The better-than-expected result was driven by strong top-line growth in the quarter. Operating Performance Non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations increased 17.0% year over year, the net effect of a lower share count, higher revenue and lower tax rate. Adjusted net earnings from continuing operations totaled $165.9 million compared with $176.2 million in the year-ago quarter. The year-over-year decline was due to higher interest expense in the quarter. Gross profit increased 10.6% year over year to $496.6 million.
Yields on treasury bonds were expected to start trending up as the end point for the Fed’s $600 billion QE2 program came closer. The thinking was that as the Fed stopped buying these bonds, yields will have nowhere to go but up. This fairly plausible view, which has Pimco’s Bill Gross as one of its exponents, has failed to materialize thus far.
Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) is scheduled to announce its third quarter 2011 results on February 9, 2011, and we see a limited number of revisions in analyst estimates at this point in time. Second Quarter Overview Computer Sciences’ second quarter 2011 revenue slipped 1.63% from the year-ago period due to the revenue decline in the North American Public Sector (NPS) segment and a negative currency impact. However, Computer Sciences won $4.5 billion worth of new businesses during the quarter. Operating margin of 7.75% dropped 69 basis points from 8.44% in the year-ago quarter due to the decline in total revenue, which exceeded the fall in operating cost. Earnings per share were $1.18, down from $1.40 reported in the year-ago quarter, but were marginally above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.17.

Software giant Oracle Corp. (ORCL) has agreed to pay $46.0 million to settle a kickback suit against Sun Microsystems. Oracle declined to comment. The suit was filed back in 2004 in the federal court of Arkansas. The lawsuit alleged that Sun improperly paid kickbacks to systems integrator companies, like Accenture PLC (ACN), in return for recommendations that federal agencies buy Sun’s products. In 2007, the U.S. government became a party to the suit. In this context it is worth noting that in April 2009, Oracle announced the acquisition of Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion ($9.50 a share) or $5.6 billion net of Sun’s cash and debt. Oracle also settled claims that Sun provided incomplete and incorrect information to the government officers during contract negotiations in the late 1990s. U.S. Postal

However, markets closed ahead of the tax bill being turned into law and the indices ended almost flat. In addition, there were positive signs for the economy from Conference Board statements. But, the Euro-zone debt concern kept the investors jittery and avoided the markets to gain significantly. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.06% to close at 11,491. The S&P 500 rose 0.08% to 1,243 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq was up 0.21%, to close at 2,642. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) fell more than 7% to remain just above 16, reflecting a rise in investor confidence. On the New York Stock Exchange,

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) announced the availability of world’s fastest microprocessor that will begin shipping to customers from Sep 10, 2010. The z196 processor is a four-core chip that contains 1.4 billion transistors on a 512-square milimeter (mm) surface. The chip was manufactured by using 45 nanometer (nm) silicon on insulator (SOI) processor technologies. The microprocessor chip can pick up speeds of up to 5.2 gigahertz, which means the chip’s controlling clock can tick out 5.2 billion pulses per second to keep data moving around the microscopic channels in the chip. The mainframe processor uses embedded DRAM (eDRAM) technology, which allows IBM to place dense DRAM caches, or components, on the same chips as high-speed microprocessors, resulting in improved performance. With the increasing complexities associated with day to day
