We are maintaining our Neutral recommendation on Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limited (SHI) with a target price of $42. Sinopec Shanghai, one of China’s largest petrochemical companies, is poised to benefit from the country’s continuous demand growth and its strategic positioning in a fast growing economy. We also like Sinopec Shanghai’s unique vertically integrated business model, whereby the company can use its intermediate petrochemicals in manufacturing downstream products. Additionally, we expect the company to benefit from the improvement in the petrochemical market by way of demand stability. However, we are concerned by the challenging overall environment for refining margins and volumes. Weak demand for refined products in the global downturn and increased capacity has squeezed margins throughout the industry. The rising crude oil prices also negatively impacted the company’s margins

Results beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 12 cents with an over fivefold increase from 4 cents reported in the same period of the previous year, following favorable pricing and demand for activated carbon sales. The Pittsburgh-based manufacturer, which specializes in products that filter water and air, saw revenues climb 8.5% to $107.5 million in the quarter. Revenues in the Activated Carbon and Service segment increased 10.6% to $94.2 million on higher sales of activated carbon for potable water treatment in Asia and for the removal of mercury from coal-fired power plants.
Back in February in this column, I reviewed Praxair (NYSE: PX), one of the dominant players in the specialty gas sector. You may recall that Praxair – a global, Fortune 300 company – is the largest industrial gases company in the Americas, and the world. With 27,000 employees in 30 countries, Praxair supplies its products to a wide array of customers around the globe. It produces, sells and distributes atmospheric, process and specialty gases. It’s also a manufacturer of high-performance surface coatings for metals. The company’s advanced manufacturing segment designs and manufactures cryogenic and non-cryogenic gas supply systems for various manufacturing processes. Back in February, the company wasn’t laying off workers or closing factories. And two quarters later, the stock is up around 18% and business is steadily improving. Chairman

Basic earnings were RMB 0.139 ($1.79) per share in contrast to a basic loss of RMB 0.050 ($0.65) in the first half of 2008. Crude oil is the company’s major raw material and accounted for 59.32% of cost of sales in the first half.
I am spending the next few days in Europe on a short business trip. First stop is Dublin where the temperature is icy, the mood is dour, property prices are plunging, the queues for jobless claims are five hours long, the soon-to-be-unemployed are holding protest strikes, and the banks are on the edge of a financial precipice. Yes, it may be a movie with different actors, but the plot is the same as in many other countries. Meanwhile in the US, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner yesterday disappointed the markets with the lack of detail on the administration’s Financial Stability Plan. After all, he did say a few days ago (paraphrasing): ” We are not going to put out the details of our plan until we get it right.” (Please click

by Alexander Green, Oxford Club Investment Director You can’t blame most market investors for being nervous… The stock market has done a belly flop. Real estate keeps tumbling. The economy remains weak. Jobless claims recently hit a 26-year high. Investors have pulled tens of billions of dollars out of stocks and plunked it in the bank. We are optimistic, nonetheless. Why? Because the bad news is already reflected in current stock prices. Valuations are attractive. Negative sentiment is a bullish signal, not a bearish one. And all that cash sitting on the sidelines is actually a good thing. This month we’ll look at why. We’ll also highlight a world-class biotech firm that will allow you to take advantage of one of the most attractive buying opportunities in almost two decades.

by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist, Investment U Aggressively Growing a Business During a Recession… It’s a Gas It’s hard to imagine an easy way to grow a company during recessionary times. Most are hunkering down, laying off workers, and closing factories. So how is it that a few CEO’s manage not just to survive a recession, but are actually able to grow and expand their businesses? To try to answer that question, we can take a look at a good example: Praxair (NYSE:PX), a dominant player in the specialty gases sector. Praxair – a global, Fortune 300 company – is the largest industrial gases company in the Americas, and one of the largest in the world.
