Applied Materials (AMAT) is one of the world’s largest suppliers of fabrication equipment to semiconductor, LCD and solar PV cell manufacturers. Applied Materials’ third quarter results exceeded estimates, but guidance disappointed, due to utilization cuts at DRAM, NAND and foundry customers. Therefore, we think the shares will underperform in the near term. Add to this a peaking cycle, the recent increase in debt and issuers in the TV market and we can expect significantly lower earnings. We are therefore downgrading AMAT shares from Neutral to Underperform. We think the trend is moving downward rather than upward, not just because of our earnings growth expectation for Applied Materials, which is slightly lower than the peer group, but also because of recent adverse conditions in the market and the cyclical peaking.
Concerns about the near-term growth outlook of the U.S. economy may have started to move beyond the debate stage and start showing up in estimates for second quarter GDP. The estimate cut by economists at JPMorgan (JPM) this morning to 2.5% from 3.2%, citing temporary factors, could be an early sign of the emerging trend on the estimates front. Today’s soft durable goods report for April, coming after a slew of mixed reports on the nation’s manufacturing picture in recent days, will likely hasten that trend. The economy’s weak growth pace in the first quarter was attributed to transitory factors that are expected to reverse in the coming quarters. It was this expectation that made the market comfortable in second quarter GDP growth expectations in the 3% to 3.5% range.

by David Fessler, Investment U’s Monday, May 9, 2011 I haven’t written much about solar recently, and for good reason: There really hasn’t been much to write about. Many U.S. solar panel companies have gone belly-up, like EPV Solar, whose intellectual property was purchased by New Millennium Solar Equipment Corporation. Others, like Evergreen Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR), have outsourced their manufacturing operations overseas. Even that hasn’t helped this struggling U.S. manufacturer, whose shares are trading for just over a $1. Still others have merged with or been bought out by larger competitors, like Advanced Solar. Running out of money, it was acquired in November of 2009 by Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT). Or OptiSolar, which was acquired for $400 million by First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) in March of 2009. But

With the April non-farm payroll report coming out Friday morning, the market’s focus remains on the labor market. And we got a less-than-reassuring glimpse of the jobs situation through the weaker-than-expected report this morning from the payroll processor, Automatic Data Processing (ADP). ADP reported that 179,000 private sector jobs were created in April, which was short of expectations in the 200,000 vicinity. This is also below current expectations of private sector jobs in the Friday’s non-farm payroll report. ADP’s position as the nation’s largest private-sector payroll processor provides it an excellent vantage point from which to read changes in the nation’s labor market. The ADP report did not do a good job of foretelling the government jobs reports in the winter months, but has been right on the money in

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. Unrest in the Middle East and North Africa continued as immediately after the overthrow of leaders in Egypt and Tunisia, demonstrators in Bahrain, Libya and Algeria put forward similar demands. Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa and Bahrain is next only to Saudi Arabia when it comes to oil reserves. The situation has sparked concern over oil prices and crude prices surged to their highest level in 2.5 years. The trend of rising markets now seems to be suffering a setback.
Applied Materials (AMAT) is one of the world’s largest suppliers of fabrication equipment to semiconductor, LCD and solar PV cell manufacturers. Applied’s product breadth, strong position in China, improving trends across served markets, new design wins, market share gains, management execution and solid financials are the reasons for our positive opinion on the shares. Management’s decision to discontinue the thin film business also makes sense, in our opinion. Although it is apparent that the equipment cycle has peaked, we expect the company to outperform its peers this year. We are, therefore, upgrading AMAT shares to Outperform. Our target price of $18 (14.4x P/E) supports this view. APPLD MATLS INC (AMAT): Free Stock Analysis Report Zacks Investment Research

This was in spite of the revenue beat of 6.1% and mainly on account of a higher-contribution from the loss-making EES unit (even excluding the one-time inventory adjustments, EES segment margins declined 309 bps). Analysts are generally more positive about Applied Materials after the company announced its decision to close down Sunfab.
Overview The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. For example, the PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions and so forth.
Applied Materials’ (AMAT) second quarter 2010 earnings beat the Zacks Consensus by a penny. As a consequence, shares did not move around too much. Estimates for Applied Materials underwent a correction when the company reported first quarter results. At that time, Applied Materials clarified the strong outlook for the year, which reflected expectations of market research companies. Although a couple of analysts have fine-tuned their estimates in 30 days leading to the second quarter earnings announcement, the impact on the Zacks Consensus Estimate was negligible. Revenue Revenue of $2.29 billion was up 24.2% sequentially and 125.0% year over year. The year-over-year increase was reflective of the turnaround in the capital equipment market and particularly, the company’s exposure to the memory segment, which should grow in leaps and bounds this year.

With the broad turnaround in the semiconductor capital equipment market underway, some of the other equipment makers, such as Research (LRCX) and Teradyne (TER) also reported stronger results. Consequently, we are very positive about the largest equipment company Applied Materials (AMAT) which is expected to report within the next few weeks. Revenue Revenue of $478.3 million was up 8.6% sequentially and 54.5% year over year. The sequential strength was due to a larger section of customers increasing their capex investments, particularly in advanced technology. The technical complexity in manufacturing semiconductors and increasingly challenging yield issues are the drivers behind these investments. New products also helped growth in the last quarter. Revenue Revenue of $276.2 million was up 13.1% sequentially, 179.3% year over year and over the high-end of the revised guidance range. This reflects continued demand from foundries and increased expenditure on the memory side, driven by strengthening prices for NAND and DRAM. Management also stated that the current strength could be attributed to the PC refresh cycle, growing demand for cell phones (particularly smartphones) and the launch of other MIDs, such as Apple, Inc’s (AAPL) iPad. For that matter, China did a lot of pointing right back at the U.S. Both seemed bound and determined to blame the other for the summit’s failure. But while the Obama administration talks a good talk about green technology, China actually does something about it. A recent Bloomberg New Energy Finance report shows China spent $34.6 billion on renewable energy in 2009. That works out to over $94.7 million per day, nearly twice what the U.S. did. More over, Bloomberg didn’t include government spending in that story. It covered private investment in renewable energy projects. And it detailed money raised in stock offerings, venture capital and private equity deals by companies within

In contrast, personal consumption expenditures, also know as PCE or personal spending, rose by $34.7 billion or 0.3%. If spending rises by more than income, naturally savings will fall. Personal spending in February fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $340.0 billion, down 9.3% from January’s rate of $374.9 billion. The savings rate fell to 3.1% from 3.4%. Relative to consensus expectations, personal income came in a tick lower than the 0.1% increase expected, while PCE was in line with expectations. On both spending and income, the February rate was a slowdown from the revised January increases of 0.3% for income and 0.4% for PCE. However,

Applied Materials’ (AMAT) all-cash acquisition of Semitool Inc. has closed. Around 94% of Semitool shares have been offered for purchase and accepted. Applied Materials intends to buy up any additional shares as may be offered at the same price of $11 per share. With the FTC and the Justice Department terminating the waiting period under the Hart-Scott Rodino Act last week, the company had only to pay out the agreed $360 million to close the acquisition. Applied Materials, which so far supplied equipment for chip fabrication, will now acquire an important position in the fast-growing packaging segment as well. The acquisition is expected to bring savings to customers, which should strengthen its position in the mobile devices market (smartphones, notebooks and so forth). Semitool’s expertise in copper interconnect systems will

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. For example, the PCs we use, the cars we drive, the phones with which we communicate, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games, and the planes and weapons used to protect us all use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The industry has come a long way since the last downturn, with most of the players streamlining operations and transferring more routine

Novellus Systems (NVLS) raised its fourth-quarter revenue and earnings outlook, as a result of the ongoing recovery in the semiconductor market. The company now expects revenues of $225-245 million, compared to previous guidance of $215-245 million, which raises the mid-point from $230 to $235 million. Management had previously guided to bookings increase of 25-50%, which were not subsequently revised. Therefore, we assume that bookings are expected to remain within this range. GAAP gross margin expectations were also not revised and remain in the 44-47% range. EPS expectations were raised to 25-40 cents from previous guidance of 20-40 cents. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the fourth quarter is pegged at 31 cents, close to the middle of the revised range. The company’s third-quarter earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a

KLA-Tencor Corporation’s (KLAC) first quarter earnings beat the Zacks consensus by 29 cents. Revenue beat the consensus by 3.1%. This follows significantly stronger results reported by ASML Holdings NV (ASML). We currently expect the other large equipment makers, Applied Materials (AMAT) and Lam Research (LRCX) to also report strong results. Revenue Revenue of $342.7 million was up 21.7% sequentially and down 35.6% year over year. The sequential strength was due to a larger section of customers increasing their capex investments, particularly in advanced technology. The technical complexity in manufacturing semiconductors and increasingly challenging yield issues are the drivers behind these investments. Products generated 67% of total revenue, an increase of 30.1% sequentially and a decline of 43.5% year over year. Services revenue was 33% of the total, up 7.8% sequentially

ASML Holding N.V. (ASML) was the first of the capital equipment companies to report third quarter results. Judging from the 100.7% increase in revenue to €555.3 million, we feel more optimistic about Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA Tencor (KLAC), Lam Research (LRCX) and Tokyo Electron, the other big players in the space. Although the year-over-year decline of 20.3% indicates that sales are still quite weak, performance is still significantly better than the 67.2% and 80.0% year-over-year declines in the preceding two quarters. The strengthening markets are not so much a reflection of a recovery, according to management, as they are a result of new product introductions, leading to increased demand from memory and foundry customers in Asia. Revenue increase in the last quarter was driven by increases in both average selling

In the news this morning, Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) announced that fourth quarter revenues would beat expectations. It’s an unexpected bit of data when many were starting to count the solar sector out – and not for good reason. After our last energy crisis, many alternative energy producers, like solar, were simply forgotten about when gas prices came back down. With the average price per gallon at around $1.96, who could blame them if they expected the same thing to happen? But the interesting thing is that it hasn’t. Trinity Solar follows news from Suntech Power (NYSE: STP), the world’s largest solar module producer, that it expects production to increase – almost 60%. That’s quite the opposite of a drop-off. Granted, there are just as many solar losers, as winners.
