St. Jude Medical Inc. (STJ) recently disclosed its decision to build on its mutual agreement with Abbott Laboratories (ABT) by revealing the long-term Choice Alliance joint venture. This initiative provides St. Jude Medical the opportunity to incorporate Abbott’s drug-eluting stents with its cardiovascular, cardiac rhythm management and electrophysiology offerings. Both companies have agreed to endorse each other’s products to their respective customers. This alliance is expected to benefit patient outcomes, as doctors will be able to combine Abbott’s XIENCE family of stents with St. Jude’s optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) know-how to widen the scope of clinical treatments.
We upgrade our rating for Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (ISRG) to Outperform. First quarter earnings per share of $3.50 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Gynecology and prostatectomy procedures did well in 2011, as did certain emerging procedures. Recurring revenue continues to grow as a proportion of sales. In the interim, the installed base of Intuitive is expanding as more hospitals feel compelled to upgrade their technology. Overall, a proper valuation is appropriate given positive factors such as Intuitive’s leading position in robotic surgery, a growing list of emerging procedures, barriers to entry, sizeable cash balance and no debt. We like the company’s da Vinci system, particularly its unique status as an enabler of robotic, minimally invasive surgery. Our target price of $701 is based on a P/E of 48.2x our fiscal

I’ve been talking a lot lately about the $4 trillion that’s about to fall into the laps of businesses in the healthcare sector due to the number of Baby Boomers who are now turning 65. And we know that the older we get, the more we spend on healthcare. Consider: The average senior takes between two and seven prescription medications. Two out of three seniors will suffer a physical or mental impairment. One out of three seniors will spend time in a nursing home. All of those things cost money – not to mention, chemotherapy, insulin, rehab stays, regular doctor appointments, weight loss programs and nutritional supplements. That’s why it’s a great time to put money to work in the sector. Revenue and earnings are going to explode higher in

Revenues and earnings for the quarter beat the Zacks Consensus Estimates, driven by strong sales from the company’s LifeVest and temperature management businesses. The company witnessed healthy sales across the North American hospital and pre-hospital markets. We are pleased with ZOLL’s solid fundamentals and its broad product range. Moreover, its significant international presence should also drive growth. The company has completed multiple acquisitions and is seeking more such lucrative transactions to aid growth.
Picking the right stock is never easy, especially in a difficult and volatile market. There are thousands of stocks to choose from and many investors eventually end up boiling the ocean. The U.S. economy continues to be cramped by a spate of headwinds including a still unstable job market, high debt, a soft housing sector and last but surely not the least, the European sovereign debt contagion, which have hit industries across the board. The recent EU summit did not bring out any concrete solution to staunch the debt crisis which began in Greece in 2009. The healthcare sector, traditionally revered as a safe haven for investors and one of the most preferred areas to take cover in the midst of market volatility, has been somewhat proved not immune to

Wilson Greatbatch, the self-professed “humble tinkerer” and a trailblazer in medical technology, invented the first implantable cardiac pacemaker in 1958 which kept the rhythm of millions of heartbeats and preserved countless lives across the planet. A couple of decades later, the first patient received an implantable defibrillator, the brainchild of Dr. Michel Mirowski, in 1980. But that took place decades ago and we have come a long way since then. Medical technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, revolutionizing the way medicine is practiced, in a hi-tech world. And what is more quintessential in this Faustian quest for good, and even better health, than taking care of the heart? There is a Chinese proverb that goes: “If you keep a green bough in your heart, the singing bird will come.”

Resuscitation devices maker ZOLL Medical (ZOLL) said that its new AutoPulse Plus cardiac support pumps has been bought by WSPR Szczecin, the biggest emergency service operator in Poland. The Polish entity has purchased 49 such devices to equip its fleet of ambulances. The innovative AutoPulse Plus pumps enables rescuers to defibrillate without stopping chest compressions for defibrillation. WSPR Szczecin selected the device based on positive user experience following a 12-month evaluation. The Massachusetts-based company also noted that WSPR Szczecin has initiated a program to upgrade to its new E Series Monitor/Defibrillator from the existing M Series platform. The E Series connects directly to AutoPulse Plus, which enables real-time integrated operation of these devices, thereby allowing consistent, uninterrupted chest compressions with timed shock delivery.
Hologic (HOLX), a leading player in the field of women’s health, has released its C-View synthesized 2D image reconstruction algorithm. This eliminates the requirement of a conventional 2D mammogram as a part of a 3D mammography (tomosynthesis breast cancer screening). The C-View software creates a 2D image from a single tomosynthesis, thus doing away with the need for additional 2D exposures. Hologic will feature the new algorithm along with its Selenia Dimensions breast tomosynthesis system at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), currently underway in Chicago. Earlier this year, Hologic received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Selenia Dimensions 3D digital mammography tomosynthesis system. The prevailing macroeconomic factors, pricing headwinds, austerity measures, reimbursement pressure and the impact of health care reform continues to weigh on the medical devices industry, exacerbated by Europe’s sovereign debt plight. The beleaguered U.S. implantable defibrillator market continues to bother cardiac devices makers, as reflected by sustained implant volume pressure. On the other hand, companies in the orthopedic domain remain affected by a still choppy reconstructive implant market as they faced sustained pressure across hip, knee and spine businesses in the third quarter (albeit to a lesser extent vis-à-vis the sequentially prior quarter).
June quarter results mostly mirror the preceding quarter as a host of macro headwinds (including price and procedure volume pressures) continued to haunt the MedTech industry and weighed on the performance of the incumbent players. Although a number of these issues are expected to linger over the second-half of 2011, the industry is expected to fare relatively better this year thanks to several tailwinds and growth opportunities. Industry Dynamics The global medical devices industry is fairly large, intensely competitive and highly innovative, with estimated worldwide sales of more than $300 billion in 2011. The U.S. is the largest market, with estimated sales of roughly $95 billion in 2010. The highly-regulated medical devices industry is divided into different segments including Cardiology, Oncology, Neuro, Orthopedic and Aesthetic Devices. The U.S. medical devices

Recently, the leading neuromodulation company Cyberonics (CYBX) stopped shipment of two models of its Aspire platform generators. The company is currently retrieving the already sold but unused models namely No. 105 and 106. The company has also suspended enrollment in its E-36 clinical trial pending resolution of this hardware related design issue. As a result of this massive set back, the company’s shares plunged more than 11% from the closing price of 12th August. The company’s decision is based on the realization that stimulation output current delivered to patients can be less than the output current programmed by a physician. The Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy System was approved for the treatment of medically refractory epilepsy in Europe in 1994 and in the US and Canada in 1997. Cyberonics is

We reiterate our Neutral recommendation for Greatbatch Inc. (GB). Second-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings per share of 43 cents met the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Revenues rose 4% year over year to $146.5 million, topping the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $141 million. Sales were boosted by solid double-digit growth at the company’s Orthopedic franchise backed by favorable foreign exchange translation, which offset declines across other businesses. Greatbatch lifted its revenue and earnings forecast for the full year. Orthopedic revenues surged 24% in the quarter, fueled by customer product launches, market share gains as well as favorable foreign currency impact. Vascular Access sales fell 2% while CRM/Neuromodulation revenues edged down 1%, hurt by sustained pricing pressure and sluggishness in the CRM market. Revenues from Greatbatch’s Electrochem segment dipped 2% in the quarter. Greatbatch

Private equity firm Apax Partners and two Canadian pension funds are set to acquire leading medical technology company Kinetic Concepts (KCI). The deal, including Kinetic’s outstanding debt, is valued at approximately $6.3 billion. As an independent global partnership, Apax exclusively focuses on long-term investment in growth companies. The acquisition of Kinetic is part of Apax’s intention to support deals in the financial & business services, healthcare, media, retail & consumer and technology sectors. However, probably its budget doesn’t permit such a big acquisition at this point, so Apax teamed up with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) to get the deal done. As per the terms of the agreement, Kinetic’s shareholders will receive $68.50 in cash for each share of

We recently reiterated our Neutral recommendation on Cyberonics (CYBX) with a target price of $30.00, following our assessment of its fourth quarter 2011 results. Cyberonics reported fourth quarter 2011 EPS of 26 cents, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 29 cents and were well below the year-ago quarter adjusted EPS of 40 cents. The year-over-year decline was attributable to significant increase in income tax expense ($5.5 million in the reported quarter compared with the year-ago quarter level of $.03 million). Cyberonics develops and markets Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy System, which is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of refractory epilepsy and treatment-resistant depression (TRD). During the quarter, Cyberonics witnessed a continuous expansion in its top line, attributable to the company’s pioneer product,

Leading integrated radiotherapy systems maker Varian Medical (VAR) has achieved another key milestone as its popular TrueBeam therapy system has been successfully deployed at Shantou University Medical College’s affiliated cancer hospital, thereby becoming the first cancer treatment center in China to install this advanced system. Shantou University Medical College is a premier medical college and health research base in southern-eastern China. The TrueBeam system was donated to the hospital by private charitable organization Li Ka Shing (“LKS”) Foundation. It was dedicated in a special ceremony held at the affiliated hospital on June 28. TrueBeam was approved in China in early 2011. Varian recently secured the Japanese regulator’s clearance for the system. Introduced in April 2010, the TrueBeam platform is used in image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery to treat multiple cancer types.

Leading medical devices player Medtronic (MDT) has been put under the scanner based on some articles published on recombinant human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in a recent edition of Spine Journal. According to a report issued in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the Spine Journal finding, surgeons missed to mention the complications encountered with bone-growth protein in clinical trials. The WSJ reported that the Spine Journal found many serious complications such as sterility, infection, bone dissolution and worsened back and leg pain as well as cancer in 10-50% of patients who were treated with Infuse or a sister product in 13 clinical trials. These trials were funded by Medtronic and conducted by the surgeons during 2000 and 2010. Infuse Bone Graft constitutes rhBMP-2, which is applied to an absorbable
