From the times of the cavemen to present day, coal is used for everything from cooking to heating to running steam-powered trains to generating electricity. Coal is also used for producing heat through combustion. The USA, Russia, Australia, China, India and South Africa have the largest coal reserves in the world. However, September was revised down to a decline of 0.1% from being up 0.2%. That is a healthy increase on both counts. Utility production was once again weak, with a decline of 0.1% for the month, but

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, August 30, 2011: Issue #1589 It’s no secret that coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel on the planet. That being said, it’s an essential part of our existence. The world burns more than seven billion tons per year, mostly for electrical power generation. The United States consumes about 14 percent of the world’s total coal production. More than 90 percent of our coal consumption generates 46 percent of our electricity. There are about 600 coal-fired generating stations in the United States. Most of our aging fleet of plants were constructed between 1950 and 1980. A typical one-gigawatt (GW) coal-fired generating plant burns about 2.5 million tons of coal each year. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), a little more than 50

The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. The recent thaw in oil prices is casting a shadow over this emerging momentum. But even despite the pullback in oil prices, they still remain above historical levels. Nevertheless, we believe that a temporary oil price thaw will do limited, if any, damage to the emerging positive alternative energy narrative. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the projected U.S. refiner crude oil average acquisition cost will rise from $102 per barrel in 2011 to $108 per barrel in 2012. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued the economy in 2010. In the first half of 2011, the

Arkansas Public Service Commission has approved an order with a general rate increase of $8.8 million for OGE Energy Corporation’s (OGE) subsidiary OG&E. The rate hikes will be implemented from July 1, 2011. For an Arkansas residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month, the increase will be $2.32 per month. However, per the company even after the new rates take effect, OG&E’s Arkansas residential rates will be 35% below the national average and 13% below the regional average. The rate hike will help the company to recover the cost incurred for significant electric system expansions and upgrades. The rate order gives the company the much-needed confidence to invest in electric infrastructure including high-voltage transmission lines and wind energy. Such investments in turn are targeted towards keeping the cost in check

The company has a diversified fleet of power generating units, strong balance sheet compared to its peers and the synergies from the Exelon Corporation (EXC) merger, which are among the other positives. However, adverse decisions in pending regulatory cases, lowered electricity demand and erratic weather conditions somewhat weigh on the positives. (XEL) has decided to discontinue its 150 megawatt (MW) Merricourt wind farm project in southeastern North Dakota as it could endanger certain species of birds. The project was scheduled to come in to operation by the end of 2011. The termination of the wind farm project in North Dakota follows Xcel Energy’s hunch that it could have adverse environmental implications. The company also cited uncertainties regarding the time of completion and associated costs to make the project environmentally viable. This $400 million, 150 MW wind farm project was to be jointly developed by Xcel Energy and EnXco Inc. The latter is the U.S. project development unit of Paris-based EDF Energies Nouvelles SA. The total impact of the proposed rate hike, if approved, will be 9.6%, translating to an annual increase of $115 million, and will be effective from 2012. The monthly bill of a residential consumer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (Kwh) of electricity in a month will be $104.99 if the rates are approved by the commission without any alteration. Under the proposal, Duke Energy has proposed a cap of $2.88 billion including financing on construction costs to be passed to customers. It has also asked the regulators to lower the overall customer rate increase related to the project from approximately 19% to 16%. On an average, this would affect the residential homeowner by about 14%. Additionally, Duke Energy wants Indiana customers to experience the benefits of bonus depreciation. Bonus depreciation is a federal tax incentive provided for major projects as part of the Tax Relief Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010. The company spent more than $2 billion constructing new plants and solar farms in the Carolinas in 2010. And while the economy is in recovery mode, so is our hope for the industry. The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, the global economic expansion remains on track. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in its latest release U.S. electricity consumption is expected to rise year-over-year by 4.7% in 2010. Going forward, in fiscal 2011 we expect the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to grow 3.7% year-over-year. Along with this, a faster decline in the unemployment rate will jack up electricity demand, funneling investor interest in the sector. Also, the outlook for the major emerging

Energy utility Constellation Energy Group Inc.(CEG) offered to dispose its interest in a Maryland nuclear power plant to its French partner Electricite de France at the bargain price of $1. However, Constellation will ask its French partner to reimburse expenses of $117 million, which the company had incurred while developing the nuclear asset. With a view to constructing the third nuclear reactor at Constellation’s Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland, the companies entered into a joint venture to form UniStar. Constellation decided to back out of the joint venture citing higher construction costs and a fall in the prices for natural gas that dampened the prospects of the project. Constellation’s lack of interest in the project was more evident when it decided to drop its application for a federal loan guarantee

(AYE) has requested Virginia State Corporation Commission for permission to withdraw its previously submitted application to build the Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline (PATH) project in Virginia. The company has teamed up with American Electric Power Company Inc. (AEP) in the project. Allegheny Energy’s request for withdrawal from the project comes after considering new information provided by regional grid operator PJM Interconnection (PJM), suggesting the project appears unnecessary in 2014. The project was contemplated to resolve reliability problems on the electric grid. PJM is in the process of preparing its more comprehensive 2010 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) to identify the problems in the grid. Allegheny Energy estimates based on the delivery of the 2010 RTEP later next year, a new application in Virginia is not expected before the

Allegheny Energy Inc. (AYE) and American Electric Power (AEP), the joint venture partners for the multi-state transmission line, have proceeded with its PATH (Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline) project in Maryland and Virginia. The companies have taken several actions which will further align the project’s regulatory review activities and support their efforts to complete the project by June 2014. The PATH project consists of a 765-kilovolt transmission line extending from the Amos Substation in Putnam County, West Virginia, to the proposed Kemptown Substation near New Market, Maryland. The companies made two filings in Maryland and Virginia, designed to coordinate the procedural schedules and to enable the respective commissions to consider the need for the project based on the same facts. In the first filing, Allegheny’s affiliate, the Potomac Edison Company, submitted a

American Electric Power Co. Inc.’s (AEP) subsidiary Southwestern Electric Power Co. signed a letter of intent to buy transmission and distribution assets worth $94 million from the Valley Electric Membership Corp. Southwestern Electric’s acquisition of the cooperative will double its presence in Louisiana. Valley Electric Membership Corp. is a Louisiana cooperative with more than 7,000 miles of distribution lines, 90 miles of transmission lines and 29 substations. Southwestern Electric expects to shell out $124 million overall for the deal. Although this is over the value of the assets, the company would be adding 30,000 customers of the cooperative. A deal is expected to be formalized by the end of fiscal 2009, with a formal vote on the dissolution of the cooperative expected by February 2010. However, a number of regulatory

Revenue fell 17% to $3.5 billion in the quarter from $4.2 billion in the year-ago period. A tepid economy, coupled with a summer, which was cooler than average, affected electricity demand in the quarter. The downturn affected demand for industrial customers most. Industrial retail sales fell 16.9% year-over-year, while commercial retail sales declined 1.2%. However, residential retail sales remained stagnant. Ongoing earnings rose to $443 million from $374 million in the year-ago quarter. Ongoing earnings from Utility Operations increased $88 million year-over-year.
by David Fessler, Energy and Infrastructure Expert Friday, October 9, 2009: Issue #1112 It’s one of the fiercest debates in the world – both politically and economically. That’s because it concerns the world itself – namely, how to protect it from harmful environmental emissions and global warming. Many environmentalists say global warming not only exists, but is also the leading cause of damage to the Earth. They cite obvious factors like the Antarctic ice shelves breaking off, glaciers melting at unprecedented rates and the holes in the Earth’s ozone layer. But a few scientists believe global warming is exaggerated, with warmer temperatures and melting ice the result of normal up-and-down cycles that occur every 10,000 years or so. For the record, I believe global warming is real. But the big
