After the bell Wednesday, Cisco Systems (CSCO) reported stellar earnings and revenue results that easily beat Zacks Consensus Estimates. The tech giant posted EPS of 43 cents per share (note: at Zacks we do not adjust results for employee stock options) on revenue of $11.5 billion, which bested estimates of 38 cents and $11.23 billion, respectively. Recall a year ago, when a weak tech environment sent Cisco Systems struggling to gain traction. The company regained focus — not simply on routers and switches but Enterprise, Commercial, Search and Cloud-based businesses, as well — and now sees 11% growth and gross margins of 62.4%.
Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR) recently announced that it will offer Junos Pulse Mobile Security Suite to Canadian telecom company, TELUS. Financial details of the deal were not divulged. Use of personal devices in the workplace and access to corporate networks is common these days. This prompted TELUS to secure not only its employees’ mobile phones but also its network resources. Launched in June 2010, the Junos Pulse software is specially designed to maintain the same standard of security across a network, even when some of the connected devices, such as cell phones, or other mobile Internet devices are outside the control of a network administrator. The Junos Pulse Mobile Security Suite, launched in October 2010, is part of the Junos Pulse platform and provides secure connectivity to all mobile devices.

Networking gear giant Cisco Systems (CSCO) reported fiscal 1st quarter 2011 earnings after the bell Wednesday, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimates slightly on both the top and bottom lines. Cisco brought in $10.75 billion in revenues in the quarter, below the $10.76 billion expected, and the company reported earnings of 34 cents per share (GAAP), short of the consensus by a penny. Investors and analysts alike had been cautiously optimistic ahead of the earnings announcement from the global leader in router and switcher production. Cisco shares had been up nearly 1% in the week to date prior to the announcement, and 2 of 14 analysts had upwardly revised quarterly estimates in the past month. Its fiscal third quarter (ended April) 2010 earnings per share (EPS) of 37 cents, on revenues of $2.2 billion, topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3 cents per share. (Zacks accounts for employee stock-based compensation, whereas other firms may not.) Revenue growth increased 63% year over year. These results are at record levels for both revenues and EPS, as pointed out by Cisco CEO John Chambers. “Our innovation and operational engines are exceeding our expectations,” he went on to say, and that the company’s Q3 “was probably the strongest quarter in our history.” Relative to expectations, these are typical Cisco Systems’ results. (JNPR) recently announced that it will be acquiring privately held media infrastructure company Ankeena Networks. The amount involved in this transaction is only $100 million, which is not substantial compared to the size of Juniper Networks. Technological collaboration is the basic motive for this acquisition, as Juniper is witnessing a surge in demand for rich media content that would be easier to develop through the integration of Ankeena’s technology into its solutions portfolio. We believe this is an ideal combination for both the companies, as apart from technological collaboration, Ankeena can also utilize the financial strength of Juniper.
Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) has announced a super-fast carrier routing system called the CRS 3. Management stated that use of multiple CRS-3s in the network would enable data transfer speeds of up to 322 terabits per second (tbps), significantly higher than the 92 tbps of the CRS-1, which is currently used by many of the major carriers around the world Incorporatedluding AT&T (T), Sprint (S) and Verizon (VZ). The company has sold around 5,000 CRS-1s to 300 network operators to date and this timely launch could help it gain market share. Management stated that the product was already in beta and would be available toward year-end. The new routers are also 12 times faster than existing products from competitors such as Juniper (JNPR).
