My mother believes shopping is a sport. If it were, there’s no doubt she would be a world champion. I’d say an Olympic gold medalist, but she lost her amateur status years ago. When my mom shops, she’s not satisfied unless she’s getting top merchandise for at least 40% off. And like a hunter who can’t wait to brag about the 12-point buck he took, my mother will tell anyone who’ll listen about the $300 sweater she got for $80. But unlike the tales of hunters and fishermen, when it comes to my mom and shopping, the big one doesn’t get away. Everyone loves a bargain. But some people are willing to work harder to get it. Investors are like shoppers. Some will stand in line to buy the latest

In a bold move to boost its position in next-generation servers, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced that it will acquire microserver start-up SeaMicro for $334 million, of which approximately $281 million will be paid in cash. This would mark Advanced Micro’s first major acquisition under its new CEO Rory Read. The company expects the deal to increase its appealing to data center operators. SeaMicro, based in Sunnyvale, California, makes energy-efficient servers that are used in data centers for cloud computing. It uses Intel (INTC) chips in its next-generation servers, which offer dramatic reductions in power and space usage. Recent industry reports suggest that out of the total energy supply in 2011, more than 2.5% was being used by data centers. Hence, efficiency remains a major concern for IT

The surprise was driven by strength in the server segment, a richer mix of business, lower-than-expected taxes and helped by the fact that estimates dropped 9 cents over the past two months. Revenue Intel’s reported revenue was $13.9 billion, within management’s guidance range of $$14.0 billion (+/-$500 million). Revenue for the quarter dropped 2.4% sequentially, while increasing 21.2% year over year. As indicated by the HDD suppliers Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate (STX), as well as PC companies Hewlett Packard Company (HPQ) and Dell Inc (DELL), the floods in Thailand had a significant impact on the PC market toward the end of the year. Particular weakness in the communications and industrial markets led to weaker-than-expected revenue. This, in turn, impacted margins. The guidance was also below our expectations, but the market appears to have priced in the weakness, given that other analog players, such as Linear Technology Corp (LLTC), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) and Texas Instruments (TXN) also guided below expectations.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) plans to eliminate 10% of its workforce or about 1,400 jobs in order to reduce operational costs. This layoff is an attempt by AMD to optimize its cost structure and thereby improve its competitiveness. The workforce reduction is expected to be over by the first quarter of 2012 and will be conducted globally across all its divisions. Along with other unspecified operational changes, the layoffs are expected to save $200 million in 2012. Management is looking to reinvest some of the savings into newer business areas, including chips for devices such as tablet-style computers in emerging markets and Internet-related opportunities (mainly cloud computing). The studies were conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drug in patients suffering from diabetic macular edema (DME). DME leads to swelling of the retina in patients with type I or type II diabetes. The disease can cause blurred vision, severe vision loss and at times blindness. Data from the trials demonstrated that the patients, after 24 months of treatment with Lucentis, experienced significant, rapid and sustained improvement in vision compared to those who were given placebo. Roche also confirmed that patients experienced an improvement in vision within seven days of starting treatment with Lucentis. The company added that patients on Lucentis also experienced decreased retinal swelling.

National Semiconductor Corporation’s (NSM) earnings for the fourth quarter ended May 2011 were 4 cents higher than the Zacks Consensus estimate of 27 cents. National’s revenues were strong, despite the disaster in Japan, enabling the company to exceed the guidance provided on the last earnings call. As a result, the gross margin remained steady and operating margin actually improved slightly. Additionally, the tax rate was again lower, helping the company deliver numbers ahead of expectations. During the quarter, National announced its decision to merge with Texas Instruments (TXN). National generated revenue of $374.1 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, a sequential increase of 8.8% and a year-over-year decline of 6.1%, exceeding the high-end of management’s guided range of $360-370 million (a 5-8% sequential increase).
by Louis Basenese, Chief Investment Strategist, Wall Street Daily Friday, June 3, 2011: Issue #1527 Global merger and acquisitions activity volume just surpassed the $1-trillion mark. Not only that, but the market also hit that milestone six weeks earlier than it did last year. Why should we care? I’ll let National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: NSM) do the talking for me. On April 4, Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) announced it was buying National Semiconductor for $25 a share – a 75 percent premium to the share price at the time. And look what happened… Since nobody invests for sport. The reason to care about an uptick in mergers and acquisitions activity is easy: greed.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, May 12, 2011 Last week, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) said it made the biggest breakthrough in microprocessor design in recent history. It called its new chip the most significant advance since the 1950?s silicon transistor. The company expects to begin production later this year, using a revolutionary 3D technology it has worked on for nearly a decade. With these strides, Intel claims to be three years ahead of the competition. Regardless, the move is a significant one. Microchip transistors, the building blocks of electronics, are always produced in flat structures. But Intel’s breakthrough involves more complex, 3D models with circuit widths of 22 nanometers. Most industry insiders see this push as Intel’s attempt to fend off a major challenge from U.K. chip designer Arm

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 With the earnings season getting into full gear, I am increasingly getting more optimistic about the staying power of the earnings growth momentum. My favorable takeaway does not reflect the stand-out results from tech bellwethers like Intel (INTC) and IBM (IBM) only. There is broad-based strength, from railroads to diversified industrials, which should reassure the market of the sustainability of the economic recovery. i will be looking for stocks to start reflecting this favorable trend. Intel and IBM may no longer be in the vanguard of the technology revolution, but they do provide an excellent early look into global technology spending patterns. Intel’s comments about low double-digit growth in global PC market is particularly important, as it runs counter to the consensus view of ‘flattish’ growth

There’s nothing new in Intel Corporation (INTC) reporting a solid quarter. But the question this time around is whether its performance will be enough to remedy some bearish sentiment in the PC market, and maybe even lift the chipmaker’s ho-hum Zacks #3 Rank (‘Hold’). For its first quarter, INTC announced earnings per share of 59 cents, which topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 46 cents by almost 30%. The company has surpassed quarterly expectations stretching back more than 2 years now (and even then it managed to match). The result was also about 37% better than last year’s result. Revenue increased by 25% year over year to $12.9 billion. That marks a very solid improvement over the Zacks Consensus Estimate at 11.6 billion. Intel stated that this revenue was an

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN or “TI”) has announced its intention to acquire National Semiconductor Corp (NSM) for $6.5 billion in cash. Counter-bids look unlikely, given the 78% premium TI is willing to pay that most prospective buyers would shy away from. The transaction is subject to the usual regulatory approvals (in this case across 10 countries). Therefore, it may not close for another six to nine months. We therefore do not expect much variation in estimates for the next few quarters, although estimates for 2012 are likely to go up. There is significant fragmentation in the market and competition is stiff, so regulatory approval is unlikely to be denied. TI intends to operate National as a separate unit under its analog segment, which would then comprise high performance analog (HPA),

Leading analog chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN, or “TI”) reported that two of its fabs in Japan have been impacted by the Tsunami. Share prices had held relatively stable during the day, but dropped off 2.05% after hours when the company announced the damage. The worst affected was TI’s facility in Miho, Japan, which is located roughly 40 miles to the north west of Tokyo. Although the structure of the Miho building remains in tact, TI estimates that the fab’s basic infrastructure systems for delivering chemicals, gases, water and air will need a repair time of around 3 weeks. Manufacturing equipment could also have been impacted, but the non-availability of a continuous power supply makes it hard to gauge the extent of damage. Of the two remaining fabs, Aizu-wakamatsu (150

As promised, Intel Corp’s (INTC) acquisition of McAfee Inc was completed in the first quarter, following approval by both the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the European Union. The FTC had given its approval earlier, but clearance from the EU was received after Intel assured that the new products created as a result of the acquisition would also function with software from other security companies, such as Symantec Corp (SYMC). McAfee will operate as Intel’s wholly owned subsidiary and its results will be reported under the Software and Services Group. It will continue selling its products and services under the McAfee brand (at least for now). The agreement, which was announced in August last year was completely unexpected, taking both analysts and investors by surprise. Our detailed analysis is available

Third Quarter Highlights Intel Corp’s third quarter earnings were slightly better than the company’s expectations, exceeding the Zacks Consensus by a couple of cents. Revenue was also more or less in line, helped by stronger demand from China and other emerging markets. However, management had lowered guidance significantly prior to the earnings announcement, so investor reaction was muted. National Semi’s revenues clearly disappointed, with a corresponding negative impact on the gross and operating margin lines. However, the tax rate was lower, helping the company deliver numbers slightly ahead of consensus expectations. While National Semi’s surprise history has not really been spectacular, the 5.9% positive surprise in the last quarter was one of the lowest it has been in recent times. Weak results coupled with weak orders resulted in a 4.81% decline in National Semi’s share prices in after-market trading yesterday. Revenue National Semi generated revenue of $390.4 million in the fiscal second quarter, a sequential decline of 5.2%, a year-over-year increase of 13.3% and

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) reported third quarter earnings that were up 12.1% sequentially and 69.4% year over year, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3 cents. The strong earnings growth was driven by healthy revenues, a better mix of business, cost control and good execution. Despite the positive surprise, Texas Instruments’ shares dropped 1.28% in after-hours trading on continued concerns regarding the slowing of demand, as evident from the first bookings decline in 7 quarters. Texas Instruments has been reporting very strong revenue growth over the past four quarters, indicative of share gains at the expense of its analog peers, particularly National Semiconductor Corp.
Following the handsome earnings posted by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in its fiscal third quarter, analysts appear to be more favorably disposed toward the company. Last Quarter Highlights The earnings surprise in the last quarter came on the back of gross margin improvement and good expense control, despite falling revenues. Particularly, AMD saw softness in the consumer market—similar to archrival Intel Corporation (INTC)—and it is likely that AMD also lost some graphics market share to NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA). On the positive side, enterprise did better than expected, with microprocessors for both desktop and notebook clients growing and new customers, such as International Business Machines (IBM), joining in. During the quarter, AMD used $124 million of cash in operations, spent $31 million on capex and repaid $818 million of debt. Debt

Following Intel Corporation’s (INTC) self-described “best quarter ever” in its fiscal second quarter earnings report back in July, the world’s largest chip-maker has again posted a positive surprise. This time INTC reported 52 cents per share on revenues totaling $11.1 billion in the quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate had been 50 cents per share on revenue on $11.01 billion. The headline number sports a year-over-year net income increase of 59%, although as we saw in Intel’s 2nd quarter, year-over-year comps have been fairly easy to exceed. After all, in the 3rd quarter of 2009, the recession had only just come to an end, but corporate and consumer spending would take a few quarters before picking up. Also, today’s earnings beat was followed by lowered guidance for the 3rd quarter from

Featured Post The Dollar Steals the Show Again The markets opened lower, driven by a slightly stronger Dollar and a drop in Asian markets. Wall Street is looking towards the FOMC Minutes which will be released at 2:00pm ET. The driving force behind the recent rally has been QE2 (quantitative easing two). The markets expect some major buying of treasuries, which will infuse massive money into the system, thus inflating and creating an artificial wealth effect. While scary, this seems to be the only possible avenue the Federal Reserve can take aside from doing nothing. The market has now priced in a significant amount of this. The Federal Reserve will have to deliver. In addition, earnings are on tap, starting with Intel Corporation (INTC) after the close of trading today.

Texas Instruments (TXN) tightened its third-quarter revenue and earnings outlook range but kept the mid-point of that range unchanged, as demand for personal computers and televisions show signs of weakness in a sluggish economy. Although the semiconductor company said the quarter was tracking consistently with its initial expectations, the narrowed outlook was reflective of broader economic issues that plague the semiconductor industry. Intel Corp. (INTC), the industry leader, had warned in late August that a slowdown in demand for consumer PCs in mature markets would eat into its third-quarter sales. The warning had sent a wave of concern through the PC industry as it came barely a month after July’s robust numbers from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel itself. Infineon, a German semiconductor company, is known for its processors used in smartphones made by Apple Inc. (AAPL), Nokia (NOK), Research In Motion (RIMM) and Samsung Electronics. The increased focus on the emerging mobile device market is perhaps Intel’s way of pre-empting a weakness in PC sales. In mature markets such as the U.K. and the U.S. PC demand is witnessing a shift to mobile computing devices. The Infineon wireless business, for its part, helps Intel get chips into mobile phones — an area where Intel has yet to make a mark. Samsung Electronics and Broadcom Inc.
Intel Corp. (INTC) announced yesterday that it would be acquiring McAfee Inc. (MFE), one of the largest makers of security software for $7.68 billion ($6.8 billion net of cash acquired) in an all-cash transaction. The purchase price of $48 a share represents a 60% premium to McAfee’s closing price on Wednesday (after which the deal was announced). Shares surged 57% yesterday, dropping off .06% after hours. This is overall a very good deal for existing McAfee shareholders, so they are expected to approve. Of course, regulatory approval will also be required, which may not be a problem, considering the fact that security software is not a market in which Intel competes. Intel also announced that it would be retaining key management personnel and running McAfee as a separate unit, similar

Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) reported second quarter earnings that were up 20.1% sequentially and 159.9% year over year, beating the Zacks Consensus estimate by 2 cents. The strong earnings growth was driven by healthy revenues (although just short of our estimate), a better mix of business, cost control and good execution. Despite the relatively strong performance, shares tumbled 5.28% after hours on concerns regarding the slowing of demand due to much weaker order growth. The company has been reporting very strong revenue growth over the past three quarters, indicative of share gains at the expense of its analog peers, particularly National Semiconductor Corp (NSM) and also, possibly Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI). Share gains should continue over the next few quarters as well, as operation of the RFAB starts lowering costs,

ON Semiconductor (ONNN) recently announced that it agreed to acquire Sanyo Electric Co.’s unprofitable semiconductor business in a cash-and-stock-deal valued at about $366 million. The company said the acquisition of Sanyo Semiconductor Co. will strengthen its presence in the automotive and consumer markets in the Asia Pacific region. The chipmaker, which competes with big names such as Texas Instruments (TXN) and Intersil Corp. (ISIL), said it sees the acquisition resulting in a charge but did not say how much. Although ON Semiconductor, a part of Motorola Inc. (MOT) until 1999, has a decade-old presence in the Japanese market, it expects the latest acquisition to be a strategic fit, giving it increased access to what it says is an important part of the global semiconductor market. Under the terms of the

Intel Corp. (INTC), the world’s largest chipmaker, easily outperformed earnings estimates in its 2nd quarter of 2010, reported after the bell but preceding the company’s conference call scheduled for 5:30pm ET. Intel posted earnings of 51 cents per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 43 cents in what the company is calling its “best quarter ever.” With revenues of $10.8 billion in the quarter and a gross margin of 67%, Intel (and its shareholders) have sufficient reason to crow about the results. Even though both analysts and traders of INTC stock had been very cautious leading up to the earnings announcement, its 2nd quarter numbers are impressive any way you look at them. Intel’s EPS is 18.6% higher than the 43 cents per share it reported in the first

Analog Devices (ADI) is a leading supplier of analog and DSP integrated circuits. The company’s April quarter earnings exceeded the Zacks Consensus estimate, driven by particularly strong demand for all major products sold into the industrial and automotive markets. We expect the strength to continue through 2010, as consumer and computing markets gain further momentum. Cash flow also remains impressive. Although we see competitive pressures and capex cuts in China impacting results near-term, we believe Analog Devices has turned the corner. ADI shares are trading at 12.7X our estimated earnings for fiscal 2010, compared to 17.5X for the peer group, a significant discount. Consequently, we are upgrading ADI shares from Neutral to Outperform. Zacks Investment Research

The earnings surprise was fueled by very broad-based revenue growth across end markets, geographies and most analog product lines, as well as a leaner cost structure. Revenues National generated revenues of $398.5 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, a sequential increase of 10.1%, a year-over-year increase of 41.9% and better than management’s guided range of $375-$390 million.
Over the past two years, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has proclaimed that “The Future is Fusion”, as it diverted customers from “The Smarter Choice” branding campaign launched several years earlier. But judging from the recently demonstrated AMD Fusion processor at Computex 2010, that future is not too far away. AMD expects to launch the Fusion processor next year and is currently looking for technology partners that could help the platform take off. AMD has also announced a fund called the AMD Fusion Fund, which would make investments in smaller companies looking to create programs based on the Fusion platform. Fusion basically combines the central processing unit (CPU), the graphics processing unit (GPU), video processing and other accelerator capabilities in a single-die design. So what does this actually mean to us,
