3M Aerospace, part of 3M Company (MMM), meets the problem of substructure erosion in aircraft areas, like lavatories, galleys and doorways, which are frequently exposed to moisture through introduction of 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes. These tapes cover the floor panel joints and the larger areas are protected from moisture by these wide-area tapes. With the constant erosion, the floor panels and beams in the substructure are required to be replaced. These replacements costs about $30,000 to $100,000 per aircraft, as such protection is very essential. The 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes resists the spread of fire and have long service life. The tapes are used for seam sealing, wide wet area protection and beam protection and can be easily and quickly installed. It also meets the new policy of the FAA.

The deluge of this morning’s favorable economic and earnings reports should help stocks sustain Wednesday’s Fed-inspired gains. We got positive weekly Initial Jobless Claims numbers and a better-than-expected Durable Goods Orders reading. On the earnings front, Caterpillar’s (CAT) blowout results will likely ease some of the lingering concerns about weakness in China and other emerging markets. Of this morning’s economic releases, the most important number was the roughly in-line Jobless Claims reading, showing a gain of 21K to 377K. Please recall that we saw an unusually big drop last week, likely resulting from complications in seasonally adjusting the data at this time of the year. Today’s reading goes some way towards correcting that. The four-week average, which smooths out the week-to-week fluctuation, dropped by 2.5K to 377.5K, maintaining its downtrend

The Office and Consumer Products segment contributed approximately 13% to Avery’s total revenue in fiscal 2010 and in the most recently reported third quarter of 2011. The segment manufactures and sells a wide range of office and printable media products under the Avery brand name for office, school and home uses. The segment also offers an array of stationery products, including writing instruments, markers, adhesives and specialty products under popular brand names such as Avery, Marks-A-Lot and HI-LITER.
3M Company (MMM) reported modest results for the third quarter of 2011. The company achieved year-over-year top-line growth of 9.6%, as five out of six segments saw revenue growth. The bottom-line slipped 1% however, missing our estimate by 9 cents. Third Quarter Highlights Total revenue in the quarter increased 9.6% year over year to $7.5 billion. Acquisitions contributed 3.7% to total growth, foreign exchange added 3.1%, organic volume growth 1.9% and higher year-on-year selling prices 0.9%. A weakness in electronic markets as well as declining growth in developed economies negatively affected organic volume in the quarter. Uncertainty over economic growth kept investors jittery, though the benchmarks escaped recording their longest losing streak since Jimmy Carter’s days in the White House. Traders believe the rebound was partially led by former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Donald Kohn’s comments about the Fed considering a new stimulus plan, which brought the buyers into the market. Economic reports ahead of the opening bell had been encouraging, but failed to sustain the momentum as Bernanke dashed investors’ hopes and Moody’s said it has put the US’s bond rating under review for a possible downgrade.
Tyco International Ltd. (TYC) announced that it has completed the acquisition of a 75% stake in KEF Holdings Ltd., which is a UAE-based integrated valve manufacturer and provider of steel castings to the oil and gas, chemical, mining and power industries. This acquisition of KEF was first announced on March 21, 2011. The transaction is relatively small, valued at approximately $300 million. The acquisition of KEF holdings is in line with Tyco’s strategy of strengthening its market position in the core security, fire and flow control platforms. The deal enhances the company’s position in the Middle East, as it provides its flow control business with strategic manufacturing presence. This is because Tyco’s product knowledge, operations expertise and advanced valve technology compliment KEF’s local manufacturing and sales channels in the Middle

Online retail giant Amazon (AMZN) reports after the markets close today. Ford sped past earnings and revenue expectations, with quarterely results the best in more than 10 years. This solid result should help the automaker wipe out the disappointment from its last quarterly result. Also coming ahead of top- and bottom-line expectations was 3M. The Investment Company Institute (ICI) calculates that muni bond funds incurred $2.4 billion worth of outflows last week. This was the 10th consecutive week of outflows. The Dow Jones industrial average, after rising as much as 89 points, closed with a drop of slightly more than 3 points, or 0.03%, at 11359.16.
Stocks had a mixed day on Thursday as investors weighed mixed earnings reports and a possible announcement from the Federal Reserve to buy bonds. 3M Co.’s downbeat earnings and its tepid full-year outlook wiped off market’s initial advance that was fueled by a surprise drop in initial claims. The unexpected drop in first-time claims for unemployment benefits sent the Dow average up 53 points in the morning session. However, as the session progressed the advance petered out and the blue-chip average closed with a loss of 12 points. 3M’s (NYSE:MMM) narrower profit outlook for 2010 and its dim view of the U.S. and European economies weighed in the minds of investors. 3M (NYSE:MMM) weighed heavily on the DJIA after it lowered its 2010 profit view by $0.06 to a range

After swinging back and forth for much of the session, stocks closed mostly in the red Wednesday amid concerns that the Fed’s planned purchase of Treasury bonds would not be as heavy and swift as earlier anticipated. Traders are eagerly awaiting a Federal Reserve move to inject more money into the economy by buying bonds. Expectations that the U.S. central bank would soon launch the asset purchases have fueled a rally in stocks. However, market participants are now concerned that the second round of quantitative easing would not be as big as has been expected. Those worries strengthened further after a Wall Street Journal report said yesterday that the Fed would buy no more than $200 billion worth of bonds and the purchases would be spread over several months. Traders refrained from placing bigger bets as a group of finance ministers met in South Korea amid an ensuing currency war. Traders were hopeful that the officials from twenty major economies would find a solution to manage exchange rates. On Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 14 points, or 0.1%, to 11,132. The broader S&P 500 index added 2.82 points, or 0.24%, to 1183.08. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index gained nearly 20 points, or 0.8%, to 2479.39.
A bit of volatility returned to the stock market earlier this week following China’s surprise rate hike and disappointment with some of the details within Apple’s (AAPL) earnings report. The approximate 1.6% drop in the S&P 500 turned heads because stocks had been trending up so nicely as of late. What often gets lost in the daily tracking of the financial markets, however, is perspective. For example, let’s look at the S&P 500. Since the end of August, the large-cap index has appreciated by more than 12%. Conversely, since the end of April, the index is down just under 1%. In other words, despite more volatility than we would like, the S&P 500 is currently trading at a level that is more less where the index was last spring. The
