently, in the second quarter of 2011, Par Pharma will incur one-time non-cash charges along with severance costs. The restructuring initiative is expected to generate operating expense savings of $8-$12 million for the rest of 2011. The company believes this initiative will boost Strativa to profitability in the near term. We expect the restructuring program to benefit the company, which witnessed a 20.9% drop in revenues

Myriad is confident of retaining the momentum recorded over the past few quarters going ahead through product portfolio expansion, targeting the companion diagnostic market and expansion into Europe. With respect to new products, Myriad aims to launch at least one new molecular diagnostic product each year. The company’s tenth product, slated for launch in the second half of 2011, will assist dermatopathologists in determining whether a patient’s mole is benign or a malignant melanoma. We are also encouraged by Myriad’s recent acquisition of Texas based, privately-held Rules-Based Medicine (RBM) for $80 million in cash. Data from the two 24-week studies, which evaluated adults suffering from type II diabetes, were presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions. Data from the studies revealed that there was a significant reduction in blood sugar levels in patients treated with dapagliflozin and metformin XR versus those treated with dapagliflozin or metformin XR alone and placebo. Moreover, no major events related to hypoglycemia were reported in the studies. Hypoglycemia refers to the situation of abnormally low levels of glucose in the blood. The group expects this grant to fund the development of a commercial multi-gene next generation sequencing test, which will provide comprehensive molecular profiles of tumors and identify treatment options. Life Technologies believes that the test will increase the speed and accuracy of cancer treatment. With the application of the next generation sequencing (NGS) and informatics, this genomic test will be commercially available in the global market. This program will attract additional pharmaceutical clinical trial investments in UK that should prove to be a major source of international investment.
Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) received a huge boost today when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed to pay for its lead prostate cancer vaccine Provenge. Provenge was approved in the US in April last year and is marketed since May 2010. It is currently reimbursed by all 15 local Medicare contractors. CMS issued the proposed decision memo for Dendreon’s potential blockbuster vaccine, Provenge, after conducting a scientific review of the evidence provided. The agency believes there is enough evidence to justify reimbursement for the approved label of the vaccine. CMS believes Provenge leads to improvement in health outcomes for men with advanced, castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and is clinically necessary, as per CMS.
AstraZeneca (AZN) recently gained US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its orphan drug vandetanib for the treatment of non-operable (unresectable) locally advanced or metastatic medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). The approval, however, comes with a boxed warning and a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). The boxed warning relates to QT prolongation, Torsades de pointes, and sudden death. Vandetanib’s approval was based on encouraging phase III data which showed that treatment with vandetanib resulted in a 65% reduction in the rate of disease progression compared to placebo. In addition to achieving the primary endpoint of progression-free survival, vandetanib also showed improvement compared to placebo in the secondary endpoints, which were objective response rate and disease control rate. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center study ZETA was conducted with 331 patients

The company had earned $0.47 per share in the year-ago quarter. On a reported basis (including special items), Bristol-Myers’ earnings in the reported quarter climbed 22% to $0.55 per share. Even though Bristol-Myers’ lead product Plavix and therapies indicated for HIV and hepatitis performed well in the quarter, the better than expected earnings were mainly driven by cost controls and lower taxes. Net sales in the reported quarter came in flat at $4.8 billion. Revenues were short of the Zacks Consensus revenue Estimate of $4.9 billion mainly because of lower sales of Abilify, approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and depression, cancer drug Erbitux and hypertension treatment Avapro. The

The company suffered a loss of 1 cent per share in the year-ago quarter. The wider loss was attributable to lower revenues and higher expenses incurred in the reported quarter. Total revenue in the reported quarter declined 9.8% to $106 million. Revenues fell well short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $114 million.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company’s (BMY) pipeline received a boost when its type II diabetes candidate, dapagliflozin, fared well in a late-stage multicenter, active-controlled, randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, study (n=814). The patients enrolled in the study, were above 18 years of age and had responded unsatisfactorily to treatment by metformin alone. Dapagliflozin, a once-daily pill, is being co-developed with AstraZeneca Plc (AZN) for treating patients suffering from type II diabetes which is characterized by the dysfunction of beta cells in the pancreas. This results in reduced insulin secretion thereby leading to elevated glucose levels. Results from the 52 week study, presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), revealed that a combination of dapagliflozin and metformin was as effective as the combination of glipizide and metformin in reducing blood sugar
