We recently reiterated our ‘Neutral’ rating on Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) in view of the company’s continued performance. Smartphone growth continues to be strong, having recorded a 30% growth in 2009 and creating an upsurge in subscription to data plans for carriers. Although capital spending on new equipment has been flat, the carriers have consistently focused on upgrading their existing infrastructure to ensure that they can continue to grow their subscriber base and increase top line. The carrier transition has driven demand in three major equipment segments – core optical switches, core routers, and metro edge aggregation routers. Applied Micro’s leadership position in the broader communications markets, driven by its leading Transport products, should position the company to benefit from the acceleration in the adoption of IP or Ethernet

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) recently announced that it would reduce its workforce by 11% as part of its restructuring plan. Management expects to incur an employee severance charge of approximately $1.3 million – $1.7 million in 2010. Management had earlier chalked out a restructuring plan to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency by integrating its global operations. This integration is expected to reduce operating expenses by taking advantage of a global cost structure. Management expects that the restructuring plan will reduce its ongoing net operating expenses by approximately $1.5 million annually. AppliedMicro had earlier reduced its workforce by 17%. The company also implemented a corporate-wide reduction of consultants, contractors and internal personnel. These actions were part of the company’s planned reduction of its operating expenses. Meanwhile, the company changed

Earlier this month, AppliedMicro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) announced that it has selected an Encounter Digital Implementation (EDI) System from Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (CDNS) for its complex advanced-node designs. This EDI System joins other multiprocessing-capable offerings from AMCC to form a standardized design infrastructure based set of tools. Customers use Cadence software and hardware, methodologies and services to design and verify advanced semiconductors, consumer electronics, networking and telecommunications equipment and computer systems. Management stated that using the EDI system from Cadence enabled the company to achieve significant area reduction and higher utilizations on toughest designs which were difficult to process using the previous methodology. The Nanoroute from Cadence enabled AppliedMicro to port its design from a 90-nanometer process technology to 40 nanometers. Cadence EDI system has comprehensive floorplanning capabilities, advanced

Applied Micro Circuits (AMCC) earlier reported revenues of $49.2 million from continuing operations in the second quarter of 2009, up 9% sequentially but down 23% year over year. The company earlier sold off its 3ware storage adapter solutions business to LSI Corp. (LSI) for approximately $20.8 million. The company had expected that the acquisition of 3ware storage adapter solution business (in 2004) would strengthen the company’s position in SATA based RAID controllers. However, management stated that the customer base, the product requirements and the business dynamics have not converged with its semiconductor solutions. Hence, it decided to sell this business. The company will now focus on its data center, enterprise and telecom businesses. Gross margin came in at 60% compared to 58.5% in the previous quarter and 71% in the year-ago

LSI Corp. (LSI) yesterday reported revenues of $578 million in the third quarter, down 19% year over year but up 11% sequentially. The sequential improvement in revenues was driven by increased shipments of mid range storage systems and server rated solutions. IT spending showed clear signs of improvement in the quarter as data centers needed to add storage capacity to meet demand for data storage in management while also taking advantage of newer server technology. Semiconductor revenues came in at $371.6 million, up 8% sequentially but down 25.7% year over year. Storage Systems revenues came in at $206.6 million, up 16.8% sequentially but down 3.4% year over year.
