“Nobody ever got rich off of asset allocation.” That’s what Todd Schoenberger, Managing Principal at The BlackBay Group, told Yahoo! Finance readers recently. Instead, he advises, it’s much better to hold just two stock investments – specifically Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM). Exxon, after all, has $60 billion in cash at its disposal and Apple has $110 billion, more than enough to let both of them coast for some time. Similarly, they’re both stellar companies with impressive assets to offer investors… from Apple’s amazing stock price run-up over the years to Exxon’s steady dividend payouts. But what he forgets is that there is no “sure thing” investment in life. Sure, both companies have performed excessively well so far. But the past can only offer so

In focus today: Canada’s oil is bypassing the U.S., underestimated industries, a tech play other than Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), and the SITFA (in fact we have several quick SITFAs today) Almost all of Canada’s crude oil is exported to the U.S., for now anyway, but that’s going to change as soon as 2017. In 2011, just 1.65% of Canada’s crude was exported to countries other than the U.S., but Kinder Morgan has initiated a $5-billion pipeline project that’ll redirect Canadian oil to the West Coast for export to Asia. According to the Journal, this decision was accelerated by Obama’s decision to shelf the Keystone pipeline project that would have sent the crude south to the U.S. This new pipeline will increase the amount of oil piped to the West Coast

For the second time this week, one of the world’s biggest and most well known companies blew past quarterly expectations at a time when many were doubtful. On Tuesday it was Apple (AAPL), and today it was Amazon (AMZN), the world’s largest online retailer. AMZN announced earnings per share of 28 cents for the first quarter, compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate at 7 cents. That accounts for a surprise of 300%!. Some analysts were expecting a loss in the quarter. As anticipated, the result was far below the year-ago result of 44 cents. AMZN has proved that it isn’t afraid to take short-term hits in order for long-term gains. The company’s operating expenses have been moving higher as it expands into new markets. Specifically, the company has been increasing

Our analysts were right about Apple (AAPL) declaring its dividend and surging past $600/share. But how do they feel about the future of Apple? All I can say is… Our analysts are the real deal. Last year, Investment U Associate Investment Director Marc Lichtenfeld and Senior Analyst Steve McDonald made bold predictions about the world’s largest tech company Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). And already this year, both of their forecasts have come true… Prediction #1: Apple to $600 Steve McDonald’s prediction came first on December 19th. Here’s the condensed version of what he had to say: “A recent survey of buying trends of iProducts for Morgan Stanley by AlphaWise was full of upside surprises. “The street may be underestimating Apple’s 2012 ‘iProducts’ sales by as much as 40 percent. “If this

The present wireless market is ready for the incipient boom in the wireless data space with expanding broadband services. Data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds and has more than doubled over the last three years. As a result, U.S. carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising mobile data traffic. The situation becomes even worse with the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones. Stiff competitive pressure and limited wireless spectrum licenses add to the difficulties. The carriers are in need of additional airwaves to expand their high-speed services and support 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services. As a result, the wireless industry in 2012 is intent on tapping unused spectrum to expand their capacity. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), which

Apple Inc (AAPL) – When Apple hit the Zacks Rank 1 buy list, I couldn’t wait for the opportunity (pullback) to bring it to all you momentum readers. While you may think you know everything about Apple, there are some nuances about the product cycle and the expectations for the company that make it unique. It’s a company that everyone says is cheap, but it never seems to get too lofty in its valuation. In the past week alone the company was sued by Samsung, got a new price target of $710 by Barclays Capital and announced the release of their newer, faster and higher definition 4G iPad. By the way, you can reserve a new iPad today starting at $499, for delivery on March 16th. In the bullpen is

Apple’s share price exceeded $500 this week, giving it the largest market cap of any U.S. company. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) so successfully sells computers, phones and other electronic gadgets that recently announced fourth-quarter profits soared 118% on a 73% increase in revenue. This is unheard of for a $475-billion company. To put this in perspective, earnings at the companies in the S&P 500 stock index are on track to post a 6.6% year-on-year rise for the fourth quarter. Yet once Apple’s earnings are factored out, the expected fourth-quarter gain shrivels to just 2.8%. This so skews results that many Wall Street analysts are now stripping Apple from the index before weighing valuations and making forecasts. Of course, it’s just a matter of time before Apple’s torrid growth begins to wane.

Given the massive demand for wireless data services thanks to Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, AT&T Inc. (T) seems to be falling short of bandwidth. The company has formed a new policy of curtailing data speeds to better manage its data services on its network. For an unlimited plan user through AT&T’s smartphone’s downloading data would now mean a struggle as the company has axed approximately 99% of the data speed in an attempt to limit the “unlimited” services. The company’s new act is expected to upset around 17 million of its customers under the unlimited plan. Complaints have already started pouring in for speed slowdown after using only 1 to 2 gigabytes by customers. However, on the legal front, the company is playing fair as it has not debarred the unlimited

According to the data compiled by research firms Strategy Analytics and IHS iSuppli, Apple returned to its former glory in the smartphone market, buoyed by robust holiday sales of iPhone 4S. In terms of units sold, Apple sold 37 million iPhones during the October- December period, while Samsung shipped approximately 36.5 million smartphones. Nokia Corp (NOK) sold 19.6 million smartphones during the same period to grab the third position. Sony Ericsson ranked fourth, with 6 million units sold, while Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.
Steve Jobs would be very proud… Last week, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) reported its fiscal first-quarter results for 2012, and the results were nothing short of astounding: Quarterly revenue hit an all-time high of $46.3 billion. Earnings rose to never-before-seen levels. iPhone, iPad and Mac sales also all reached new highs. Even more, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook says this is only the beginning. He states, “Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.” One of these innovations, the company announced, will almost certainly be the introduction of near-field communication, or NFC, technology in new iPhones and iPads this year.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) recently received an adverse ruling in a patent suit against Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) from the International Trade Commission (ITC). An ITC judge set aside Apple’s allegation that Motorola Mobility had violated three of its patents. This is Apple’s second defeat against Motorola in successive months, after a German court issued an injunction favoring Motorola in December last year. Although the current ruling will be reviewed by a six-member ITC panel, the full commission doesn’t usually contradict with the judge’s determinations. ITC is expected to issue the final verdict in March this year. ITC has the power of blocking import of products that infringe U.S. patents. The lawsuit was filed by Apple in October 2010, targeting Motorola Mobility’s Droid, Cliq, BackFlip and other smartphones. Two of

Apple’s numbers have been amazing so far, but if the new numbers are correct, the stock price is going to explode. Apple is shaping up to be next year’s big story, again, and our aversion to what appears to be pricey stocks will have those who ignore this one watching the money train leave the station – again. Most stock buyers are in love with the $7 tech idea that can return 40 or 50 percent in a heartbeat. Stocks that sell for $380 per share just aren’t on most tech investors’ Christmas lists.
The telecommunications industry is growing consistently despite a volatile U.S. economy. This industry is identified as a major driver of economic recovery. Telecommunications is one of the few industries to have seen rapid technological improvement even during the last recession. Given the significance of the telecommunications industry as an infrastructure product, we expect the overall economic dynamics to shift in its favor. We also expect the telecommunications industry to grow faster in 2012 compared with 2011. Invention and Innovation The major thrust for the telecommunications sector is coming from nonstop network inventions by carriers. The introduction of super-fast networks such as HSPA+ and LTE has enabled handset developers and chipset manufacturers to develop innovative products that are compatible with the latest network technologies. Products like Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone, iPADS,

With the whole world increasingly going mobile, top phone makers such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM) are scrambling to bring smarter devices to the market. In fact, phone makers are touting screen size, resolution, virtual or real QWERTY keyboards, video conferencing, recording and streaming, social networking, office integration and what not to boost sales. While our parents may have considered a phone good if it offered noise-free, good-quality sound, we are more on the lookout for contacts management, social networking integration and media support, while our kids would rather be using the device to listen to music, capture and stream video and play games. Or that is what the phone companies would like us to do. And considering the level of competition in the

by Carl Delfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, December 8, 2011: Issue #1660 “My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.” - Charles Franklin Kettering There’s a lot of pessimism out there amongst investors as they worry about growth… But the fears about a no-growth economy are overdone and the financial media is only covering the problems. It was much the same in the mid-1970s when stagflation was all people could talk about – except for the busy founders of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Genentech, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). The big picture is that the next boom is already underway. Why am I so optimistic about a return to robust growth? Two reasons: An ever-rising, more-affluent global

Tech major Dell Inc. (DELL) is looking to grow its share of the server market, something that could hurt Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) in the longer term. Dell missed its chance of becoming the leading PC shipment vendor after H-P’s PC segment spin-off was called off by current CEO Meg Whitman. The two companies saw their fortunes reverse in the last quarter, as Dell’s server business did much better than H-P’s. H-P has seen a few hurdles in the last few quarters. Even the recently concluded fourth quarter was lackluster. And now, we see H-P encountering another threat from its nearest competitor Dell. Both companies have excelled in developing servers that bring the graphics processing unit (GPU) into the data center or high-performance computers (HPC). However, while H-P has mostly concentrated

For the first time in recent memory, Apple Inc. (AAPL) has missed EPS expectations for its fiscal 4th quarter of 2011. The greatest gadget-maker in the history of the world also came short on revenues for the quarter. Earnings of $7.05 per share on $28.3 billion in revenues missed the Zacks Consensus Estimates of $7.31 and $29.5 billion, respectively. Clearly, the culprit was iPhone sales — 17.07 iPhones were sold in the September quarter, whereas expectations were for roughly 20 million iPhones to ring up. iPad sales of 11.12 million units was generally in-line with estimates. Macs actually set an all-time record 4.89 million units sold and above the expected 4.5 million in sales, but this fact has been eclipsed by Apple’s disappointment on the headline numbers.
Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) earnings juggernaut hit a road block, after the iPhone maker missed the Zacks Consensus Estimates in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple earned $7.05 in the reported quarter, lagging the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.31. Apple shares declined approximately 7.0% in after hours trading. Earnings per share (EPS) shot up 52.0% from $4.64 reported in the year-ago quarter and were ahead of Apple’s conservative guidance of $5.50. The year-over-year growth was driven by higher revenue in the quarter. However, revenue fell shy of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $29.51 billion. Apple’s fourth-quarter miss was primarily due to lower iPhone sales, which reflects that consumers deferred their purchase based on the rumors surrounding the release of iPhone 5. This negatively impacted the sequential growth, which declined (16.0%) for

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is scheduled to release its fourth quarter 2011 results after the market closes on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. In the run up to the earnings results, we have noticed analysts raising their estimates over the past few days, and considering the past trends we continue to believe another earnings beat is on the cards. Prior Quarter Recap Apple’s third quarter earnings per share (EPS) comfortably exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5.81 per share by $1.98 (34.1%). Apple reported earnings of $7.79 per share in the third quarter, well ahead of its conservative guidance of $5.03. Earnings shot up 122.0% from the year-ago quarter. Mr. Market has pounded his hoofs long enough below the trading range highs and he’s ready to go higher. A move early next week above the August swing highs at 1,230 will generate momentum to push for the 200-day moving average up above 1,270. There is little resistance between here and there, just thin air and plenty of doubt — awesome fuel for a rally. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Though many Apple fans were expecting an iPhone 5, in October, iPhone 4S is likely to keep the company competitive in the smartphone market. iPhone 4S comes with a 3.5 inch high resolution screen (same as the earlier versions) and has its usual black and white casings.
Ever since Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone hit the market, Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) started losing its leadership position. For the last couple of years, the company failed to launch any device that could capture the market from iPhone or Android-based high-end smartphones. Research In Motion reported disappointing financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2012, which fell well short of Zacks Consensus Estimates. Nevertheless, its extreme low-level current valuation, which plummeted 69% in the last year, may provide a cushion for further downslide. We, therefore, reiterate our Neutral recommendation on the stock. Gross margin in the second quarter of fiscal 2012 was 38.7% compared with 44.5% in the year-ago quarter and 43.9% in the previous quarter. We believe this was primarily attributable to an unfavorable product mix toward

According to a recent report from news agency Reuters, Apple Inc. (AAPL) rejected an offer from Samsung Electronics Co that would have helped the U.S. company secure a quick court ruling over the patent infringement case it currently fights with the Korean company in Australia. Of course, the offer came with a rider. In return for its help in expediting the legal process, Apple was asked to immediately allow Samsung to launch its new Galaxy tab in Australia. Samsung had hoped to launch the new Galaxy tablet in Australia in late August or early September but this has been repeatedly delayed as it awaits the Australian court’s ruling. Samsung has also agreed to withdraw two features from the Galaxy 10.1, leaving just one disputed Apple patent over touch-screen display technology.

The patents cover 37 products, inclusive of the iPhone, iPod and MacBook Air. In China, Apple has been plagued by the sale of counterfeit iPhones and unauthorized stores that sell these products. Its has been estimated that more than 220 million fake or copycat units of iPhones alone were sold in China in 2010, and this figure is expected to jump to an astronomical 250 million units by year end, as reported by Chongqing Times.
Europe remains in the headlines, with rating downgrades for two major French banks due to their Greek exposure. But the overall tone of Europe-centric headlines has improved as the Germans have started to back-peddle from some of their tougher statements. It may be a tad calmer in Europe today, but rest assured that the issue is not going away anytime soon. We also have plenty of economic news on the domestic front this morning, with a soft Retail Sales report and a fairly benign inflation reading. On the inflation front, we got a relatively benign wholesale inflation reading for August this morning, with the ‘headline’ flat vs. expectation of a 0.1% drop. The ‘core’ PPI number came in better than expected at 0.1% vs. an expectation of 0.2%. The more

The legal tensions between Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co. keeps intensifying, the latest development being that the latter has filed a case against Apple in a district court in Paris, France. Samsung filed a compliant against the tech-giant, accusing Apple’s iPhones and iPads to have infringed on three technology patents relating to its UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). UMTS is a third-generation (3G) broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video and multimedia at data transmission rates of up to 2 megabits per second (Mbps). Samsung seems to have found a new way to counter Apple with this technology-focused lawsuit, since it has not won any of the design-related lawsuits that it filed against Apple. The development of this case will be an interesting event, as Samsung has

The company still has $2.16 billion available under the existing buyback plan. Following the news, Dell’s shares rose 2.29% in after-market trade. Dell stated that the company’s efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs have enabled it to generate very strong operating cash flows. Based on this performance, Dell expects to spend more on research and development, capital expenditures and acquisitions, at the same devoting more cash for stock repurchases. During the recently concluded second quarter, Dell spent $1.1 billion on share repurchases, taking the first half total to roughly $1.6 billion.
Recently, Samsung Electronics Co. filed a countersuit against Apple Inc. (AAPL) in Australia, alleging violation of seven Australian patents owned by Samsung related to wireless communications standards. Apple had earlier won an injunction against Samsung Electronics Co., under which the latter was forced to delay the launch of Galaxy Tab 10.1 until the end of September, in Australia. Samsung had originally scheduled the launch of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia in the middle of September. Samsung has also filed a claim to lift the ban on the Galaxy Tab as the company maintained that the Australian model of Galaxy 10.1 was different from its US models and it did not infringe upon any patents related to the Apple iPad. This is the second time that Samsung has sued

by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Thursday, September 1, 2011 It’s anyone’s guess how Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) will handle the departure of its prodigal son, Steve Jobs. The market has taken the news in stride as Apple’s stock is up roughly three and a half percent since the news was announced last Wednesday. But how will Apple replace a man that led it from likely bankruptcy in 1997 to the largest company in the world in 2011, if only for a brief moment? Nothing against Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, but we don’t really know much about him. Especially if he has the same knack for understanding his market like Jobs did. It’s a tough act to follow.
Uncertainty continues to loom over the PC market. The rise of next generation ultra-portable gadgets (mainly tablets) has taken the market by storm, diverting consumer spending dollars from traditional desktops and notebooks. The success of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPad has convinced the world that a thin rectangle portable touch screen with long battery life is enough to take care of most of our daily computing needs. While there was initial opinion that tablets were market expansive and there could be some truth to this, researches are now forecasting that iPad unit sales will grow at an average annual rate of more than 50% from this year to 2015. The fact that tablets are much cheaper is obviously playing a role as well. During the second quarter of 2011, PC shipments

Apple Inc.(AAPL) has won another injunction against Samsung Electronics Co., which will delay the launch of the latter’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 until the end of September, in Australia. Samsung had originally scheduled the launch of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia in the middle of September. Last month, Apple had sued Samsung in the Sydney Federal Court, accusing Samsung to have violated patent rights and alleged that the latter’s Galaxy 10.1 tab copied the iPad tablet in some respects. However, Samsung had argued that the Australian model of Galaxy 10.1 was different from its US models. Regardless, the court agreed on Apple’s request for the injunction and a hearing is scheduled on September 26 and September 29, 2011. Apart from Australia, the two companies have locked horns in patent
