We are maintaining our Neutral recommendation on diversified specialty materials producer Allegheny Technologies (ATI). Its fourth-quarter 2011 earnings per share of 31 cents missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 54 cents. However, profit (as reported) more than doubled year over year to $31.7 million. Revenues increased at a healthy double-digit clip to $1.25 billion, driven by increased shipments for most high-value products, higher raw material surcharges and increase in the average base selling prices for many products. However, sales missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.31 billion. Moving ahead, Allegheny expects revenue growth to be at least 10% year over year in 2012. The company expects to continue to benefit from its new alloys and products, diversified global growth markets and differentiated product mix.
Bowing to the pressures of the sluggish market demand for coal, Patriot Coal Corporation (PCX) decided to lower the production of thermal coal. As a result, the company’s Freedom underground mine will remain idle. The mine, located in the Bluegrass complex in Illinois Basin, had produced 1.2 million tons of thermal coal in 2011. Subsequent to the production cut, there will be no uncommitted Illinois Basin thermal coal delivery for Patriot Coal in 2012. Idling of Freedom underground mine follows the idling of three other Central Appalachian thermal coal mines, which collectively produced 1.2 million tons of thermal coal in 2011, in the first quarter of 2012.
Coal has been used for nearly as long as mankind has thrived. From the times of the cavemen to present day, coal is used for everything from cooking to heating to running steam-powered trains to generating electricity. Today, coal is burned as fuel or gasified to create a synthesis gas (syngas) that can then be used as a feedstock for the production of chemicals, fertilizer and electric power. Coal is also used for producing heat through combustion. The USA, Russia, Australia, China, India and South Africa have the largest coal reserves in the world. Coal is produced in 25 states in the US, spread across three coal-producing regions. The majority of the current production originates in just five states: Wyoming, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Montana. The importance of coal

We downgrade our recommendation on BHP Billiton Ltd. – ADR (BHP) from Neutral to Underperform based on declining industrial demand on the back of sluggish economic growth in Europe and U.S. Other headwinds include competition from peers, upsurge in oil prices and rising inflation in the emerging markets. Turning toward expenses, the cost of improving ore grades, mining disruptions due to natural calamities, governmental delays as well as currency fluctuations further thwart the stock. A slower global growth rate, on the back of the European crisis and a dwindling U.S. economy may impact the demand for the company’s products and dampen revenue growth going forward. Volatility in currency prices may have a significant impact on the company s financial results going ahead. Moreover, an upsurge in oil prices and rising

(BHP), Rio Tinto plc (RIO), Xstrata and other iron-ore and coal miners operating in Australia. These companies have to bear an estimated burden of about A$11 billion ($10.8 billion) as extra charges in the first three years. When the worldwide arguments and disputes on the issue of Australian tax imposition was just taking shape, the Brazilian court–the 2nd Federal Regional Tribunal, upheld a ruling on Vale S.A (VALE), requiring the miner to pay 25 billion reais ($14 billion) in back taxes on overseas profits. This was offset in part by improved metallurgical coal shipments and robust met coal pricing. Going forward, increased regulation and alternate energy sources, specifically natural gas, continue to be major risks for coal miners like Arch Coal. Though we believe the company is well-capitalized, low-cost operations provide a competitive edge over smaller players in the industry, we move to an Underperform recommendation on Arch Coal due to the recent difficulties faced at the company’s PRB operations as well as the longwall outage at Mountain Laurel (Appalachia).
by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, November 15, 2011: Issue #1643 Most natural gas drillers have been scrambling to reposition their drill rigs over oil-rich acreage… And why not? With oil once again hovering near the $100-a-barrel mark, you can hardly blame them. But Monday’s news from BHP Billiton Limited (NYSE: BHP) contradicts that notion. Billiton announced that it plans to spend somewhere around $4.5 billion on shale gas development. That’s not a typo. Perhaps even more amazing is that’s just what it’s going to spend next year. That’s an enormous amount of money compared to what some other natural gas companies are spending. Many of them have repositioned their rigs and their business plans around drilling for shale oil. But the real message Billiton is telegraphing is

Despite the impacts of inclement weather and staggering fuel prices, U.S. Railroads saw strong momentum in the first half of 2011 primarily driven by higher coal volumes. Coal shipments, which accounted for approximately 40% of the total railway shipment, led to positive market sentiments. However, a suggested decline in coal shipments for the second half of the year by Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Walter Energy (WLT) is having a ripple effect on the rail industry. The negative market reaction resulted in steep declines in share prices. Major players like CSX Corporation (CSX) and Norfolk Southern (NSC) plunged 8.1% and 8.3%, respectively, followed by Union Pacific (UNP) and Kansas City (KSU) which sank a respective 6% and 4.5%. Thus, companies such as BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) and Lynas Corp. (OTC: LYSCF.PK) stand to spend plenty on increasing mining production. Australia is a huge benefactor to this recent trend. Its rich natural resources and close proximity to China and other emerging economies helped it avoid the worst of the financial crisis. Mount Weld was even billed as the savior to China’s rare earths monopoly.
The rebound phase for the coal industry from the 2008-2009 turmoil continued in 2011. The global economic outlook started improving following the turmoil of late 2008. The U.S. economy came out of the recession in the summer of 2009 and has been in a recovery mode since then, though the pace of improvement appears to have weakened lately. Like the other commodity sectors, the fortunes of the coal industry are closely tied to the health of the global economy. The post-recession demand recovery helped improve the group’s earnings power, with most coal companies solidly profitable in 2010. This uptrend in demand, largely driven by the improvement in the global economic activity, rebound in domestic power demand, favorable weather patterns and soaring coal demand from Asian countries, also continued into 2011.

Massey Energy Co. (MEE) gave a new direction to the ongoing investigation to go into the cause of the April explosion at its Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia, which killed 29 miners. Massey’s management said that, as per new evidence gathered by company experts, the deadly explosion was caused by the sudden rush of natural gas probably from cracks in the mine’s floor, rather than a build-up of methane gas from unsafe coal mining and ventilation procedures. According to Massey, an analysis of gas emissions near the area where the explosion probably occurred shows that the chemical make-up was closer to natural gas from non-coal sources than the gas that comes from coal seams. The company is now seeking permission from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Tuesday, November 30, 2010 What’s dirty and out of fashion, but everybody wants it? That would be coal, both the coking kind used to make steel, and the thermal coal used to fire power plants. Over the past year or so, coal consumption has climbed on emerging market demand. To the industry’s surprise, it’s been enough to push global prices to a two-year high. The Wall Street Journal reports that China even worries it may run out of coal someday. So the government may cap domestic output to keep from running down the country’s reserves too quickly. Intent on meeting that demand, companies everywhere are busy merging and acquiring. In fact, just in the last few weeks, $15 billion in deals have been announced.

Mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) decided to withdraw its buy-out offer for Canada’s Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT), the world’s biggest fertilizer manufacturer, after non-clearance by the Investment Canada Act. Capital which was raised to fund the bid will now be used for buyback of shares worth $13.0 billion, which is going to add to shareholder value. However, BHP Billiton will suffer heavy losses of $350 million, of which $250 million has been decided to be shown as an exceptional item in the December 2010 interim accounts. BHP Billiton sustained a production loss based on the dissolution of the joint venture with Rio Tinto (RTP). The joint venture would have substantially increased BHP Billiton’s iron ore production in future. The joint venture for producing iron ore in Australia

The much awaited joint venture between BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RTP) to produce iron ore in Australia was mutually dissolved with no break fee. The joint venture, which was proposed in June, last year, came to an end after it was disapproved by some of the Australian regulators. BHP Billiton is at present concentrating on its buy-out offer for Canada’s Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT), the world’s biggest fertilizer manufacturer, for $130 per share. The $130 per share offer was once rejected by Potash’s shareholders as being grossly inadequate. They believe that a 16% premium over the August 16 closing price of $112.15 grossly undervalues Potash in terms of its global operating capacity and growing market demand. Thus, BHP Billiton will review its options and make

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, October 7, 2010 If you’ve already heard of BHP Billiton ADR (NYSE: BHP)’s attempt to take over Canadian fertilizer giant Potash (NYSE: POT), then put it out of your mind for a minute. If you haven’t, then you might want to check it out sometime today. It’s well worth the read… as is a less well-known, multi-billion dollar deal in the same sector. Global miner Rio Tinto ADR (NYSE: RTP) has set out to control another Canadian company, Ivanhoe Mines (NYSE: IVN). And just as with the BHP-Potash feud, this battle looks heated… and with good reason… Ivanhoe Mines Copper and Gold Find Relations between Rio Tinto and Ivanhoe Mines started out well enough.
The recent announcement of Penn Virginia L.P.’s (PVE) merger with its general partner is expected to reap profits in the long term, benefiting from the partnership s lower cost of capital. This would place the company in a better position to compete for acquisitions Incorporatedreasing returns on future transactions. However, this transaction would, in our opinion, be dilutive to the partnership s distributions in the near term, affecting investor sentiments. Based on expectations for lower distributions, we have moved our recommendation on the stock to Underperform. Furthermore, we expect the partnership s future results to be affected by the instability in the capital markets and fluctuation in commodity prices.
