Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) is scheduled to announce its fiscal second-quarter 2012 results on May 22. We witness only one downward movement in analyst estimates in the build-up to the release. Prior-Quarter Synopsis Analog’s first quarter 2012 pro forma earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a couple of cents due to weaker-than-expected revenue and margins. Revenue in the quarter was $648.1 million, down 9.5% sequentially and 11.0% year over year, particularly due to the weakness in the consumer, communications and industrial end markets. However, the automotive segment performed well in the quarter on account of increased use of electronic content in automobiles, growing dollar content per vehicle for Analog and higher sales of vehicles. Gross margin of 63.2% was down both sequentially and year over year, impacted by lower

All except the automotive end market weakened for the company, although consumer was the weakest of all. Shares slumped 2.56% in response. While the guidance was also below our expectations, the commentary was more or less as we had expected going by earnings reports from other analog players, such as Linear Technology Corp (LLTC), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) and Texas Instruments (TXN). Revenue Analog Devices generated revenue of $648.1 million, which was down 9.5% sequentially, 11.0% year over year and just within management’s revenue guidance of $645-680 million (down 5-10% sequentially, down 7-12% year over year). Particular weakness in the communications and industrial markets led to weaker-than-expected revenue. This, in turn, impacted margins. The guidance was also below our expectations, but the market appears to have priced in the weakness, given that other analog players, such as Linear Technology Corp (LLTC), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) and Texas Instruments (TXN) also guided below expectations.
Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) is scheduled to announce its third quarter fiscal 2011 results on October 24, 2011, and we notice downward movements in analyst estimates. Second Quarter Overview Texas Instruments delivered a decent second quarter, with pro forma earnings per share of 58 cents exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5 cents, or 9.4%. The company reported revenue of $3.46 billion, which was up 1.9% sequentially and at the lower end of the originally guided range of $3.41 billion and $3.69 billion. The sequential increase was driven by strength in Analog and Embedded Processing segments, partially offset by the expected weakness in the company’s Wireless segment. As expected, revenue from Japan was weak. Texas Instruments’gross margin was 50.7%, down 25 basis points (bps) sequentially and 348 bps from the

Therefore, overall estimates for the current quarter have remained unchanged while those for the following quarter and fiscal years 2011 and 2012 have gone up a bit. Revenue was also better than expectations, beating by around 6.0%. Results exceeded both management and our expectations on revenue and gross lines.
Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN or “TI”) has announced its intention to acquire National Semiconductor Corp (NSM) for $6.5 billion in cash. Counter-bids look unlikely, given the 78% premium TI is willing to pay that most prospective buyers would shy away from. There is significant fragmentation in the market and competition is stiff, so regulatory approval is unlikely to be denied. TI intends to operate National as a separate unit under its analog segment, which would then comprise high performance analog (HPA),

National Semi’s revenues clearly disappointed, with a corresponding negative impact on the gross and operating margin lines. However, the tax rate was lower, helping the company deliver numbers slightly ahead of consensus expectations. While National Semi’s surprise history has not really been spectacular, the 5.9% positive surprise in the last quarter was one of the lowest it has been in recent times. Weak results coupled with weak orders resulted in a 4.81% decline in National Semi’s share prices in after-market trading yesterday. The strong earnings growth was driven by healthy revenues, a better mix of business, cost control and good execution. Despite the positive surprise, Texas Instruments’ shares dropped 1.28% in after-hours trading on continued concerns regarding the slowing of demand, as evident from the first bookings decline in 7 quarters.
Analog Devices (ADI) is a leading supplier of analog and DSP integrated circuits. The company’s April quarter earnings exceeded the Zacks Consensus estimate, driven by particularly strong demand for all major products sold into the industrial and automotive markets. We expect the strength to continue through 2010, as consumer and computing markets gain further momentum. Cash flow also remains impressive. Although we see competitive pressures and capex cuts in China impacting results near-term, we believe Analog Devices has turned the corner. ADI shares are trading at 12.7X our estimated earnings for fiscal 2010, compared to 17.5X for the peer group, a significant discount. Consequently, we are upgrading ADI shares from Neutral to Outperform. Zacks Investment Research

Results exceeded management expectations on revenue, margins and earnings. Shares sunk 2.65% during the day, but gained back 2.36% after hours in response to the news. Revenue Revenue of $668.2 million was up 10.8% sequentially, 40.8% year over year and better than management’s revenue guidance of $635-650 million (up 5-8% sequentially). The sequential strength was driven by the industrial and automotive markets, although the only segment that declined slightly was communications.
The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. For example, the PCs we use, the cars we drive, the phones with which we communicate, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games, and the planes and weapons used to protect us all use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The industry has come a long way since the last downturn, with most of the players streamlining operations and transferring more routine

Revenue Revenue of $571.6 million was up 16.2% sequentially and down 13.5% year over year. The sequential strength was driven by broad-based recovery in all except the communications end-market.
Intel Corp (INTC) raised the quarterly cash dividend by 12.5%, totaling 63 cents a share in 2010. The dividend yield comes to 3.1%. The company has been paying a cash dividend for the last 17 years and has raised the dividend 14 times since it started. Intel has over $8 billion of net cash on its balance sheet, or around $1.58 a share. The $1.25 billion payment to Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will take another 23 cents a share off the cash balance. The remaining cash ($1.35 a share) is sufficient to fund its growth plans, even after paying the higher rate of dividend. We also expect Intel to continue generating strong cash flows, based on its leading market position and product development strategies. Intel’s announcement comes as an indication

During the past 7 days, investors received 3 signs that the outlook for the semiconductor industry is improving. First, last Wednesday, Gartner Inc. raised its forecast for worldwide semiconductor sales. The consulting firm now expects a 17.1% decline, a huge improvement from its previous forecast for a 22.4% drop. Gartner credited lower prices on LCD TVs and computers as well as China’s stimulus package for helping the industry. Second, Intel (INTC) raised its third-quarter guidance. The chipmaker now anticipates third-quarter revenues at about $9 billion, versus its previous forecast of $8.5 billion. Gross margins are expected to be around 53%, with the projection likely being too conservative, rather than too pessimistic. Since Friday’s announcement, 22 out of 35 covering brokerage analysts have raised their 2009 profit projections for INTC. The

Conexant received about $47 million in cash, while the remaining payment is subject to an escrow to be released in one year. The company expects to record a gain of approximately $35 million in the current quarter from the sale. With the sale of its broadband access business, the company completed a major part of its restructuring and now plans to concentrate solely on providing solutions for imaging, audio, video and various embedded-modem applications.
