Dejour farms out development of West Grand Valley By Steven Ralston, CFA Dejour Energy (DEJ) announced the execution of an agreement to sell and farm-out approximately 7,450 acres (gross and net) to an unnamed large-cap NYSE-listed exploration & production (E&P) company. The transaction includes a commitment to carry Dejour through the drilling and completion of three earning wells, along with Dejour being able to retain a 20% working interest in over 5,100 acres of the project. As a result, Dejour can participate in the advancement of this natural gas resource in a capital-efficient manner as well as benefit from a well-capitalized operating partner continuing to secure the leases through the development of the project. Though it is difficult to speculate on the identity of the purchaser, several large-cap E&P companies

We reiterate our Neutral recommendation on Plains Exploration & Production Company (PXP). The company turned in a dull first quarter with both earnings and revenue coming in below the corresponding Zacks Consensus Estimates. Plains is one of the foremost competitors in the U.S. energy market with its balanced asset portfolio. Although comparatively new to the market, Plains’ strategy of upgrading its existing infrastructure, acquisitions and diversification of operations as well as maintenance of its reserves have propelled the company’s stock position in the utility market. The efforts are evident from its recent contracts in the Eagle Ford Shale region and California. However, Plains’ involvement in hedging activities might constrain the company’s ability to realize maximum prices if the market price rises above the current hedged prices.
When I was young, stupid and chasing girls, good looks were the most important attribute a female could have as far as I was concerned. A disastrous relationship with an insane model changed my thinking pretty quickly. After splitting up with “Crazy Christine,” as my friends used to call her, I became much more interested in what was beneath the surface. The same can be said about my approach to stocks. Typically, a company that’s consistently increasing its earnings has a healthy business, and the stock should emulate that success. But I like to dig deeper and really get to know the company. To do that, I look at cash flow. Cash flow is

As part of this effort, BP has inked a deal with the Associated Landowners of the Ohio Valley (ALOV) – a body representing individual mineral owners in the region – to lease around 84,000 acres in Trumbull County, Ohio, a high potential formation in the region. Financial terms of the agreement were not revealed. The Utica shale lies at a depth of about 6,000 feet.
Statoil ASA (STO) along with its partner ExxonMobil Corporation (XOM) has found indications of natural gas in the Zafarani-1 well in Block 2 offshore Tanzania. The well, located about 80 kilometers off mainland Tanzania is considered to be of superior quality. Spud in early January, drilling activities of the well are likely to be over within three months. The drillship Ocean Rig Poseidon is being used to drill the well, which is the first exploration in the license spanning approximately 5,500 square kilometers. The well is expected to be 5,150 meters deep while the water depth at the site is 2,582 meters. Statoil, with a 65% working interest, is the operator of the license on Block 2 for Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation. The remaining 35% is held by ExxonMobil. According

BP Plc (BP) recently won approval from the China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) for natural gas exploration in South China Sea. This marks the company’s second deepwater venture off the coast of China following its purchase of a 41% stake in another block in the region in September 2010. The nod from MOFCOM entitles BP to have 40.82% share in block 43/11 during the exploration phase. However, it will get reduced to approximately 20% upon the commencement of production. China’s biggest offshore oil explorer, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), enjoys the operatorship of the block 43/11. The entry of BP will enforce U.S. based Anadarko Petroleum Corp (APC) to diminish its stake to 24.5%, which was previously 50% in the block under a contract with CNOOC.
Independent oil and gas producer Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC) made another discovery off the coast of Mozambique. This new find to a large extent substantiated the company’s projection that the Offshore Area 1 of Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin at the Lagosta prospect has 15 -30 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable natural gas. The exploration well Lagosta-2, drilled at a total depth of approximately 14,223 feet (4,335 meters), encountered about 4,813 feet (1,467 meters) of water. Anadarko has already mobilized another drillship in the area to spur exploration activity. Anadarko has been operating in Mozambique with drilling success in Lagosta and Camarão. The new find is located 4.4 miles (7 kilometers) north of the Lagosta discovery and 5.3 miles (8.5 kilometers) south of the Camarão well. The drilling well has encountered

This unconventional fuel source is expected to transform domestic energy supply in the future decades by providing a potentially inexpensive and abundant new source of fuel for the world’s largest energy consumer. Huge Geographic Potential According to the Annual Energy Outlook 2011 published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. possesses 2,543 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of potential natural gas resources. Of this, natural gas from shale resources accounts for 862 Tcf. In fact, more

Initial finding from this field, a year ago, suggested an estimated reserve of about 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas but the new find has lifted the estimated recoverable resource to a range of 15–30 Tcf of natural gas, with total estimated reserve at 30–50 Tcf of natural gas. Located in block BM-C-32, offshore Brazil, the Itaipu-2 appraisal well discovered a gross petroleum column of nearly 58 net feet in a pre-salt carbonate reservoir. The well drilled to a total depth of 16,000 feet in 4,660 feet of water is an aggressive step-out from the first Itaipu discovery well, located 4 miles northwest. The Itaipu-2 well established a fluid contact and appears to have successfully extended the accumulation 120 meters downdip from the discovery. Accordingly, the appraisal well significantly increases the extent of the vast Itaipu field. Summation of the data from both the wells is expected to increase the company’s previous resource estimates for
