Bowing to the pressures of the sluggish market demand for coal, Patriot Coal Corporation (PCX) decided to lower the production of thermal coal. As a result, the company’s Freedom underground mine will remain idle. The mine, located in the Bluegrass complex in Illinois Basin, had produced 1.2 million tons of thermal coal in 2011. Subsequent to the production cut, there will be no uncommitted Illinois Basin thermal coal delivery for Patriot Coal in 2012. Idling of Freedom underground mine follows the idling of three other Central Appalachian thermal coal mines, which collectively produced 1.2 million tons of thermal coal in 2011, in the first quarter of 2012. Idling of these four mines along with the shut down of Big Mountain mining complex in February 2012, will lower the company’s 2012 total

Coal has been used for nearly as long as mankind has thrived. From the times of the cavemen to present day, coal is used for everything from cooking to heating to running steam-powered trains to generating electricity. Today, coal is burned as fuel or gasified to create a synthesis gas (syngas) that can then be used as a feedstock for the production of chemicals, fertilizer and electric power. Coal is also used for producing heat through combustion. The USA, Russia, Australia, China, India and South Africa have the largest coal reserves in the world. Coal is produced in 25 states in the US, spread across three coal-producing regions. The majority of the current production originates in just five states: Wyoming, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Montana. The importance of coal

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, December 21, 2011: Issue #1669 As my colleagues have done earlier this week, I’m now putting myself in the hot seat with regards to my prognostications from a year ago. Around this time last year, I opined that commodities like gold, silver, fertilizers, coal and oil were in increasingly short supply. Prices for these and other commodities were approaching 10-year highs, and would keep on rising. How did that statement pan out? Let’s take a look. Precious Metals According to data from Kitco, gold started the year around $1,400 per ounce, and is currently trading at just over $1,600 per ounce. Silver, on the other hand, started the year at $30.70 per ounce, and now trades a tad lower in the $29.50-per-ounce

Major indices gained during the trading day helped by an optimistic mood that prevailed among investors. The Dow Jones Industrial average (DJIA) surged 1.5% to close at 12,397.38. The Standard & Poor 500 rose 1.6% to finish at 1,277.06. The Nasdaq composite index gained 1.7% to end at 2,648.72. The fear gauge CBOE volatility index closed lower at 22.98. On the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), consolidated volumes were 3.9 billion. More than three stocks gained on the NYSE for every stock that declined. To the investor’s relief there was no discouraging news from the European front. In fact, data from Germany

This was offset in part by improved metallurgical coal shipments and robust met coal pricing. Going forward, increased regulation and alternate energy sources, specifically natural gas, continue to be major risks for coal miners like Arch Coal. Though we believe the company is well-capitalized, low-cost operations provide a competitive edge over smaller players in the industry, we move to an Underperform recommendation on Arch Coal due to the recent difficulties faced at the company’s PRB operations as well as the longwall outage at Mountain Laurel (Appalachia). Presently, the stock is trading at a premium to the peer group, based on 2012 earnings estimates. The trailing 12-month EV/EBITDA multiple is above the

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, October 6, 2011 Earlier, I talked about the 25-year outlook for liquid fuels based on the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) International Energy Outlook 2011. It’s the EIA’s annual 25-year energy forecast, and it contains important information for investors who are considering an investment in the energy sector. Now, I’ll cover the future of coal in the world energy picture. Many countries lack energy policies (including the United States) that restrict or otherwise limit the use of coal. As a result, the use of coal is projected to rise from about 139 quadrillion Btu in 2008 to 209 quadrillion Btu in 2035. That’s an average annual increase of 1.5 percent. Although coal power generations should decline in the United States, dramatic increases are

(CNX) provided guidance for coal exports in the range of 10 to 10.5 million tons for 2011, up from the initial coal exports outlook of 10 million tons. CONSOL Energy is quite confident that the export market will remain strong for the remainder of the year and hence retained its current-quarter production guidance of 14.4 to 14.8 million tons. CONSOL Energy has to draw more from its inventory level due to strong shipments in the quarter. The strong exports expectation from CONSOL Energy came in as a surprise, while its peer Alpha Natural Resources Inc.
The rebound phase for the coal industry from the 2008-2009 turmoil continued in 2011. The global economic outlook started improving following the turmoil of late 2008. The U.S. economy came out of the recession in the summer of 2009 and has been in a recovery mode since then, though the pace of improvement appears to have weakened lately. Like the other commodity sectors, the fortunes of the coal industry are closely tied to the health of the global economy. The post-recession demand recovery helped improve the group’s earnings power, with most coal companies solidly profitable in 2010. This uptrend in demand, largely driven by the improvement in the global economic activity, rebound in domestic power demand, favorable weather patterns and soaring coal demand from Asian countries, also continued into 2011.

The debt debate continues to steal the spotlight from earnings and economic reports. The stock market has lost ground in recent days due to this uncertain environment even as corporate earnings reports have broadly come ahead of expectations. With both sides in the debt debate sticking to their positions ahead of the Tuesday deadline, stocks will likely remain on edge today as well. The dismal GDP adds to the market’s woes. While the GDP report was expected to be on the soft side, the extent of the weakness and the negative revisions to the prior quarter’s numbers were very disappointing. The U.S. economy expanded at a lower-than-expected 1.3% rate in the second quarter, while the first quarter’s growth rate was sharply revised down to 0.4% from 1.9%. The facility has 48 workstations, some of which are already operational. The LA and NJ facilities, geared for manufacturing Provenge, now total 84. We believe the expanding manufacturing capacity will significantly increase the availability of Provenge which will help Dendreon to meet pent up demand for the vaccine.
Coal and natural gas company CONSOL Energy Inc. (CNX) announced the closure of its Mine 84, located near Washington, Pennsylvania. The company said the mine which had been in operation for decades producing thermal and metallurgical coal is no longer competitive. The company pointed out that the mine was idled in the first quarter of 2009. CONSOL Energy said the closure will incur total pre-tax charges of $116 million. Of the total cost, about $111 million will be non-cash while $5 million will result in future cash expenditures. Pre-tax cash savings from the closure is estimated to be around $18 million annually. This action forms a distinctive part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reallocate resources to more profitable coal operations and Marcellus shale drilling activities. Going forward, CONSOL will

(BTU) has signed an acquisition deal with Thiess Investments Pty Ltd to buy the remaining 5% joint venture interest in an Australian coal mine, the Burton Mine, for AU$35 million. It’s the largest exporter of thermal coal in the world, and business is booming, primarily due to demand from India and China. It turns out the coal export business is just as good for another country, half a world away from Indonesia. I’m talking about the good ol’ U.S.A. That’s right, coal exports are booming here, too. As you can see from the graph below, published by the EIA, coal export shipments are now at levels not seen in nearly two decades. This past year, they’ve been on an absolute tear, up 49 percent for the first quarter of 2011 compared to a year ago… The

Provenge was approved in the US in April last year and is marketed since May 2010. It is currently reimbursed by all 15 local Medicare contractors. Recent economic indicators suggest that the U.S. economy is regaining its stability, and sees a rebound in various industries — the coal industry being one of them. The emerging situation in Japan that has given the nuclear industry a black eye also is a net positive for the coal industry. The World Bank estimates global economic activity, as measured by gross domestic product (GDP), expanded 3.9% in 2010.
Arch Coal Inc. (ACI) and Great Northern Properties Limited Partnership (GNP) have entered into a coal lease agreement for all of GNP’s coal resources in the Otter Creek Tracts located in southeastern Montana. Following the agreement, Arch will own the right to mine about 9,600 acres (731 million tons) of GNP-owned minerals for a consideration of 10 cents per ton or $73.1 million, payable in equal annual installments over a period of five years. The 731 million tons of high-quality, low-cost, sub-bituminous coal reserves, which are low in sulfur dioxide content, are located in the Ashland coalfield southeast of Billings, Montana. The coal lease provides a future growth opportunity for Arch to build a significant position in the Northern Powder River Basin coal region. We believe investment in these low-ratio

It reported net income of 68 cents per share during the same period last year. Operating income declined to $48.3 million from $87.9 million a year ago due to lower price realizations in Central Appalachian region and higher operating costs in all regions.
Massey Energy Co. (MEE) the largest coal company in Central Appalachia, Virginia – announced third-quarter earnings of 19 cents per share, which was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, lower coal shipments and prices drove a 69% slump in earnings year over year. Revenues in the quarter plunged 6% year over year to $6.4 billion, reflecting a 15% drop in sales volumes and a 4% decline in prices. Metallurgical coal accounted for 22% of total shipments, down from 24% in third-quarter 2008. According to company estimates, a fire that destroyed a southern West Virginia preparation plant in August curtailed production by 300,000 tons during the quarter. Massey and its peers including Arch Coal Inc. (ACI), CONSOL Energy Inc. (CNX) and Peabody Energy Corp. (BTU) were impacted by the

Our near-term (6-18 months) outlook for the coal industry has improved somewhat from our previous neutral sentiment to a more positive undertone. Based off of various recent economic indicators, the U.S. economy appears to be stabilizing. Although the rest of 2009 is likely to continue on a path of weak steel and electricity demand relative to 2008 levels, several factors should help lift the coal producers in 2010. Reductions in capex spending from both coal and natural gas producers, the weakening of the U.S. dollar and most importantly Incorporatedreased steel and electricity consumption in 2010 should all be positive catalysts for the coal industry next year. As stated in earlier outlook summaries, benchmark metallurgical prices for fiscal 2009 have been set around $120/mt — off markedly from the $300/mt level

Arch Coal (ACI) recently extended the size and maturity of its senior secured revolving credit facility. The existing drawing limit under the credit line was raised to $860 million from $800 million through June 2011. From June 2011, the company will have borrowing right of $763 million through March 2013, which may further be raised up to $800 million. The credit line extension will strengthen Arch Coal’s liquidity position and provide greater financial flexibility to pursue attractive growth opportunities going forward. Last week, the company obtained clearance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for acquiring the Jacobs Ranch mine in Wyoming from Rio Tinto (RTP). The $761 million deal will give Arch Coal control over around 381 million tons of high-grade, low-cost coal reserves adjacent to its Black Thunder mine

The Federal Trade Commission recently granted antitrust clearance to Arch Coal (ACI) for its pending acquisition of Rio Tinto’s (RTP) Jacobs Ranch mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Arch expects to close the deal within six weeks. Earlier in March, Arch announced its intention to buy the mine for $761 million. It will gain control of almost 381 million tons of high-grade, low-cost coal reserves adjacent to its Black Thunder mine. The company will also receive a high-speed rail load-out, an overland conveyor, a near-pit crushing system and an expansive fleet of highly efficient mining machinery. All these will provide Arch with several operating synergies that will create substantial value for it shareholders going forward. Although the company’s sales and profits tumbled during the first half of the
