We have downgraded our recommendation on AAR Corporation (AIR) from Neutral to Underperform. We have been witnessing an overcapacity in the aerospace market, aggravated by intense competition from the big and small industry players. Risk of lower military operations, delayed aircraft delivery and unscheduled maintenance inspections raise costs. In addition, inadequate debt financing, unfavorable aircraft lease agreement and currency fluctuations constrain profitability considerably. The company reported net income per diluted share of $0.50, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. However, our $15.00 target price, 8.2x 2012 EPS, reflects our downgrade in recommendation. Improvements in all business segments, except for Structures and Systems, roughly doubled the revenue in the quarter.
Earlier this month, Aar Corp. (AIR) entered into a series of related transactions with Mesa Air Group, Inc. (MESA). AAR and Mesa amended their parts supply and maintenance agreements for Mesa’s CRJ-200 and ERJ-145 aircraft fleet to provide Mesa with increased flexibility to respond to demand fluctuations in the 50-seat aircraft market. In consideration for these amendments AAR will receive a cash payment from Mesa along with 15 million shares of Mesa’s common stock. AAR will return to Mesa $6.1 million aggregate principal amount at maturity of Mesa’s 2023 notes. AAR does not expect to increase its stock ownership in Mesa, and may sell down its position from time to time as market conditions permit. AAR has generated approximately $30 million in annual sales supporting Mesa’s CRJ-200 and ERJ-145 fleets.

Just in case you haven’t noticed, shares of AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR), which provides products and services to the aviation, aerospace, and defense industries worldwide, have taken a dive in the last couple of weeks, more so than would have been expected as a result of a declining market. After shares in the company’s stock recovered earlier this year to around $20 per share, they are now again hovering around the $12 mark after getting beaten down hard. So what gives? Why all of a sudden, when nothing entirely earth shattering is taking place, is AAR getting pummeled way more than it should be? I have a few theories that I’ll be sharing in this post, as well as previewing AAR’s Q3/09 earnings which will be reported Tuesday March 17th

It’s been another incredible month for stocks, and especially for those on my watch list. With rare exception, stocks of all shapes and sizes are getting pummeled and are presenting us with great buying opportunities for those with a long term investment horizon. I recently wrote that now was a fantastic time to buy shares of companies you have been watching and where the fundamentals present an excellent risk/reward scenario. My watch list is no different, and this month I have a broad range of stocks that I am looking at for possible inclusion into the PeakStocks.com portfolio. These stocks enter and exit my Top 5 as constant fluctuations in both price, market conditions, and business fundamentals constantly alter the investment thesis. Today I wanted to give you a heads

Even though I have already allocated a full position, and then some, to AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR), the recent sell-off in the market, and with AAR in particular, is WAY overdone. Sometimes you get a gift, and you would be crazy to not take it. Various valuation metrics as well as my discounted cash flow analysis (DCF) put AAR about 50-100% below fair market value without even accounting for a recovery in the marketplace! Add this to recent insider buying, and the stock trading below tangible book value, and at a severe discount to its peers, and you get a classic low risk, high reward proposition that is hard to pass up. It might take weeks, or it might take months, but I believe AAR at these levels represents a

What: AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR): AAR Corp. is a diversified company that provides products and services to the aviation, aerospace, and defense industries worldwide. It operates in four segments: Aviation Supply Chain; Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO); Structures and Systems; and Aircraft Sales and Leasing. AAR has gotten slammed to the mat along with most other stocks in the Aerospace and Defense sector over the last year or so. I am issuing a BUY recommendation on shares of AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR) immediately. I am initiating a BUY recommendation of AAR at or around $11.75 per share. I’ll be coming out with a post later this evening explaining why. New to the AAR story?
On a day that the markets were absolutely crushed, AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR) survived the maelstrom to finish the day up modestly (+.57 to $16.24) as a result of their continued stellar results even in the face of severe weakness and cutbacks in the airline industry. As I predicted when reviewing AAR’s quarter and what to expect, the results were absolutely wonderful across the board especially when taking into account all the headwinds that AAR is facing in their various business segments. Will this continue? Can AAR keep weathering these shifts in the market to keep their dominant position atop the industry? In this post I’ll be breaking down AAR’s full earnings release, as well as their analyst conference call, and round out my post with what you should do

It’s about that time again when earnings season is upon us with some companies reporting their earnings mid-stream. PeakStocks.com portfolio recommendation AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR), which provides products and services to the aviation, aerospace, and defense industries worldwide, will be reporting earnings for their Q1/2009 fiscal year Tuesday September 16, 2008 after the market closes. What will be interesting to see is how the recent slowdown and cutbacks by the airline industry, and specifically certain customers that used AAR for their maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), affected AAR’s business prospects and earnings outlook. Analysts still feel very strongly about this stock, with not one analyst downgrading it ever since I’ve been following the company for over a year now, and even today, William Blair started AAR at an outperform.
Oftentimes, we hear from analysts, writers or other pundits about a certain stock’s high short interest, and how that can signal bad times ahead for a stock. So what exactly does a high short interest mean, and does it always signal that a stock is about to fall because people are betting against it? In this post, I’m going to go over all the ins and outs of what shorting a stock means, and more importantly for us, how sometimes this high short count is not caused by those necessarily betting against a stock, but rather from the financial institutions that have lent the company money and have received convertible bonds or warrants in return. Why would a financial institution that is lending money bet AGAINST the stock of the

There’s nothing that I could say to start off this post that would clarify AAR’s position in their market right now better than what CEO David Storch said to start the 4th quarter and full year 2008 earnings conference call: “Based on questions we have been receiving over the last several weeks, we believe the market may not fully appreciate the spread of business we have here at AAR. In many quarters we are merely seen as an airline aftermarket provider. While that was more true earlier in the decade, today AAR is a much broader company servicing a wider customer base.” Therein lies the beauty of the diversification in AAR’s business, and their ability to leverage that business, even in tough times like now, to come out stronger and

While a rising tide lifts all boats, the opposite also holds true. Such has been the case with PeakStocks.com portfolio recommendation AAR Corp. (NYSE: AIR), which provides products and services to the aviation, aerospace, and defense industries. Lately the words “aviation”, “aerospace” and “defense” have been about as popular as uttering the phrase “oil prices are higher”. You can’t always escape the boom or the hammer that befalls a certain industry or sector, even if it appears that AAR is more protected from these concerns than other companies within its industry. As a result of this and AAR’s upcoming earnings release in about 2 weeks, I am downgrading AAR’s shares to a HOLD if only temporarily, and for new money, until we get more clarification as to what’s going on
