by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, May 26, 2011 Most investors think Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) deserves its monster stock valuation. After all, it did vanquish all of its foes on the technology battlefield. Take its breakout products: the iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air. All three have competitors gasping for air as they try to catch up. All the same, those successes have contributed to cloud computing, which is surprisingly aiding the industry laggards. Traditional tech companies like Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) stand to benefit greatly from the new trend. These companies’ recent numbers prove this latest technology wave has merit. Tech analyst Rob Enderle says they “reflect a massive push to the cloud.” Cloud Computing Market He’s right, too.
Just months after Microsoft Corp (MSFT) announced that it would design an operating system based on ARM Holdings’ (ARMH) chip technology, the company showcased its Windows 8 software. The decision marks Microsoft’s divergence from its traditional partner Intel Corp (INTC), which is also fighting its own battle in the mobile computing space. Intel started promoting its trademarked “ultrabook,” which it expects will enable notebook-makers to regain some of the market share it lost to Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPad. The devices are expected to be lighter and just slightly more expensive than Apple’s, while providing greater functionality. Intel executives stated that ultrabooks based on Intel’s new chips would sport an advanced touch screen, start in a few seconds, connect to the Internet almost immediately and have several days of battery life

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, May 12, 2011 Last week, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) said it made the biggest breakthrough in microprocessor design in recent history. It called its new chip the most significant advance since the 1950?s silicon transistor. The company expects to begin production later this year, using a revolutionary 3D technology it has worked on for nearly a decade. With these strides, Intel claims to be three years ahead of the competition. Regardless, the move is a significant one. Microchip transistors, the building blocks of electronics, are always produced in flat structures. But Intel’s breakthrough involves more complex, 3D models with circuit widths of 22 nanometers. Most industry insiders see this push as Intel’s attempt to fend off a major challenge from U.K. chip designer Arm

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

As promised, Intel Corp’s (INTC) acquisition of McAfee Inc was completed in the first quarter, following approval by both the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the European Union. The FTC had given its approval earlier, but clearance from the EU was received after Intel assured that the new products created as a result of the acquisition would also function with software from other security companies, such as Symantec Corp (SYMC). McAfee will operate as Intel’s wholly owned subsidiary and its results will be reported under the Software and Services Group. It will continue selling its products and services under the McAfee brand (at least for now). The agreement, which was announced in August last year was completely unexpected, taking both analysts and investors by surprise. Our detailed analysis is available

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Wednesday, January 12, 2011 The touchscreen tablet computer market is smoking hot these days. And with good reason. Consumers can’t seem to get enough of the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad. In response, companies everywhere are rushing to release their own versions of the breakthrough technology. Some of them will succeed; some will fail. But one way or the other, tablets are changing the dynamics of the entire technology sector. Microsoft’s Windows Falls Short… The situation looks grim for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) shareholders. The company tried to reach down into the tablet world… and fell short. That’s somewhat surprising. Especially considering that Microsoft pioneered keyboard-less computers [using a stylus] in the 2000s. Problem is, its Windows software is designed for full-powered PCs that are capable

However, this did not prevent it from beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate on both the top and bottom lines. Revenue and EPS beat by 4.4% and 9 cents (13.2%), respectively. Revenue Revenue of $19.95 billion was up 23.2% sequentially and 4.9% from last year. Windows 7, Office 2010 and Kinect were particularly strong. Management estimates that the PC market (units) was up 2-4% year over year, a significantly slower rate than the 9-11% growth witnessed in the September quarter. Microsoft stated that enterprise was stronger than consumer, similar to earnings reports from other technology majors, such as Intel Corp (INTC). Third Quarter Highlights Intel Corp’s third quarter earnings were slightly better than the company’s expectations, exceeding the Zacks Consensus by a couple of cents. Revenue was also more or less in line, helped by stronger demand from China and other emerging markets. However, management had lowered guidance significantly prior to the earnings announcement, so investor reaction was muted. Intel had misread the softness in the consumer computing market in North America.
by Matthew Weinschenk, Contributing Editor, Investment U Thursday, December 23, 2010: Issue #1414 Okay, I’m going to get right to the point here: In 2011, we’ll see a surge in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that will drive the market higher. If you want to profit from the merger mania, you just need one simple thing to get started: You need to think like a pro. You see, while professionals watch the M&A market with zeal, most individual investors treat it as an afterthought, believing that it’s too hard for “outsiders” to profit. However, that’s a long way from the truth. There are actually multiple ways to earn your share of the M&A market – and if you’re going to pick a year to start, 2011 should be the one.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Monday, October 25, 2010 Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) reported sales of only 4.2 million units in its most recent quarter. That disappointed some investors, who then took it out on the stock. But they forgot that iPad sales still look decent for an item only unveiled in January and introduced in April. Analysts still see Apple selling 13 to 16 million iPads this year. And keep in mind that the company’s highly successful iPhone sold less than 6 million units in its first full year. Apple marketed the iPad as a consumer entertainment device. Yet the product’s success has largely come from companies and corporate users. iPad Connects With Corporations Apple doesn’t break out corporate sales from its overall sales numbers. But a global survey

Intel Corp., (INTC) which recently acquired security-software maker McAfee Inc. (MFE) in a $7.68 billion transaction, is believed to be nearing a deal to acquire the wireless business of Infineon Technologies. Infineon, a German semiconductor company, is known for its processors used in smartphones made by Apple Inc. (AAPL), Nokia (NOK), Research In Motion (RIMM) and Samsung Electronics. The increased focus on the emerging mobile device market is perhaps Intel’s way of pre-empting a weakness in PC sales. In mature markets such as the U.K. and the U.S. PC demand is witnessing a shift to mobile computing devices. The Infineon wireless business, for its part, helps Intel get chips into mobile phones — an area where Intel has yet to make a mark. Samsung Electronics and Broadcom Inc.
Intel Corp. (INTC) announced yesterday that it would be acquiring McAfee Inc. (MFE), one of the largest makers of security software for $7.68 billion ($6.8 billion net of cash acquired) in an all-cash transaction. The purchase price of $48 a share represents a 60% premium to McAfee’s closing price on Wednesday (after which the deal was announced). Shares surged 57% yesterday, dropping off .06% after hours. This is overall a very good deal for existing McAfee shareholders, so they are expected to approve. Of course, regulatory approval will also be required, which may not be a problem, considering the fact that security software is not a market in which Intel competes. Intel also announced that it would be retaining key management personnel and running McAfee as a separate unit, similar

The world’s leading semiconductor intellectual property supplier, it operates a unique business model. The company designs and licenses intellectual property. And that sets it apart from the more typical focus on manufacturing and semiconductor chip sales. ARM Holdings designs microprocessors for low-powered gadgets. More than 95% of the world’s cell phones include its products, as does over 25% of all electronic devices. That includes digital cameras, power switches, industrial machinery and the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad. ARM has even been with the newly crowned “largest tech company” since its founding back in 1990. The British business has no apparent intention on slowing down anytime soon either. It continues to reach outward into devices such as smartcards, set-top boxes
